What it says in s1 of the Repatriation of Prisoners Act 1984 is that you can transfer a prisoner where a) the prisoner consents and b) the "relevant Minister" and the "appropriate authority" in the other country agree to the transfer. Personally I'd guess that Tabak's chances of persuading the government to agree to transfer him to the Netherlands to serve his sentence any time soon are somewhat remote.

So, on top of everything else, you think that us taxpayers are going to have to keep him in board and lodging for the next 20 years?

Personally, I'd rather the Dutch paid for their own criminals.

So would I but I'd hate him to be in any kind of open prison or having a comfortable life. Is there any EU agreement whereby a prisoner serves their time here but their own country pays the bill?

I think he looks exhausted - he was arrested at 6am and presumably hadn't been sleeping brilliantly for the previous month (that part of his testimony I believe - not because of any guilt over Jo, but because he was worried about getting caught).

Yep. I think its fair to say that no-one looks exactly at their most alluring in their mug shots. The police aren't exactly wanting to capture your "best" side.

Yep, let's bill them for the cost of the investigation and trial too.

It could get worse. If he manages to get a spell in a secure psychiatric unit at any point during his stay at HM's pleasure he'll be eligible to receive benefits and an allowance for clothing whilst he's in there too.

I don't know without checking, but I doubt it. They don't pay towards their immigrants when they land over here so aint going to cough up for their gaoled ones either I'd have thought.

I was thinking more along the lines of what Aneurin enlightened me about at #1033

It's an offence under s63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 " to be in possession of an extreme pornographic image" such as one that depicts "an act which threatens a person's life".

Well, possession of extreme pornographic images is a crime. The police are obliged to investigate crime when they become aware of it. Presumably they were unable to do so previously for fear of prejudicing the trial that has just concluded.

That's certainly one possibility. The other is that VT's DNA has been forwarded to the US and the Netherlands for comparison to sex crimes in those locations.

You should see my passport photo. :noooo:

And quite right, too. Justice by the mob is no better than the depravity to which TB sank.

Hear hear! I think for VT, being deprived of his freedom is punishment enough. I feel angry towards him, not just because of what he did to JY and her family, but because of the terrible and stupid waste of his own life. All round tragic.

I think if he'd denied manslaughter, it would have been a different story and the evidence would have been permitted, because it suggests a reason he had his hand round her neck. However, as it stood the fact he had his hand round her neck wasn't contested - the issue at stake was whether he foresaw the consequence of doing so.

This is showing as being written by me in post 1216- it was written by brownbread or cherwell.

Is there something up with the software?

I see The Sun has posted a list of unanswered questions:

12 riddles still not solved

KEY questions over Jo's murder remained unanswered last night despite Vincent Tabak's conviction. They are:

1. WHY JO? Cops are convinced the motive was sexual, but Tabak has never said.

2. WHY DID JO INVITE HIM IN? She was known to be wary of strangers — and did not even know her neighbour's name.

3. WHERE DID HE KILL HER? Forensic evidence indicated the hall of Jo's flat — suggesting she was trying to escape.

4. WHY DID TABAK DRIVE TO ASDA? He had Jo's body in his boot. If he was really desperate for beer and crisps the nearby Tesco was still open.

5. WHAT ROUTE DID HE TAKE TO DUMP THE BODY? CCTV failed to capture him using the Clifton Suspension Bridge to Longwood Lane.

6. WHY WERE JO'S EARRINGS SCATTERED? One was under clothing on the bedroom floor, the second inside the bed under the duvet. The fastening of one has never been found.

7. WHY WERE A PAIR OF JO'S BRIEFS LYING ON A HALL PEDESTAL? The green pedestal itself had been damaged — with broken plastic placed on top.

8. WHY WAS A KITCHEN APRON FOUND FOLDED UP ON THE HALL FLOOR? It was kept in a kitchen drawer and rarely used.

9. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PIZZA? Police sifted 293 tons of trash but never found the Tesco Finest mozzarella and basil pizza Jo bought on her way home — or her missing grey ski sock.

