I would say that these are the people that definitely are the ones who don't need to have guns. I totally disagree with that statement. I would say that persons feel very strongly that they have the right to defend themselves period. Has nothing to do with the 5th amendment and it isn't just in Texas. And when i say defend I am not just talking about defending against another person. Where I live there are snakes, wild boar, and all sorts of creatures that are harmful.

Fort Hood is a small city. Probably over 40,000 people and it is no different than any other small city. There is crime and most of it is never heard of. News picks up on this because it is news worthy. It is horrible, but what makes it more horrible than the 5 or 10 people murdered in Dallas or Chicago every night or day? Gun control is a subject that can be debated forever and I am not trying to start a debate on that subject so I will move on. jmo

I am a strong gun advocate and always will be.

But one thing I do wish they would implement along with FBI criminal background checks is being able to ascertain if the person wanting to purchase the gun has any documented mental illness in his or her background. Real mental illness that has been diagnosed and documented. That is the one thing I would like to see changed.

However this wouldn't have stopped Lopez. PTSD is a disorder and not considered a mental illness. Most all who suffers from it never ever goes out and shoots multiple people either or even one for that matter. So all cant be stigmatized by what a very few do.

And sometimes I think that PTSD becomes a catchall excuse for when someone does something like this. Its a easy blanket to cover up the fact that some killed because they were in a murderous rage. Not a mental illness but a behavioral problem.

I do think this story is different than most. All personnel on our military bases here should be safe and feel safe. To have it happen time and time again is very newsworthy. It shows nothing has been put in place to assure those on our bases (our heroes, families, contractors, and civilian workers) that they can come to work everyday and know they are safe. As of today, once again, they know they are not safe, and remain sitting ducks for the next shooter that will come along.

We owe it to the very people that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. They deserve much better than what they have had to experience. Now they have to bury more. It is a sad tragic dark time in America for all who value our true heroes.

Peace. Please don't take me wrong. I was born in Texas & have lived here all my life & a lot of that time was spent living in the country. In no way do I advocate gun control. I have been around guns literally since my first memories. It is simply a way of life.

However, I do get amused & a little irritated when some of my friends absolutely go into an acute panic when the words 'gun control' are even spoken. They rush out & buy more guns & ammunition to add to the hundreds of guns they already own. I could be wrong, but I think there is ZERO chance that there will ever be gun control in the USA. I believe I have a better chance of flapping my arms & flying to the moon.

I agree. All the gun control debate does is make more go out and purchase guns. More women than ever before in the history of our nation are buying guns and going to gun ranges.

As long as our President is surrounded by multiple tough men carrying AR-15s we will have guns in this country.:)

Do not have a link, but everyone needs to tune into CNN. I'm sure this will be re-broadcast numerous times.

A CNN reporter on site at Fort Hood was interviewing a soldier who was hidden from the camera. They said it was a woman but it was strange sounding so perhaps they had disguised her voice somewhat. She was very damning of Fort Hood, calling it a "Black Hole". She said everyone there was unhappy & that the soldiers were not treated well, etc. blah, blah.

Frankly, she sounded very near going off the deep end herself. At the very least she must be extremely unhappy if she was granting an interview to the press. She went so far as to say she could understand why the shooter did what he did.

JMO, but CNN needs to report her rather than interview her. It sounds like she is badly in need of help.

I can't believe Fort Hood would be worse than any other army base. If anything there should be more services available there than at some of the smaller bases.

Towards the end of her interview she states she was a military brat and has been on bases that she loved. Growing up on a base and being an enlisted member of the armed forces are not even close to being the same.

She's finished basic training and has been at Fort Hood for 2 months. She is disobeying an order given to all soldiers regarding giving information to the media. I saw on Twitter that someone could see her name tape. If that's true, she's going to be in for a bad time.

Well there is the trigger, his mom died 3 months ago. He was furious at the army for initially refusing him a pass to go to her funeral (i would have been furious as well but not murderous). Triggers aren't unusual in spree shootings or mass murder.

I'll wait to see if this is confirmed before I condemn the U. S. Army.

Oh my, no disrespect, the reasons the shooter has and the female soldier giving interviews is really not good. Men in olden days would never shoot up a place for not getting to attend a funeral. My husband was in VietNam and never talks badly and never says a word about what he heard during typing up the messages that were secret.

