OK I had a really weird dream about Rolf Harris last night, I went out to visit someone who was in jail and Rolf was his 'room mate', and I say room mate because they lived in a nice apartment in a complex with other low risk prisoners and radicalised celebrities (Hilary Clinton was there for a BBQ the day I went) anyway the apartment was lovely, I took photos to sell to the media of course, and we all went out for a walk, Rolf said he was happy with the surrounds but did seem sad when I asked him if he could paint and he said no. He had developed a new hobby, he was interested in wooden balloons that had appeared and he assumed were being made by the youth, we spotted one and he shot it down, it turned out it was one large balloon made by patching a few others together, at the end of the apartment complex there was even a rather nice pub. He actually seemed like a really nice bloke and I enjoyed the visit.

Not sure why I had that dream, I have no real fondness for Rolf Harris. Glad it's a custodial sentence, I guess he'll be out in less than 3 years and that's fine by me .. interested to see if other victims cases go to court at all here, in a way I hope they don't ..

It looks like the sentence is to be reviewed .. It's been referred onto a govt body that addresses too lenient sentencing. Sorry on phone so can't link.

I also agree with the removal of his art and awards - I don't think it's about trying to delete him from history, I think it's more about taking the celebratory status away from an abuser.

What will that achieve? Hitler`s art can be bought/sold/viewed, and he makes Rolf look like a saint.

what suprises me is that people seem shocked, expecially with saville, i was 10 years old and watching saville on tv, i don't see that he ever hid the fact that he was a sleazy dude, he would have the mike in one hand- and the other hand was wandering on the girls crowded round him. Rolf was just eccentric. Parents push and want their children to hang around these celebrities. I was groped by many,(not celebrities unfortunatly) my mom, just said it happens to everyone, stay out of arms reach. It was irritating but traumatic -no. When violence or force is used, then its traumatic. I just find these trials depressing for the many who endured worse, back in the day jmo

Brazen Rolf Harris wanted to star in WA child protection video in 1980s

From article:Criminologist Carol Ronken told The Sunday Times “extremely manipulative” child sex offenders didn’t just groom their victims, but entire organisations and communities.

Ms Ronken said by placing themselves in positions of trust, abusers could silence their victims, gain access to kids and appease feelings of guilt.

Totally agree, this is classic sweeping it all under the rug behaviour which is half the problem.

In the early 1980's i visited bio dad in UK, he comes from old money, we had dinner at millionares place, long table, decadent assortment of people. The rich man had, had a contest advertised in local paper(midlands close to stratford) - wood nymphs - aka totally naked mostly grammar school girls 16 or younger, posing naked in the woods amongst the bluebells --he showed me the polaroids-(some things you don't forget) i stayed out of arms reach for rest of eve..
Its that its only people with $$$$ that get these historical charges, that bothers me jmo

Yep, I think the problem is this: If you are molested by somebody that is not well known then how on earth would you become aware if other victims came forward later if you had no connection to the molester afterwards, you wouldn't know. It's the safety in numbers thing that helps other victims come forward in these high profile cases .. and that's why it's difficult for the first victim to speak up too, they think 'Oh who is going to believe me, it was 20 years ago, what is the point of bringing it all back up now, I'm only going to hurt his family, I should really just get over it, what good would it do anyway, plus I don't want the world to know..' etc .. and of course the people around the perpetrator also want to keep things hush hush if someone does come forward, so there may be charges brought, but it will all be explained away as something else to people outside of the marriage or immediate family too .. all this just helps the molester get away with it IMO, and they know it too.

Eek, that guy sounds like a modern day Norman Lindsay wannabe. Re historical cases & $$$, I think the media is probably to blame for this. Much like domestic violence assaults, they only report cases that have a particularly sordid detail, end in murder or involve a "public identity".

I personally know of 2 historical cases in recent years that involved accused men who are working class - lower middle class. I can't prove this because the cases received no media coverage whatsoever. I live in New South Wales, so what I can offer to back this up are the Dec 2012 - Dec 2013 sexual assault stats from the NSW State Government - they recorded 33, 796 sexual assault incidents. I'll be surprised if more than 100 received any mention in the media, covering them all would mean reporting around 649 a week, 92 per day, or almost 4 per hour for the entire year.

Unfortunately, sexual assault involving non-famous/wealthy people is just too common to be of public interest

I am a bit nervous about saying this but - I don't think compensation claims should be pursued. Money can't help repair any damage now in this case, after so long, imo. An apology and acknowledgment would be more useful. And claims may cast doubt on the motives of other victims coming forward.

Harris's career and reputation is ruined and being the age he is, and so high profile, he is unlikely to be able to attempt the same kind of thing ever again without being reported immediately so......I'm not sure further charges should be pursued, unless other victims really want them to be, for their own peace of mind.
I have every respect for your opinion but I cannot agree with it. Speaking from experience these victims deserve compensating just as much .. if not more so .. than people who suffer accidents or slander etc.

My husband was sexually abused by his scout master during the 70's .. it's something I've known about for over sixteen years. He has told nobody else, until recently. That is .. he did try and broach it with his mum (at the time) but she was outraged that he would suggest such a thing .. the man was a pillar of the community and all that tosh (scout master was also a director of a local company.)

