"Aug 26, 2015

QUEBEC -- The Quebec coroner's office has formally identified the six people who perished when a sightseeing seaplane crashed in a remote area of Quebec's North Shore on Sunday.

The Air Saguenay plane was taking part in a routine sightseeing flight from Lac Long in Tadoussac when it went down, killing everyone on board.

The victims have been identified as Fiona Hewitt, 52, Richard Hewitt, 50, Felicity Hewitt, 17 and Harry Hewitt, 14, all of Great Britain."

A very slow moving investigation into this - no charges brought (as yet), though a number of failings identified, including that, as suspected, the jet was far too long.

The families of those who died have just been denied legal aid funding for the inquest.

"Mr Loughton said: "Over 26 months later no decision has been taken on criminal charges and the coroner's inquest has been delayed again, until November next year."

He said the families were likely to be the only people at the inquest not legally represented.

Mrs May said: "The Department for Transport has accepted the AAIB recommendation to commission an independent review and are working with them to determine the scope of the review.

"There is considerable work going on to learn lessons from this disaster."

Very very tough for those poor families.

The pilot whose plane crashed during the 2015 Shoreham airshow is to stand trial at the Old Bailey over the deaths of 11 men.

Andrew Hill, 54, of Sandon, Hertfordshire, faces 11 counts of manslaughter by gross negligence and one count of recklessly or negligently endangering an aircraft under air navigation laws.

He appeared at Westminster magistrates court on Thursday for a 14-minute hearing during which he confirmed his name, date of birth and address, and indicated a not-guilty plea to all charges.

He is be expected to enter pleas formally at the Old Bailey next month.

The prosecutor, Simon Ringrose, confirmed the crash happened when Hill’s vintage Hawker Hunter jet plunged into traffic on the A27 dual carriageway in West Sussex while trying to execute a loop-the-loop manoeuvre.

The 11 men who died were wedding chauffeur Maurice Abrahams, 76, from Brighton; retired engineer James Mallinson, 72, from Newick, near Lewes; window cleaner and builder Mark Trussler, 54, from Worthing; cycling friends Dylan Archer, 42, from Brighton, and Richard Smith, 26, from Hove; NHS manager Tony Brightwell, 53, from Hove; Mark Reeves, 53, from Seaford; Worthing United footballers Matthew Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, both 23; personal trainer Matt Jones, 24; and Daniele Polito, 23, from Worthing.

Hill, a trained RAF instructor and jet pilot, was thrown clear of the aircraft as it crashed. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and placed in an induced coma before being discharged.

The Old Bailey heard that to perform the stunt, called a bent loop, the plane needed to reach a certain height, Hill 'did not reach the height required, but nevertheless continued the manoeuvre'.

[...]

The court heard until the moment of the crash, there was 'nothing wrong' with the flying capabilities of the aircraft.

Mr Kark [Thomas Kark QC] said: 'It was in excellent working condition. The crash happened purely by pilot error.

[...]

Mr Hill, who served in the Royal Air Force between 1985 and 1994, also faces one charge of endangering an aircraft.

When the disaster happened at the popular air show, he was a captain with British Airways.

Shoreham crash pilot 'didn't get high enough to do a loop-the-loop' | Daily Mail Online

The article goes on to say the trial which is predicted to last 8 weeks is being presided over by senior judge Mr Justice Edis QC.

“The height at which the aircraft was horizontal was too low, probably by as much as 1,000ft (305m) below the height required safely to complete the manoeuvre.

“There was a relatively easy escape manoeuvre that could be performed to avoid pitching the nose of the aircraft fully downwards, which was to roll the aircraft around to its non-inverted position and recover safely.

[...]

Mr Kark told the jurors that although witnesses would describe Mr Hill as a highly competent and experienced pilot, “it has to be borne in mind that any air-crash involving pilot error will normally involve a competent and skilled pilot.”

Opening the case for the defence, Karim Khalil QC said a correct analysis of Mr Hill’s fatal loop would be that he was not in full control of his actions, possibly because the G-forces experienced while manoeuvring the fast jet had caused him cognitive impairment.

In footage shown to the court, a GoPro camera positioned behind the pilot’s seat records the A27 coming into view through the cockpit windscreen. [...]

Jurors in the Shoreham air crash trial have sat in the cockpit of a plane similar to that which crashed in 2015.

The 11 jury members were accompanied by the Old Bailey trial judge Mr Justice Andrew Edis, prosecutors and defence barristers for the visit to the museum in Charlwood, Surrey, close to Gatwick Airport.

Hill said in his statement: “I have no recollection of the accident or the events leading up to it “It is possible I experienced ALOC [altered level of consciousness]. “It is also possible that I may have suffered a cognitive impairment for other reasons or a medical issue.”

He added that he always flew the Hawker Hunter wearing an ‘anti-G’ flying suit, but that it sometimes ‘would not work’.

On Tuesday the court also heard how at the Southport airshow in 2014, a year before the Shoreham crash, Mr Hill flew a jet so low above the watching crowd that he was immediately ordered to stop the display.

The jury was told the incident led to discussion about whether Mr Hill’s Civil Aviation Authority display authorisation should be suspended.

In the end, however, Mr Hill agreed to remove the Derry turn from his display sequence and was allowed to fly at the air show the following day.
