Agree. By all accounts, Dallas PD has done an exemplary job in community policing, working with the people in the neighborhoods and fostering a sense of trust. Very tragic and wrong. He/they also harmed the good reputation of BLM members who have been running a peaceful organization. From listening to some of the interviews this morning, it doesn't sound as though this incident will change the work of Dallas PD and BLM to maintain good relations within the community. Other cities should follow their example. RIP to all.

I don't know if our PD is typical of most southern large police departments, but DPD is comprised of at least 45% people of color. Pretty diverse imo, but I can't say I know much about the demographics of other departments.

I want to know who the three people they have in custody who were heading south on 35 last night are......supposedly they are not cooperating (maybe have lawyered up). It was reported that one of them is female.... weird. JMO

Two people were in the vehicle according to the Dallas Morning News and KXAS.

Shortly before midnight, a Dallas police officer saw someone carrying a camouflaged bag, walking quickly down Lamar Street. The person threw the bag in the back of a black Mercedes-Benz that then sped off, police said.

Officers followed the vehicle south on Interstate 35E and performed a traffic stop at Interstate 35E and Kiest Boulevard, police said.

Police questioned both occupants of the vehicle and they were released, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported.

I've seen a local MSM report that said the occupants were a man and his brother who he had picked up at the bus station.

I saw local MSM tweets that the female arrested/detained was picked up downtown close to the El Centro parking garage.

Sorry I can't provide all of the links. I'm tired and overwhelmed, but will continue looking.

IMO, it's not really clear how many people were detained at some point last night. That should become clearer as the fog of war continues to clear.

My brother said, depending on the movement, the first shot was probably a carefully placed shot, resulting in a death, we know of the one killed at the pillar, and the other shots, especialy since coming from above(typically more damaging as the bullet angles through and often hits more) if on a group of officers it's very possible he was a lone shooter.

For some reason, the events at the pillar seem to be about 15 minutes after it first started. My belief is that multiple officers were down in moments, shot from above. I am pretty sure things did not escalate from the pillar.

No offense, but I don't blame them if they lawyered up immediately. Everyone should, but with the amount of distrust going on right now... I can't blame them. They could be perfectly innocent.

I finally got my quotes in Post #495 right with a link that gives a little more specific detail at least according to that news station.

BLM leader giving a statement. Will work with authorities on a proper investigation. Extend condolences to families of victims. They believe that black lives matter, but also that blue lives matter, too. We can work to heal America.

Good statement.

That is good. That statement is long overdue.

Watching Loretta Lynch talk. She is SO much better at this than Eric Holder was, IMO. Very respectful statement acknowledging loss and fear and pain going on in all of our communities right now.

I'm always a fan of getting a lawyer before talking to law enforcement. They have a whole department and legal system behind them and there's no good reason a person should go it alone.

Yes, I just saw that. Thank you for providing them. Helps me keep my mind tracking properly.

That's how non-functioning my brain is today. I had just read and posted the bus station info from WFAA.

Thirty minutes later I couldn't recall where.

smh :)

In captain's press conference he said earlier "we need your help to protect from men like these who did this crime"

To me, that suggests they may think the woman was NOT involved, or maybe involved but in some lesser way.
To me, that says LE still believes this is the act of more than one person.

I'm not an expert, but it seems they're an exception. In my area, Cleveland PD is still struggling with this problem. They have quite a few POC on their police force, but they don't do much in the way of community policing and tend to be very militant. They also have a problem with many officers on the force who don't live in Cleveland. They're recruiting some officers who are unfit for the job. They're learning. The incidents involving Tamir Rice and others is slowly resulting in change, but they're still very stubborn about it. IMO, there are quite a few officers who use steroids for bodybuilding, making them mentally unstable and prone to violence. There are still a lot of racists on the force.

I worry about the upcoming RNC Convention. There will be many out of town groups here to protest and so far, the local PD and FBI haven't been handling it very well. There's been a lot of intimidation of local leaders of peaceful protest groups. They were planning to put protestors in a large fenced in pen - a disaster in the making if someone starts shooting and police respond. Innocent protestors would have no means to escape. I think that has changed.

Yes The President has ordered the flags lowered

Random aside: I'm so thankful you guys are here. If it weren't for this discussion mixed in with news reports to search for I think I would be clutching a couch cushion and sobbing uncontrollably. Orlando and everything that's happened since is just too much.

POTUS has ordered the flags lowered to half staff.

My heart just hurts about all this.

Dallas police officer Patrick Zamarripa, 32, had survived three tours in Iraq, one of the world’s most dangerous places, his father, Rick Zamarripa, said Friday. And then this.

“He comes to the United States to protect people here,” his dad said. “And they take his life.”

Rick was watching television Thursday night when news broke that someone had opened fire on downtown Dallas around 9 p.m. after a peaceful protest in the city. He knew that his son had in recent months begun working as a bike officer in the downtown area, an assignment he enjoyed.

“Hey Patrick,” his father texted. “Are you okay?”

Rick had asked his son that question before, because he knew Zamarripa’s job was dangerous. The response usually came quickly: “Yes, dad. I’ll call you back.”

Not this time.

I feel like our nation is at a tipping point. Somehow through our shared grief over recent events, we have to figure out how to come together sand talk with each other.
