Hagel speaking from Hawaii now. I need to hear from military officials. Not the Secretary of Defense in Hawaii. He's in Hawaii, the Prez is in Chicago, is anyone in D.C. anymore?

MOO

NO..I don't think so.

It IS shocking, isn't it? I simply do not now, or ever will, understand how anyone could do this. Some of those soldiers just got back from Afganistan. GB them all!

No specific information regarding whether or not these victims are soldiers. Conditions range from stable to "quite critical."

I would like to know what caliber of bullet the victims were shot with. What gun was used in the crime?

Authorities are investigating a shooting at Ft. Hood that left four people dead and 14 others injured, according to a Texas congressman. The sprawling military base was on lockdown as investigators tried to determine whether there was a second gunman.

Officials at Ft. Hood said they have received an initial report that a shooter at the base was dead. But Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said the shooter was among four who are dead. In an interview with CNN, he described the shooting as "soldier on soldier" and said terrorism was not suspected.

What does soldier on soldier even mean?
Nidal killed soldiers and he was a soldier... why wasn't that called soldier on soldier?
What am I missing here?

Politics. Look at who they were getting their info from. Which means most of it will be wrong. Trust the sources from the base.

OMG... Just hearing about this. Heartbreaking. Ft. Hood doesn't need this AGAIN!

:tears:

Soldier on soldier means that both victim and shooter were fellow soldiers....

The prior shooting was also soldier on soldier. I don't think that was ever disputed.

Both would definitely constitute workplace violence, because they were co-workers. I know many people are still angry about the lack of references to terrorism, but usually when someone shoots up a workplace, it's not considered terrorism. I think it can be both work place violence and terrorism in certain situations, but terrorism is so hard to define that it's not even really worth arguing over the label. You can argue almost every violent act is terrorism in that it has some larger point or implication, but it's rarely used to refer to incidents between people who know each other. It does have legal implications, and calling an American soldier a terrorist creates legal complexities that are probably not worth creating.

Well, I am now going to finally get my wrinkled towels out of the dryer. As someone who has family in the military, I just have to cry a bit over the horrible sadness and shame of it all.

DH just called me from the hockey game - Go, Wings! - and said that he knows about the shooting but not many details. I told him what I could.

Taking a break to watch SVU.
Later.
