Dogs detect human decomposition in car of man arrested in case of missing girl Maleah Davis, 4
[...]

Police said surveillance video showed Vence getting dropped off at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in the silver Altima last Sunday. Police found the car in a parking lot Thursday.

At Vence’s probable cause court hearing Saturday night, Harris County prosecutor Pat Stayton said two dogs trained to find cadavers reacted to the trunk of the car.

“The dogs were responding to the scent of human decomposition in the vehicle,” Stayton said.

Surveillance video from a neighbor had shown Vence carrying a large, blue laundry basket with a large trash bag from his apartment on May 3, Stayton said. Vence returned three minutes later without the basket and later he was seen leaving the apartment with cleaning supplies, including bleach.

In the car, police found a laundry basket that looked like the one Vence took out of his apartment, Stayton said.

Watch live: Local activist Quanell X speaks on disappearance of Maleah Davis

[...]

Reporter: Anything else that I missed that you think the public should know about this?

QX: Many people did not know that he had dismembered this beautiful baby.

Reporter: You said that in the interview. What makes you say that? What information are you hearing that leads you to say that?

QX: Well, there was blood splatter evidence in the apartment. There was luminol spray and chemical spray that was all over the apartment after homicide investigators left. When you look at the video footage extensively you can tell what was going on. And you could tell that he made two trips to buy big bottles of bleach. This was a man who never cleaned the house up, ever, but he's buying big bottles of bleach, getting a big garbage bag, and there was blood splatter etc. around the drainage area of the house. Why would human body tissue be in the drain system? Why would human body tissue be in the pipes under the sink. in the pipes under the bathtub? Why would there be human body tissue found around the creases and cracks of the bathtub?

Mother of Maleah Davis blames girl’s stepfather for disappearance
[...]

“There’s a lot that hasn’t come out, that’s for sure,” he said Friday. “It’s just a sad story.”

[...]

In the video, Vence was seen the morning after Bowens went to Massachusetts for her father’s funeral carrying two bottles of bleach, a large laundry container and a black bag stuffed inside, Quanell X said.

Bowens believes that Maleah’s disappearance was triggered by a confrontation she had with Vence the day before her trip, Quanell X said. She asked Vence about nude photos he allegedly sent to another person, and he “snapped.”

He took it out on Maleah, possibly because of indications that he physically and sexually abused the girl, who has special needs, Quanell X said. She described severe bruising on the little girl’s leg on at least one occasion, as well as suspicions she had been molested.

“It was out of fear and out of being threatened by Mr. Darion that she covered up physical abuse of Maleah that the stepfather was doing,” the activist said. “For some reason, she was unwilling to tell everything she knew about him. And I think the mother has a twisted love for the man.”

Cadaver Dogs Responded in Maleah Davis Case: Prosecutor | Law & Crime
Authorities revealed in court why they think there’s a dead body involved in the case of missing 5-year-old Maleah Davis. Two cadaver dogs noted the trunk of a newly recovered Nissan Altima.

“The dogs were responding to the scent of human decomposition in the vehicle,” Harris County prosecutor Pat Stayton said at a probable cause hearing Saturday night for defendant Derion Vence, according to USA Today.

[...]

Cops said they found the car Thursday in Missouri City, Texas. According to prosecutors, that’s where the cadaver dogs responded to the vehicle. Authorities also claimed to have found a laundry basket and gas can in the trunk.

Officers said that Vence was seen bringing this “full” basket from Vence’s apartment.

Police claimed they found blood in the hallway and bathroom of the residence, according to court documents reported by News West 9. This matched DNA found on Davis’ toothbrush, investigators said.

Lawyer Rodney Brown was appointed to represent Vence at Saturday’s hearing, but the defendant said he was going to hire a private lawyer, according to The Associated Press. Bond was set at $1 million. A court hearing is scheduled for Monday.

New details in Maleah Davis investigation emerge as court documents made public
[...]

Probable cause documents reveal that on May 5, the same day an Amber Alert was issued for 4-year-old Maleah, detectives with the Houston Police Homicide Division searched Brittany Bowens' apartment with her permission. Bowens is Maleah's mother.

Police said in the documents that blood drops were found in the hallway and led to the bathroom. Inside the bathroom, more blood was found on various surfaces, documents show.

Investigators sprayed a chemical that reacts to the presence of blood that may not be seen by the naked eye, records show. The chemical showed the presence of blood and that it reacts "when a person has attempted to clean up blood," according to the probable cause document.

Samples of the DNA found were positively matched with DNA on Maleah's toothbrush, documents show. Additionally, the DNA matched "a person who is the maternal offspring of Brittany Bowens."

Blood linked to missing 4-year-old Maleah Davis found in stepfather’s apartment, police say
Investigators also said that Vence, who went missing after reporting Maleah’s disappearance, can be seen on surveillance footage leaving his apartment with a laundry basket that had “a large black trash bag inside.”

Investigators “observed from the video that the basket appears heavy due to the stance (Vence) uses when walking,” court records show.

Vence returned to his apartment roughly three minutes later without the basket, investigators said. He then walked out of the apartment with cleaning supplies, including bleach, investigators said.

JS said she lives right across from where Maleah, her mother and Vence lived.

Sotos’ surveillance camera caught Vence briefly walking over to his car alone on the day Maleah’s mother had flown out of state. JS said she remembers clearly not noticing the bruise on Vence's head the same night Maleah was reported missing.

“I looked at him and he went back into his apartment. And I looked at him, but he didn't have a big bruise or anything at all,” said JS.

'We know she's still missing' | Stepfather in Maleah Davis case due back in court
[...]

"I can guarantee you there will be a murder indictment on this man," said community activist Quanell X. "Evidence from inside the apartment being analyzed right now will help us all learn the truth of what he did with her body."

Quanell X said Maleah's mother Brittany Bowens is devastated. Houston police revealed that last Sunday they found drops of blood in the hallway leading to the bathroom.

They also sprayed a chemical in the bathroom that helped detect more blood not visible to the naked eye.

Investigators said the reaction happens when someone's "attempted to clean up blood." That blood has been linked to DNA on Maleah's toothbrush.

"He did this to hurt the mother in a way she would never recover," said Quanell X.

Bowens stood back as Quanell X spoke, shaking as tears rolled down her cheeks.

Maleah Davis investigation: Police found blood in the home of her mother's fiance - CNN
[...]

There's footage of him being dropped off at the hospital he said he walked to. Blood from his car matches DNA from Davis' toothbrush. He was seen walking out of his apartment with a big plastic bag -- and Maleah was never seen leaving the home since.

A week since his initial account, there is a "substantial likelihood" Vence will be charged with murder, court documents state.

[...]

Vence allegedly told investigators "that there should be no blood in the home and that no one was recently bleeding."

[...]

In the footage, Vence is seen on May 3 leaving the apartment with a large blue laundry basket with a black trash bag inside.
Vence returned a few minutes later, the documents say. He then walks back out of the apartment carrying cleaning supplies, including bleach.
According to the affidavit, the camera never again captured Maleah leaving the apartment.
