Court 2 - sitting at 10:15 am

THE HONOURABLE MR JUSTICE HILLIARD

Trial (Part Heard)
T20217205 BROWN Mark

T20227007 BROWN Mark

A man accused of murdering two women described himself as a “psychopath with a conscience”, a court has heard.

Mark Brown, 41, from Squirrel Close in St Leonards, is accused of murdering 34-year-old Alexandra Morgan and 33-year-old Leah Ware.

He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Duncan Atkinson KC, prosecuting, read out a message at Lewes Crown Court allegedly sent by Brown to a friend in which he described himself as a “psychopath with a conscience” and hinted at the process the prosecution claim he used to dispose of Leah and Alexandra’s remains.

The message read: I’m going to be very careful how I word this - it happened again, not very long ago when disposing of something.

“It’s a very unpleasant thing to do - an old oil drum, five litres of diesel and hey presto, there’s not very much left.

“It gets hot, very hot, it glows almost white. The things I have done weigh heavily on my heart, on my head and my soul. A psychopath with a conscience - it’s a joke really.”

[...]

Mr Atkinson told the court Alexandra was a sex worker and had arranged to meet Brown at a site he rented - Little Bridge Farm near Hastings.

Her remains, including burned bone fragments and teeth, were found inside an oil drum in a skip at a building site near Sevenoaks in Kent, where Brown was working at the time of her disappearance.

Brown has admitted to disposing of Miss Morgan’s body “in a panic” after what he claims was an accident in which she died.

The court heard that she first met Brown in March 2018 and their relationship developed and she lived in a static caravan and later a converted shipping container at Little Bridge Farm until the prosecution say she was killed.

Leah told friends and family in the months before her disappearance that Brown had become more controlling of her actions and behaviours, and had sometimes locked her inside the shipping container.

Her remains have never been found, with Brown maintaining that she is still alive.

However, in messages to friends, Brown told different people she had been “sectioned”, sent to a “mental hospital”, or had “killed herself”, referring to Leah in the past tense.

The trial continues.

A builder accused of murdering two prostitutes and burning their bodies on his remote farm called himself a 'psychopath with a conscience', a court has heard.

Mark Brown, 41, of Squirrel Close in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, is on trial accused of murdering Alexandra Morgan, 34, and Leah Ware, 33. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Both women, who had been working as escorts and were registered on an adult website, went missing in Hastings six months apart last year.

Hove Crown Court today heard that father-of-one Brown killed both sex workers at a remote farm and buildings he rented near Hastings and then torched their bodies.

Forensic officers later found bone fragments and teeth belonging to Miss Morgan, a mother-of-two, inside an old oil drum in a skip at a building site in Sevenoaks, Kent where Brown had been working.

The trial began at Hove Crown Court today as 12 jurors and two spares were sworn in by Mr Justice Nicholas Hilliard.

The keys to Miss Morgan's car, a white Mini Cooper, were also found at the building site.

Miss Ware, a mother-of-three from Hastings, East Sussex, was last seen by a friend in the early hours of May 6 2021. She was also a sex worker operating from the same website as Miss Morgan and first met Brown as a client in March 2018.

Miss Ware, 33, from Hastings, was a mother-of-three who lived a 'chaotic' lifestyle. She did not have custody of her children and had a history of mental illness and drug use.

The court was told a close relationship developed between Brown and Miss Ware and they saw each other regularly.

He took a lease on a flat and moved Miss Ware in with money from her benefits allegedly being paid directly to him for rent.

By May 2019 she had moved to Little Bridge Farm, first in a static caravan and then in a converted shipping container inside a barn on the site, until the prosecution say she was killed on May 7 last year.

Miss Ware described to friends and family in the months before her disappearance that Brown had become more controlling of her actions and behaviours – and sometimes he locked her inside the shipping container.

Miss Ware lived at the farm with her two dogs, a Pomeranian called Lady and a Mastiff called Duke, to whom she was devoted. She also had a as well as a horse, Bertie, and some goats.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson KC told the court today Mark Brown, 41, met Alexandra Morgan, 34, through her work as an escort on Adultwork.com and had arranged a meet-up on the morning of November 14 last year, when she went missing.

She was seen arriving at Little Bridge Farm in Hastings, East Sussex - which Brown rented - at 7.58am in her white Mini Cooper, following a gold Jaguar owned by her alleged killer up a track into the site.

Alex did not leave the site but Brown left that afternoon in his Jag, it was said.

He returned in a white work van shortly after 10pm and then left in Alex's Mini at around 12.35am - returning an hour later and then leaving again in his van, it is claimed.

Days later he text a pal asking for help to move the Mini and it was discovered in a residential street with false plates, it is said.

Brown was arrested on suspicion of Alex's murder on November 25 and five days later detectives discovered a burnt-out oil drum with teeth inside in a skip at a building site in Sevenoaks, Kent, where Brown had been working, the court heard.

Goodness me. It’s all coming out, and in stark detail. I followed this closely at the time.

The fact both women were sex workers highlights the unique dangers that industry poses; and I’d wager a large majority of sex workers don’t do it as a lifestyle choice. Very sad.

The dog too...

