It emerged in court that the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been taken out of school due to the severity of her mental health problems and was under the care of her local mental health team amid concerns she may be suffering psychosis.

Leeds Crown Court heard how she had talked of her belief that people around her were not human and could be robots controlled by a hostile, higher power. Her barrister said she first reported self-harming at Christmas 2015.

Over the next months she was taken into the care of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and, in December 2016, she was prescribed fluoxetine for anxiety and depression as questions were raised over whether she was suffering from psychosis.

Graham Reeds QC, prosecuting, told the court: “This was not formally diagnosed but was flagged up for further investigation.”

[...]

Marjorie Wallace, chief executive of the mental health charity SANE, said: “We trust that the independent inquiry, which must follow this shocking and tragic case, will throw light on whether the young girl who pleaded guilty to manslaughter had been assessed for any risk her disturbed thinking presented, and whether there had been missed opportunities to treat her in a specialist unit.

“There have been campaigns in this region involving young people with mental health needs being shunted hundreds of miles to find treatment that have revealed a serious lack of local services.

There was a lot of speculation on who the teenager is when this first happened. I have not seen any comments today about it. I am very curious if she knew Katie.

The law still protects her identity, unless the courts state otherwise. I think it's safe to say though, that yes she knew Katie.

If you look at the early posts in the thread you may get a sense of it, atm.

She'd not been on the fluoxetine for long and I think it's known to be a risky drug in adolescents. I'm feeling so angry and sad about this.

I am so sorry ... I ended up falling asleep!

I think it's a known side effect that it can make suicidal feelings much stronger. It's not a suitable drug for psychosis but I don't know if it is can cause it.

Antidepressant Meds. For Children and Adolescents:
In the FDA review, no completed suicides occurred among nearly 2,200 children treated with SSRI medications. However, about 4 percent of those taking SSRI medications experienced suicidal thinking or behavior, including actual suicide attempts—twice the rate of those taking placebo, or sugar pills.

In response, the FDA adopted a "black box" label warning indicating that antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in some children and adolescents with MDD. A black-box warning is the most serious type of warning in prescription drug labeling.
The warning also notes that children and adolescents taking SSRI medications should be closely monitored for any worsening in depression, emergence of suicidal thinking or behavior, or unusual changes in behavior, such as sleeplessness, agitation, or withdrawal from normal social situations. Close monitoring is especially important during the first four weeks of treatment. SSRI medications usually have few side effects in children and adolescents, but for unknown reasons, they may trigger agitation and abnormal behavior in certain individuals.

Fluoxetine is the only antidepressant licensed in children in the UK.
The reason that SSRIs (the class of drug fluoxetine is in) increase suicidal thoughts and attempts is because one the first symptoms of depression to improve with it is lack of energy, so patients with suicidal ideation have more energy to attempt suicide. Psychosis can be a symptom of depression, and it might be made worse before better with antidepressants, I'm very surprised this young girl wasn't more closely monitored :(
Sad to say I have had placements in both inpatient and outpatient children and adolescent mental health services in York and they are massively overstretched and I know when I was at the inpatient unit last august, they had no available beds, with the nearest bed being Birmingham or Edinburgh

I have never heard of depression being the cause of an impulse to kill others. While it doesn't say that the killing was attributed to depression, it is implied by the repeated references to it. That and PTSD.

What about all the cases of parental murder suicide? Plenty of loving parents have killed their children as their depressed state makes them think their children are better off dead.

Ive lived in York my entire life and been under the care of the Hospital since I was a child. I have the utmost respect and admiration for our hospital if you are physically ill. I'm sad to say I can't say the same for our mental health services. I've had counselling and therapy through them 2 times, both times I had a 6 month wait for an initial assessment and from what I have heard from others, I was lucky it was that quick. My GP even told me I wouldn't have been offered it if I hadn't had a chronic physical disease that my mental health can impact on.

Just SO incredibly sad and utterly heartbreaking all round.
The trial, plea and sentence will bring little comfort to Katie's family for many reasons.

<modsnip>

Children and young people's mental health care is just SO overworked and underfunded.
