Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but websleuth doesn't allow facebook comments etc here as it's seen as mere gossip and not factual.

Correct. If it is a comment by a member of the public, made on a police or media Facebook page, all we can do is link it and point it out. (Using time and initials is ok) We are not permitted to discuss it.

Football fans have applauded for one minute in memory of a student from Sheffield whose body was found in a river last month.
Sheffield Wednesday supporters made the tribute to 18-year-old Caroline Everest in the 18th minute of their home match against Derby County.

"A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “While officers continue to work to establish the precise circumstances leading to Caroline’s death, through the use of CCTV, police have been able to rule out that her death was caused by the actions of another person."

Am I right in reading that to mean that they've now got CCTV footage that showed nobody else was involved in Caroline's death... rather than police having received toxicology reports back?

A statement from Caroline's family, she sounds a sweet girl, bless her

“We would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude for all the tremendous support we have received during this difficult time. It has been fundamentally every parent’s nightmare.

“Carrie was a thoughtful girl and she cared deeply about her friends and family. She tried so hard to organise her life and the things she wanted to do. She was a young woman with such a strong appetite for living and participating in everything she did. He friends, colleagues, fellow students, all appreciated her willingness to help others, to do everything she could do to make a difference.

“Carrie began dancing with the City Limits dance centre when she was four years old. She loved every style of dance; Latin, ballroom, freestyle, ballet, tap, and most recently had been training for Competition Ballroom. She thoroughly enjoyed the performances, shows and exams. This was also evident in her enthusiastic involvement in the Walkley Ebenezer Amateur Dramatics Society annual pantomime, which she had been involved in for the last five years.

“Carrie made an impact on everyone she had ever met. From nursery to Walkley Primary and Junior School, King Edward VII to City College and finally to Sheffield Hallam University. Her persistence in trying to find part-time work was phenomenal – first volunteering at Dr Barnardo’s charity shop, which then gave her the retail experience she needed to secure a part-time post with B&M stores. Everywhere Carrie went, her colleagues, managers and friends were all full of admiration for her.

“The response to her death – the cards, messages and memories people have shared with us has been overwhelming and her friends on social media have been a great comfort to us in our hour of need.

“For her mum and dad, for her brother and sister, for the extended family of which she was so integral a part, there is a deep sense of loss that is so very, very painful. Caroline gave us so much pleasure and she was so loved, so treasured, that we will carry her memory with us every minute of every day for the rest of our lives. Carrie was a very precious young woman, enthusiastic and caring, loving and genuine. She was always thinking of others and how she could help them. Her radiant smile, marvellous sense of humour and warm-hearted nature made her the perfect daughter, a girl who had so much to give and so much to live for.

“She is now dancing through eternity. Fly high little star.”

I'm not sure. It goes to show how important correct punctuation can be.

Is it
While officers continue to work to establish the precise circumstances leading to Caroline’s death through the use of CCTV, police have been able to rule out that her death was caused by the actions of another person.

Or is it
While officers continue to work to establish the precise circumstances leading to Caroline’s death, through the use of CCTV police have been able to rule out that her death was caused by the actions of another person.

That must mean looking at the CCTV they more or less ruled out another person being involved? Still sounds confusing to me

I think it's the former option in Cherwell's post, but the CCTV footage is surely helping to piece things together to help them rule out certain things.

Whatever happened, my sincere condolences to Carrie's family.

With the toxicology results being due about now and the parents making a statement it does seem more likely that it's the first option (that the toxicology results revealed the cause of death and the parents then felt able to make a statement) but the wording is really confusing.

The wording is fine, but what makes it confusing is the punctuation. One of the commas should not be there, but which one?
I tend to agree with you that the first reading is the more likely. So the first comma should be deleted.

Ok, I should have said "The wording is confusing because of the punctuation" lol.

I'm guessing they'll be an inquest that will reveal a bit more. For now at least Caroline's parents have some comfort knowing that nobody else was involved. Must be such a relief for the man that was accused of rape to have that charge dropped too.

That is how I would read it, as being that the police have cctv that shows Caroline alone by the brook ?

Yes, it does sound as though the toxicology has shown the cause of death, plus the cctv has ruled out the man ( or anyone else ) being with Caroline at the time.

A relief no doubt for the man.