Miss Ware lived at the farm with her two dogs, Duke and Lady, to whom she was devoted.

In the days immediately after the prosecution say she died, Duke was re-homed with Brown's sister but Lady, a Pomeranian, has not been seen since.

However, during a police search of Little Bridge Farm, the skeletal remains of a Pomeranian were found in a pond on the site, at the end of a collar and lead tied to a weight.

The prosecution argue that these are Lady's bones.

"A MUM left clues to find her killer after fearing she would be murdered when an alleged double murderer texted her, a court heard.

Alex Morgan, 34, left a note and directions to Little Bridge Farm where she worried she would die, Duncan Atkinson KC told a jury.

Mark Brown, 41, of East Sussex, denies murdering two women at Little Bridge Farm.

The jury were shown screenshots of WhatsApp messages between mum Alex and Brown in the days before she disappeared on November 14 last year.

A mum who disappeared and is alleged to have been murdered left a "handwritten trail of clues" for her sons and police before she vanished, a court has heard. Handwritten notes from Alexandra Morgan were found in her home after she disappeared in November 2021.

A jury at Hove Crown Court heard on Wednesday (October 19) that the notes were found in multiple places at Alexandra's home in Cranbrook, Kent when it was searched by police following her disappearance. The notes from Alexandra, known as Alex, gave outline details of her planned Sussex meet up with murder-accused Mark Brown on November 14, 2021, including a location, a prompt to check photographs and the pin number to access her mobile phone.

The second day of the trial heard that Brown had offered Alex Morgan a highly-paid job at a hotel in Brighton at which he worked as security. She met with Brown on the morning of November 14, being seen on CCTV following him onto land that Brown used at Little Bridge Farm, off Rock Lane in Hastings.

Prosecutor Duncan Atkinson KC claimed that Alex "realised that it [the job] may not be above board" because she left a "trail of clues for her sons, and the police, to find". Alex had left a note on a desk in her living room for her son, which read "let's go rollerblading" - in her son's bedroom was a box containing those rollerblades.

Brown alleged to have driven Alexandra's car to her home

The prosecutor tells the jury that there had been no automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) activations for Alexandra Morgan's Mini Cooper since 7.42am on November 14 - the court heard yesterday that it was driven to the farm.
Mr Atkinson KC alleges that there were ANPR activations in the early hours of November 15, which he says is consistent with the car heading to Alexandra Morgan’s home and then back again. However, the prosecution alleges that it was Mark Brown who was driving the Mini in the early hours of November 15.
The prosecutor says:
Moreover, the defendant’s mobile number connected to a cell site close to Morgan’s home address between 1.01 and 1.19am before returning to connect to the Little Bridge Farm cell site again at 1.43am.
He adds that this is confirmed by CCTV footage.
The white van left the farm site again at 2.01am on November 15 and can be tracked to Brown's home, Mr Atkinson KC says.

Brown offered Alexandra Morgan a job days before she went missing

Mr Atkinson KC tells the jury that text messages appear to show Brown offering Alex Morgan a job in the days before she went missing, with a pay in the range of around six figures.
He says:
Taking stock, therefore, of what Alex Morgan thought she was doing when she headed to the defendant’s lockup on November 14. The defendant had offered her an extremely well paid job at the hotel that he provided security at, and thus in Brighton, about which she had to be quiet.

She clearly realised it may not all be above board as she left the trail for her sons and the police to find.
Mr Atkinson KC says that Brown had carried out internet searches on November 6, 2021 on the word "beaten" and the word "rape".
The prosecutor adds:
The defendant thereafter sought to deal with the two things that remained to link him to the killing of Alexandra Morgan – her car, and her body.

Police spoke with Mark Brown on November 23

While pursuing a missing persons inquiry, police went to Little Bridge Farm on November 23, 2021. There, they spoke with Mark Brown.
The prosecution tell the jury that Brown told police he knew Alex Morgan as he had used her sexual services since May/June 2021 from the adult work website.
He is also alleged to have told police that he met Alex at 8am on November 14 at his workshop at the farm.
Mr Atkinson KC details what Brown is said to have told police:
They had engaged in sexual activity and she had departed again in her Mini at 8.45am. He said that he had remained at the workshop, and had slept there until his partner, Lisa Clarke, had arrived in her S-type Jaguar and made him go home.
The evidence shows that account to have been significantly untrue and in keeping with his pattern of lies and false trails.

Brown 'told his boss he was going to be arrested for 'double' murder'

The prosecutor now tells the jury about an alleged conversation Brown had with Alan Downs, his boss. It is alleged that Brown told his boss he was "going to be arrested" for "murder" when he asked him about it at the Sevenoaks Obsidian site.
Mr Atkinson KC says:
Alan Downs spoke to the defendant about what was going on when he saw him at the Obsidian site later on November 24. The defendant told him “the police have my phone and I am going to be arrested”. He was asked what for and said “Murder.. double… I’m going away for 25 to life".
The refernce to double-murder came at a time when he had not been arrested for the murder of Leah Ware. When asked if he had done it, Brown replied “I can’t comment at this time” and added “I’ve got to take this one”. He also told Downs “it depends on what they find at my yard”.
