I just don't know how the families of missing people cope. Especially young people. I would rather know.

He has now been missing linger than his family had him..l hope someone comes forward about this one day. How do the people that know sleep at night?

It's been a long time, where are you?

I keep thinking about Grantham Court Flats. It is rumoured that a POI was working on construction of them at the time. I just think that would be a good way to dispose of a body for good.

The Hampshire missing people loved ones are desperate to find
''Railway staff are to receive specialist training to help them look out for missing people as a list of Hampshire loved ones that families are desperate to find has been released.''

''Instead of traditional missing posters, the scheme will provide SWR with alerts that notify them of missing people who could be using their network''.

''Kate Graham, Communications & Campaigns Manager at Missing People said: “With an estimated 170,000 people going missing every year, having the support of SWR – one of the largest rail networks in the UK – will be crucial in locating people who have gone missing. We hope that by having them onboard, we can offer even more missing people a lifeline, and help to support their loved ones.”

''According to the Missing People's website, there are currently 111 people who are registered as missing in the South-East. 12 of these are from Hampshire. They are:''
  • Charles Knight: Disappeared aged 30 from Burghclere. Missing since 17/02/2021

I wonder if his friends account they decided to go home is accurate - jmo. Edit also if he was seen eating chops earlier in the evening where did he buy them? Or are reports of him eating chips prior to being seen in the chip shop not accurate?

I don't understand why everyone seems reluctant to say what they know now people have died, moved on and loyalties have changed. Unless of course they are up to their necks in it.

Just hoping that anyone with information about Damian, would just reach deep down into their very soul and let his mom know where to find her beloved son.

''Valerie told the County Press at the time of publication that she feared Damien's story had slipped into urban myth, but said she would never give up trying to find out the truth about what happened.

"We are not giving up on Damien at all until there is some sort of finality, even if it is a bag of remains to identify," she said.

The anonymous Crimestoppers number remains an open door for anyone who knows anything — just phone 0800 555 111.

Valerie, husband Ed and their other children, James, Sarah and Melissa, moved to Texas 20 years ago.

It was a wrench for Valerie to leave the Island, but her husband found work in the US and the children settled there, with children of their own.

International missing persons organisation Locate has a file on Damien and will welcome any information.

Damien's sisters set up International Siblings of the Missing. Find it on Facebook or on Twitter at @SiblingsMissing and on Instagram.''

I opened my mouth and it came. It wasn't a cry, or even a sob. It came from deep in my soul... It was the sound of a mother helpless to save her child from danger. I asked the same unanswered questions over and again. Where was he? Where was my Damien?

On 2 November 1996, sixteen-year-old Damien Nettles went out for the evening in his home town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. CCTV recorded him in a chip shop at 23:40 and on the High Street just after midnight. He has never been seen since.

His mother, Valerie, has spent over two decades desperately trying to find out what happened to her son. Arrests have been made, and suspects released without charge. Despite years of research by journalists and a private investigator, Damien's vanishing remains a mystery.

In this hugely moving and compelling account, Valerie Nettles tells the full, perplexing story of her son's disappearance.

Someone must know what happened to Damien. Will the truth ever emerge from the shadows?

Book Description
The true story of every mother's worst nightmare

About the Author
Valerie Nettles was born in the UK and grew up in the Isle of Wight before her family immigrated to the US when she was fifteen. She married her American husband, Ed, a manager with an international freight company, after meeting him at University of New Orleans. They would go on to have four children, including Damien, who was born in Singapore in 1980. The family lived between the UK and the US, following Ed's work, but settled in the Isle of Wight in 1990 to raise their four children. Five years after Damien's disappearance, due to job commitments, the family made the heart-wrenching decision to move. Valerie and Ed returned to the US, and currently live in Texas.

I can't stop thinking about the red van on Baring Road and how it was not traced. I wonder what sort of number plate recognition, if any, operated on the chain ferry back then.

Damien Nettles went missing November 2nd, 1996 on The Isle of Wight,
Hampshire, England. He had been out with friends and parted company
from them at approx 10.30pm. He was seen on Cowes High St by
various people. He was caught on security camera at Yorkie's Chip
Shop on Cowes High Street at approx 11:45pm. He was surrounded by
a group of 5/6 men. Only three of these men have been identified. Two
were army officers who were in Cowes for training in sailing. The other
a local drug dealer, who has since passed away, who was not identified
until after his death. This is odd, as the Isle of Wight is a very small
place and I am surprised that despite pictures and publicity of this video,
it took over six years for someone to identify this individual. The first
two men were identified after a documentary, which aired in January
1997, 2 months after Damien went missing. They were not local. The
National Missing Persons Charity was given an anonymous tip that
these two were from the Army, based in Aldershot. They were
interrogated and claim they did not know anything, however, both of
them held conversation with Damien, as seen on the video.

''The mother of long-term missing teenager Damien Nettles is working with the charity Missing People to re-launch search efforts on the 26th anniversary of his disappearance.''

Damien’s last positive sighting was in the early hours of November 3, 1996, on CCTV.
He was walking, alone, eating chips on Cowes High Street.''

''At the time of his disappearance, Damien was described as white European, 6ft 3in with a slim build, brown eyes, short brown hair.

He has a V-shaped scar on his chin. Damien was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black fleece-style jacket, and black boots. He was also carrying with a small instant camera.''

''In more recent years, as the search for Damien continues, Valerie has used her heartbreak to advocate for other families of missing children and young people.''
Valerie said: “So many people in our family and his friends and wider community are affected by the ripple effect of his going missing. There is a name for this – it is ambiguous loss. If only he understood the dangers. If only we all had.”

Alongside their lived experiences of missing Damien, Valerie and Sarah shared their tips and advice for staying safe on a night out

I'm another just across the water. This case has always stuck in my mind as we are not that far away and visit the island most summers. I really really hope his family find out what happens to him.

Today marks 27 years since Damien went missing. Damien was 16 when he was last seen in Cowes, Isle Of Wight, 02/11/1996

I obviously can't speak for Damien since I didn't know him, but is it just me that thinks that "they're watching us" could have been a sign of mental illness/hallucinations rather than a legitimate threat?
Welcome to Ws @benowens!

''Minutes later - at 11:59 and in the same location - another witness, a foster carer waiting to pick up a child off the bus, was in his car. He described Damien as: "A miserable figure, huddled eating chips."
This foster carer told police the person was approximately 6ft and fitted Damien's description, and was carrying a camera. He said the teenager walked towards him in his car, and that he "looked drugged, and seemed to bank heavily into the car".

The teenager said twice to him: "They are watching us."
After that, the boy wiped rain off his car window and walked off towards the Pier View public house, on the High Street.

Minutes later Damien was caught on street CCTV and then vanished.''