Fort Hood Shooter’s Facebook Page Puts Face to Rampage

A Facebook page appearing to belong to the man who gunned down three people at Fort Hood Wednesday before taking his own life reveals new details about the veteran.

The social media account is under the name Ivan Slipknot, rather than Ivan Lopez as the shooter has been identified by ABC News sources, but biographical details on the Facebook page match with what is known about the shooter and several of man’s neighbors and a Fort Hood official confirmed the images show Ivan Lopez. Slipknot is the name of a hardcore heavy metal band, seen in a couple pictures on the Facebook page. Fort Hood's Lt. Gen. Mark Milley confirmed Lopez as the gunman today.

The Facebook page shows several photos of Lopez in and out of uniform. One past profile picture, posted in 2013, shows him in full combat gear and a comment on the image made by Ivan Slipknot mentions “memories of Fallujah, Iraq 2011.” Military officials confirmed the Fort Hood shooter had been in Iraq for four months in 2011, but did not see direct combat.

Fort Hood Shooter Ivan Lopez's Chilling Facebook Post: 'The Devil Will Take Me...Green Light And Finger Ready'

Fort Hood gunman Iván López posted a chilling Facebook status just weeks before his deadly rampage in which he said the "devil" had taken him and that he was “full of hatred,” Fox News Latino has learned.

The post dated March 1 alluded to the Army specialist’s roiling anger over his belief he had been robbed.

"I have just lost my inner peace, full of hatred, I think this time the devil will take me," Spc. Iván López posted on his Facebook page.

"I was robbed last night and I am sure it was 2 “flacos” (guys). Green light and finger ready. As easy as that."

I don't wish her a bad time, but I do hope they find her & get her help. If any of you happened to hear her, it seemed to me that she was very near the edge of going ballistic herself. She had this frantic sound. She's either deeply disturbed or an extremely spoiled brat. JMO

BTW, is anyone else having problems getting on this website today? It's been a struggle for me all day long.

He wasn't even at this base when his mom died. He had just come to Ft. Hood in February of this year.

My father was like that. Never a bad word. At least he made it through mind and body in tact.

Have to realize today's America is not what it was then. America is not what I was even raised to believe in. That changes the perspective a bit for military now, and it definitely shows. :(

I live in Texas also. I grew up in Marfa, a small ranching (at the time) community. Lived as an adult in El Paso for a time. I too have been around guns all my life, I own guns. It is a way of life, as you stated. In all my years I never remember hearing people say they were afraid of losing their right to own guns. Until I moved to East Texas and the 2008 Presidential election happened. It was crazy train around here. Stopped in a gun shop because my husband wanted to and the gun dealer was going on about Obama taking our guns away. The prices had been jacked up 2 to 3 times and people were actually buying them at those inflated prices. I don't fear losing my gun rights.

Snip from a local newspaper: http://www.palestineherald.com/features/x1360528736/The-Way-of-the-Gun/print

“We sold 10 AK-47s and SKS assault rifles just last week,” Vinson continued. “You used to be able to buy an SKS for $100, no you can’t hardly find one for $500 — it’s crazy. People are coming in an offering triple the price just to get them.”

“It used to be that people would pawn their guns to pay their bills,” Vinson said. “Now, people are not paying their bills so they can come and get their guns out of pawn.”

I don't think there is any simple explanation, and I wish people would stop always looking for one. If it were so simple and predictable, we'd have stopped it. We don't even really know what was going on with him mentally - many, many people have had issues with anxiety or depression at some point in life - I'd venture a guess that most have. It takes a lot more to drive it in that direction. I do, however, think there are signs, but they are not easily identifiable. And I do not think the signs tend to indicate violence or delusions - it's probably more like an increasing disconnect towards society due to a variety of factors, and a feeling of frustration with the inability to communicate the feelings of alienation and dissatisfaction. It wouldn't surprise me if people look for the wrong signs, and expect more craziness, when people who really totally unstable are usually not the ones who do these things because they can't plan them or hide them. The military is one of the only entities in the U.S. with a lot of discretion to restrict people showing signs of instability or just any behavior they aren't okay with. It does surprise me more when this happens on a military base for that reason. But no one can prevent all of these incidents.
