From the Guardian breaking news section

Mark Bridger pleads not guilty to abduction and murder of five-year-old April Jones, who went missing in mid Wales last year. More details soon …

wasn't surprised at all when i heard this, what happens now i wonder..... in the search for April?

11:52 AMHywel Trewyn @HywelTrewynAPRIL JONES: Mark Bridger's defence is that he probably was responsible for April Jones' death *

So, what does that mean? He has denied abduction murder and concealing a body, which leaves?

Doesnt surprise me at all that he pleaded not guilty to everything....if there had been any kind of confession then the police wouldnt still be searching over such a wide ranging area for AJ.

As to the not guilty pleas and the lawyer saying he was probably responsible for her death....

I read that as clever wording.........

MB says he didnt abduct her, but he may have admitted giving her a ride in his car - which he would not term as abduction, because he was a family friend.

Then he could claim either ;

1. he dropped her off somewhere close to her home - for whatever reason she didnt make it home, so he was inadvertently responsible for her disappearance and as it is generally believed that she is dead, then he is * probably responsible* for her death

or

2. He took her back to his house, he fell asleep and when he woke up, AJ was no longer in his house - he might say she must have gone out of his house, trying to get back home, but got lost in the dark and had a fatal accident in the woods or fell into the river

so, no abduction, no murder and no disposal of body, but * probably responsible * for whatever happened to AJ

Hmmm. Quite surprised at the judge allowing the defense statement to be released. How usual is this? Does this indicate that the defense are pushing for a manslaughter deal? So confused with this today:(

He put her in to the river or left her on a hillside. :(

Thats still concealment though

By accident???!!!!!

To say he was probably responsible for her death implies he may not have been. I find the wording very odd. But sadly it seems to confirm that she is dead. As you say, maybe some kind of accident that he couldnt have stopped? The wording denies manslaughter too as if it was this they wouldnt say probably responsible. And why is he not telling police where he disposed of her.

ETA Just read Alyces post so crossposted on this.

Here's the wording from sky news

"The man accused of the abduction and murder of April Jones has appeared in court and pleaded not guilty.

Mark Bridger, 46, sat in the dock at Mold Crown Court flanked by two security guards as details of the charges were read out. He replied "not guilty" clearly to the charges as April Jones' parents stared into the glass-fronted dock.

The judge made an order under the Contempt of Court Act that none of the evidence mentioned should be publicly reported.

But he made it clear that defending barrister Brendan Kelly QCs statement that the defendant was not guilty of murder but that he accepted that he was probably responsible for the death of April could be publicly reported.

Earlier the murmurings from people gathering in Court One fell were silenced as Mr and Mrs Jones walked in with police family liaison officers.

Bridger, who appeared in court wearing jeans and a navy sweater, will face trial next month.

As well as facing charges of abducting and murdering April, Bridger is also accused of unlawfully disposing of and concealing her body with intent to pervert the course of justice."

Why would the judge allow anything to be released publicly now accept the plea?

Could it just be very clever wording by the defence - responsible in that he could have intervened, and is going to implicate some one else?

But why allow that publicly reported I wonder? How does that affect the trial.

How much would have been disclosed at the hearing regarding details of what evidence there is to support the charges?

Trial begins on 25th February.

Very strange.

If he was planning to implicate someone else he should have already told the police about it by now.
