As a graduate of UNT and someone very familiar with that area, I can echo what a few other locals have already stated here. The streets being mentioned as where the search is occurring are literally the boundaries of the campus. Without knowing the family’s address, it sounds like they must either live adjacent to campus or not more than a block or two away.
The UNT campus itself is located at the intersection of Interstate 35 East and Interstate 35 West (I-35 splits into two separate highways down in Waco and then converges again in Denton). So to the southeast and west of the campus, you have nothing but interstate highway and businesses. North and northeast of the campus is a mixture of older businesses, old apartments, and some houses that maybe aren’t the newest or nicest. The campus itself and immediate surrounding streets is for the most part safe, outside of a few muggings and the occasional vehicle break-in. However, the city of Denton itself is VERY diverse, and that includes income, crimes, and neighborhoods. You can go from one block/one area which is a bit run-down and sketchy-seeming to another block that is trendier/renovated in like 2 minutes. It really is a complete mix of old/new, wealthy/poor, commercial/artsy and changes rapidly as you drive through it.
But the main point of all of this is that there isn’t any water or that many parks or nature areas close by where the boy could potentially be hiding (or worse). Even during the summer months, that area of Denton... especially the radius a 2 yr old could access by foot... is very busy with foot traffic of kids going to summer school or people in general visiting the local businesses. It would be VERY hard for a 2 yr old to wander around by himself for more than a minute or two without being noticed by someone (I would even say impossible).
It was pretty hot today in the DFW area, so that has to be the biggest concern at this point. If the child did in fact wander off from the home and is either hiding or lost and somehow unnoticed, the heat plays more and more of a factor by the minute.
I sure hope the little guy is just hiding in some trees or bushes nearby and is afraid to come out.
