I would say that these are the people that definitely are the ones who don't need to have guns. I totally disagree with that statement. I would say that persons feel very strongly that they have the right to defend themselves period. Has nothing to do with the 5th amendment and it isn't just in Texas. And when i say defend I am not just talking about defending against another person. Where I live there are snakes, wild boar, and all sorts of creatures that are harmful.
Fort Hood is a small city. Probably over 40,000 people and it is no different than any other small city. There is crime and most of it is never heard of. News picks up on this because it is news worthy. It is horrible, but what makes it more horrible than the 5 or 10 people murdered in Dallas or Chicago every night or day? Gun control is a subject that can be debated forever and I am not trying to start a debate on that subject so I will move on. jmo
I am a strong gun advocate and always will be.
But one thing I do wish they would implement along with FBI criminal background checks is being able to ascertain if the person wanting to purchase the gun has any documented mental illness in his or her background. Real mental illness that has been diagnosed and documented. That is the one thing I would like to see changed.
However this wouldn't have stopped Lopez. PTSD is a disorder and not considered a mental illness. Most all who suffers from it never ever goes out and shoots multiple people either or even one for that matter. So all cant be stigmatized by what a very few do.
And sometimes I think that PTSD becomes a catchall excuse for when someone does something like this. Its a easy blanket to cover up the fact that some killed because they were in a murderous rage. Not a mental illness but a behavioral problem.
I do think this story is different than most. All personnel on our military bases here should be safe and feel safe. To have it happen time and time again is very newsworthy. It shows nothing has been put in place to assure those on our bases (our heroes, families, contractors, and civilian workers) that they can come to work everyday and know they are safe. As of today, once again, they know they are not safe, and remain sitting ducks for the next shooter that will come along.
We owe it to the very people that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. They deserve much better than what they have had to experience. Now they have to bury more. It is a sad tragic dark time in America for all who value our true heroes.
