From looking online (honestly i had never heard of it before) selective mutism is a complex disorder linked to childhood anxiety. Sufferers can talk but in certain situations or with certain people find they are unable to. It may well be that both Katie and the accused suffered. I note that the accused did not speak at any of her court appearances; even as a juvenile she would be expected to confirm her name etc. But her solicitor did this for her.

All IMO

I wonder if it can run in families?

Among other side effects:

Professor Fazel, who researches the links between mental illness and violent crime, said: ‘People who were aged between 15 and 24 had a 43 per cent higher risk of committing a violent crime when medicating compared to when not medicating.
‘Among the other age groups we didn’t see any associations that were significant at all.’

Thanks. Think there were a lot of revelations the last day, it's only right they take as much time as they can.

Such a sad story all around...
For some reason this reminds me of the Slenderman nurder attempt.

Fluoxetine is the only antidepressant licensed in children in the UK.
The reason that SSRIs (the class of drug fluoxetine is in) increase suicidal thoughts and attempts is because one the first symptoms of depression to improve with it is lack of energy, so patients with suicidal ideation have more energy to attempt suicide. Psychosis can be a symptom of depression, and it might be made worse before better with antidepressants, I'm very surprised this young girl wasn't more closely monitored
:(
Sad to say I have had placements in both inpatient and outpatient children and adolescent mental health services in York and they are massively overstretched and I know when I was at the inpatient unit last august, they had no available beds, with the nearest bed being Birmingham or Edinburgh

That's a theory, not a fact.

I understand the desperate need for these drugs for some people. But the fact of the matter is these are powerful drugs they're giving to children that alter the brain chemistry. As that is happening with still-developing brains, it scares me.

I'm aware of the benefits of these medications. But I feel there is much too much we still don't know about them.

What's disturbing is this child was de for a full assessment but was given powerful drugs and sent on her way to wait. Why medicate before assessing her?

It's a shame she wasn't assessed quickly. Same thing happens here all the time and worse. If she had been hospitalized pending an assessment Katie would still be alive. But hindsight is always 20/20. Few troubled and mentally ill teens kill. I guess it wouldn't be something on their radar.

Teenager who killed York girl Katie Rough to be sent to psychiatric hospital

The teenager who killed seven-year-old Katie Rough will be sent to a psychiatric hospital.

The 16-year-old cried and put her head on her knees as Mr Justice Soole made the interim hospital order at Leeds Crown Court today (Thursday, September 7).

He will sentence her for the manslaughter of Katie on a date yet to be set in the coming months.

Katie was found fatally injured on a footpath last January in Woodthorpe. She lived in Foxwood.

sending her to hospital should have been done a long time ago?
and sentencing delayed again? wonder why

They are only just now sending her to a psychiatric hospital?

How I wish we knew more about what happened to this young girl. <modsnip> There is so much missing to out the pieces together. Reading her reaction to the order for inpatient psychiatric services broke my heart.

Last July, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Prosecution and defence agree she has serious psychiatric difficulties.
The 16-year-old girl cried out, put her head on her knees and buried it in her arms as the judge made the interim order under the Mental Health Act.

Interim order is for 6 months, additional extensions are max w8 days each, cannot be extended past Sept 6 of next year. Estimated time is at least six months.

The judge will then decide whether to make a full hospital order, confining her indefinitely to a psychiatric hospital or whether to pass a custodial sentence, which could be for life.
Of three consulting teenage psychiatric specialists, two believe she can be treated for "depressive condition"; another disagrees.

I believe i read that up until now she has been in a secure childrens unit. Whilst i don't condone what she did in any way i do feel extremely sorry for the girl - if they are imposong this order then she clearly has extremely severe mental health problems

I don't really care what the connection is/was. The case is a very sad one and I'm confident it's being handled in the best way it could be. We don't have the right to know every last detail in some cases and it's for good reason.