10. WHAT DID TABAK DO WITH THE CLOTHES HE WORE? Forensic experts found no trace of Jo on the clothes police seized.

11. HOW DID HE AVOID BEING SEEN? Tabak claimed three cars drove past him as he tried to dump Jo's body but no driver ever came forward.

12. WHY DID TABAK RETURN TO ENGLAND? After spending New Year in Holland he said he expected to be arrested on his return. But he decided not to flee.

Some of them are interesting, such as what happened to VT's clothes. And there is a reference to forensic evidence in the hall. I wonder what that is.

PS: Also says she was known to be wary of strangers. That's one of the things I had been wondering about her.

This is what I think when he looks up and first sees her he eyes her around the store then pushes the trolley into her and seems agitated ,exited then goes out of the store. Now he could have been waiting for her to return or was hiding somewhere and followed her home, I think he knew Greg was away because LL told him. Now as that video shows he already had his camera, did he really have plans for taking pictures of the snow. Did he really at that point know what he was going to do that night or was it after seeing her there that his mind went into overdrive. Was it his camera that hit the table and splintered it.
But as has been said, why was this not mentioned as evidence if it is him and the lie of where he was at that time. I think that maybe any unanswered questions will be swept under the carpet now as more serious information is being unearthed. Wonder what opinions Jos parents have about how the case was handled.

Hello, :newhere: but been following the case since the beginning and lurking in the background on this forum. Kingfisher, I entirely agree with you. I am sure that the tall guy is VT. If it isn't, I'll eat my hat! If you compare it to his image on CCTV in Asda, it is so similar - and his head! He has such a distinctively shaped head and hairline. His coat is the same and the collar is up in the same way. The bloke has really long legs and arms and looks 6' 4" to me. The camera looks down, so everything is foreshortened which makes everyone look less tall than they really are and also reduces the difference in height between different people.

Wondering why though they didn't show it sooner or use it in the trial to add to the intent to murder claim by the pros. It is so frustrating, that we may never know. :banghead: I wish they would tell us one way or the other, but I don't suppose it is important now, in the scheme of things. And the media are not interested, as they have all this sexual deviance to concentrate upon (not complaining, though).

Hi patacake, and welcome WS's posting world.

The Waitrose character does look like VT though I'm not convinced that that person is a foot taller than JY.

My (entirely hypothetical) magnum opus How To Commit Murder And Get Away with It contains much useful advice for the homicidally inclined and contains a number of cardinal rules which must not be broken in any circumstances, including;

- never volunteer information to the murder investigation
- never show any interest in the conduct of the murder investigation

That's certainly good advice, and those are the points where VT failed. As a result, he turned police suspicions and interest on himself. It seems that guilty parties often cannot avoid showing an abnormal interest in investigations into their own crimes. The saying "the guilty party always returns to the scene of the crime" is an old one. With the internet, they can return to the virtual scene by following news, police and forum infomation. I'm sure that VT thought that he was free and clear when the landlord was detained, thereby becoming more bold in his fingerpointing.

I think he looks exhausted - he was arrested at 6am and presumably hadn't been sleeping brilliantly for the previous month (that part of his testimony I believe - not because of any guilt over Jo, but because he was worried about getting caught).

I read in the Guardian today that the DNA sent to the USA and Netherlands did not link him to any unsolved crimes.

Interesting. That certainly works for sex crime victims that have been found, but VT was very close to making Joanna disappear over the wall - and from what I've read, that could have made a big difference in terms of locating her.

Yep, let's bill them for the cost of the investigation and trial too.

Well he's going to need clothes wherever he is, isn't he ? And if we bill the Dutch for looking after the criminals they have reared and exported to us, and they bill us for the same, are we remotely sure that we shall end up in pocket ?

I'm not convinced of that. The prisoner wil request the transfer and the Dutch gov't will most likely agree based on compassionate grounds. With the prisoner and the Dutch gov't requesting the transfer, I don't see any ground for the Briish gov't to disagree. Is there something I'm missing? Maybe he'll appeal the decision, which would delay any request, but I don't really see gov't officials denying the request.
