I don't get it. I watched his testimony live. It was very moving. But nothing he said should have resulted in retaliation.

He was a witness who (atypically) agreed to speak to the State and to testify against a cop in a murder trial, during which police misconduct was exposed and at the end of which a white cop was convicted of murdering a black man.

Whether or not Brown's murder had anything to do with his cooperation/testimony, it is very easy to see why not a few folks believe it did.

S. Lee Merritt tweeted:

" I was told by immediate family that the ME said mouth and chest. Initially I was told in the back. I just heard from a witness who provided aid to a wound in the side and back. We will have to wait for an autopsy to be sure."
(Graphic, sorry) Perhaps there was blood coming out of his mouth due to internal bleeding, so it appeared to have been a shot to the mouth.

If it really was a shot to the mouth, there’s no question it was related to the case. That’s a “you should have kept quiet” message if ever there was one.

Agree
Shudder...

This sure seems awfully coincidental to me. What are the odds of this happening to this young man right after he testifies at this trial?

Did someone see the trial and have it out for him? If so, why? Did someone want to make it look like someone else did it? I sure hope that justice is swift.

How very sad for his family. He seemed like a very nice young man. :'(

It makes perfect sense that someone could see blood coming from his mouth and conclude he had been shot in the mouth. But the story he was shot in the mouth was attributed to Brown's family being told that by the ME.

Very telling that he didn’t have any identification on him. I’m not very street smart, but know enough that missing identification happens in a hit.

And to be shot in the mouth! If DPD is behind it, they are bold! I wonder if his chest wound was also on his left side like Bo’s was.

Joshua was such a fine and nice young man who did the right thing. May he Rest In Peace and justice be served.

A Dallas police spokesman on Saturday would not confirm to The Associated Press that it was Brown who was shot Friday. He said the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office would determine the identification Sunday.

Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots and saw a silver four-door sedan speeding out of the parking lot, according to the police news release.

Lee Merritt, a lawyer for the Jean family, said in a tweet Saturday that he spoke with Brown's mother.

"She is devastated. We all are," Merritt said. "Joshua Brown was a key witness in the murder of Botham Jean that helped put Amber Guyger away. We need answers."

What are the legal implications of this young man being shot dead when the inevitable appeal of AG’s conviction/sentencing happens?

I don’t believe in coincidence, as a general rule. I also struggle to believe this young man’s death will actually be investigated properly by DPD.

The Dallas Police Department (DPD) has yet to release information about the victim or the suspect. But attorneys with knowledge of the case and Brown’s family confirmed Brown’s identity via social media on Saturday afternoon.

Dominique Alexander, a Dallas area civil rights activist who is close to Brown’s family, posted about his death on Facebook:

I [have] been notified that Joshua Brown who testified on the stand in the Amber Guyger trial was shot & killed last night, not sure what happen but I will keep you updated on new developments.

Lee Merritt, the attorney for Botham Jean’s family, later confirmed the news on Twitter and in a separate Facebook post.

“Joshua Brown, the next door neighbor of #BothamJean was killed last night after being shot several times by an unknown assailant,” Merritt noted. “Local media has reported on the shooting but have not confirmed Brown’s identity. Because, Brown worked closely with prosecutors just a week ago to ensure Amber Guyger was properly convicted in the murder trial, the DA’s office has fairly direct contact with Brown and his family. An ADA has confirmed that it was in fact Brown who was killed although they have yet to identify a suspect or motive for the shooting. The case is now in the hands of the Dallas Police Department. Brown’s testimony stood out as a fact witness who was approaching his apartment directly across from Botham Jean’s apartment when shots rang out.”

Online reaction thus far has been fierce–with many people terming Brown’s death an “assassination,” “hit,” and/or revenge on behalf of Dallas cops. While the timing of Brown’s death is suspicious, there is at this time no evidence to support such online characterizations of the killing.

Yes.
Shivers...

Let's say, on appeal, AG gets a new trial...because being on trial with a Dallas jury was too prejudicial. Brown's testimony would be shown? Or thrown out?

Although, in all fairness, the unfortunate likelihood that this is related to Amber Guyger's trial or subsequent conviction for murder of Botham Jean is slim to none. Unless there is substantial evidence that links this to his testimony. Of course, the Dallas police department is investigating...I wonder what evidence crucial to a murder investigation will get overlooked or deleted this time...

I do not suspect DPD being involved. I can see them being set up to look like they are involved, but I really don't think that this young man said anything that was damaging to DPD or AG, not that I could tell. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