I don't think people have any idea of the emotional impact this kind of abuse in childhood has upon a person. The adult you become is not the adult you would have become otherwise. My husband has never .. since those days .. had a male friend or a best friend. He doesn't socialise with men and doesn't trust authority figures. It's made his working (and social) life hell. He is deeply uncomfortable with banter and horseplay and this makes him an outcast. People mistake his reserve for indifference and management pass him over for promotion and overtime because he just can't play the 'you scratch my back .. I'll scratch yours' game which sadly is so often required. It is excruciating for him to have to listen (and this happens all the time now) to people laughing, joking and opining about the current climate re: sexual child offenders and their victims. Their view is often that the 'so called' victims have just come forward to get their hands on some cash. I think this puts a fresh dent in him every time he hears it. They don't know his history of course .. it's all open season to them. We are very close but it's always been a struggle emotionally .. there is a closed door that I can't get through. It ruins his relationship with the younger members of our family. He is just too aware of their innocence and it all comes back and .. again .. he feels awkward if they want to jump all over him etc which all children do (we have no children which seemed like a curse .. but perhaps is a blessing as I would hate to see him go through the torture every day) .. he feels bad for having these thoughts .. he should be able to just play with them and be in the moment and not worry. Because he kept silent he feels guilty, other children may have suffered .. the scout master had an adopted son who 'seemed weird' .. my husband tortures himself about what this might have meant and how he may have been able to stop it if he had had courage.

My mum received £50,000 compensation for breaking her hip at work. It was the end of her working life actually and as she was only in her 40's at the time I don't think this was particularly generous but my husband to me has suffered far more .. it has dictated his whole life and shaped who he is and who he is is not easy for him to live with. We know that Bindi's friend has struggled to live her life as she should have .. possibly it has made work difficult or even impossible .. it's assumed that sexual abuse couldn't possibly cause financial hardship but of course it does. It may be a confidence issue or the fact that a victim has fallen into some kind of addiction or depression. Money won't ultimately change things but money doesn't change the fact that you have a broken limb or someone has called you a liar when you're not either. Justice is the main thing and that is something my husband is seeking now but even with that and counselling I doubt he will ever be able to put it behind him. If you could actually see the impact physically .. you wouldn't be able to look at it, these are broken people.

There is much about the Yewtree investigation that I am uncomfortable with but I'm thankful to it because it has given courage to people like my husband to come forward .. to know that they will be taken seriously and listened to. It is an uphill battle though, the victims have to re-live every detail and this also has an adverse effect on them. Husband is actually going through hell at the moment and is only at the statement stage.

My apologies for rambling on so .. and in my first post too :iamashamed: .. I just wanted to get some thoughts down.

:wagon: Pumblechook!! Great first post .. I agree with you! There are so many reasons people don't speak up and some reactions to this case just show how much work there still is to do! (((Hugs))) to you and your husband xo

I don't think that's the case, it's just the media coverage which focusses on (salivates over?) the famous (rather than rich, necessarily) people. I know of at least one case which the police are investigating (I won't share any details just in case) where I'm pretty sure the defendants aren't rolling in money.

More ugh. There's now a suggestion his U.K anti-child abuse video was plagiarised anyway.

Thanks for your understanding and also for the hugs xx Yes .. long way to go but definite progress which is good.
Actually I've been lurking for ages because I've developed an unnatural obsession with the Oscar Pistorius case :blushing:

TV presenter says Rolf Harris abused her on live TV as wife looked on; singer says Harris licked her neck when she was 15

Former TV presenter Vanessa Feltz says Harris slid his hand up her dress while she interviewed him on live TV, while singer Linda Nolan also came forward to say she was abused by Harris when she was 15.

PLUMBER ‘FOUND CHILD *advertiser censored* IN HARRIS HOME’

A PLUMBER reportedly found a stash of child *advertiser censored* videos under the floorboards of Rolf Harris’s home in south-east London in the 1970s, but only reported the find to police in 2012.

The plumber has spoken out for the first time to reveal he was fixing the pipes in Harris’s home in Sydenham when he allegedly came across the videos.
....
It was only when entertainer Jimmy Savile was exposed as one of Britain’s worst paedophiles in 2012 that the plumber reported his find to police.

The search occurred before Harris’s arrest but it put him on the radar of detectives from Operation Yewtree.

So is this how the investigation into Rolf Harris started?

Just a thought .. if it was so well known that Rolf Harris was an octopus / creep in the industry, where were the royal minders who decided it was a great idea to get him to do a portrait of the Queen, get all up front and cosy with her, do a doco about the experience and award him with OBE's and all the other little awards he got off the palace?

What's up with that .. surely they knew too since half the women in the UK were groped by him.

Same goes for Jimmy Saville ..

Idiots.

New Zealander lodges formal complaint against Harris

http://www.news.com.au/world/breaki...ins-about-harris/story-e6frfkui-1226985540325

A NEW Zealand makeup artist has made a formal complaint to police saying she was sexually assaulted by entertainer Rolf Harris in the 1980s.
HARRIS was found guilty last week in London on 12 charges of indecent assault on four women, and sentenced to five years and nine months in jail.
Lee Howden has now told New Zealand police about an alleged assault by Harris when she was in her late 20s and doing his makeup ahead of a television appearance in Christchurch.
She told Radio New Zealand on Friday that she had made the complaint because of Harris's lack of remorse in court and to support the young girls he had assaulted.
"I feel tremendously for the young girls. He may have only got a couple of years, but he has given them a life sentence," she said.
The length of Harris's sentence, which may allow him parole in less than three years, has been referred to the UK attorney-general to decide whether to appeal against its leniency.
"What has made me really cross is his inability to front up, to apologise to those young women. I suspect he is just a total narcissist - in denial," Ms Howden said.
NZ Government MP and former broadcaster Maggie Barry said last week that Harris had groped her in a radio studio in the 1980s.
Police are asking anybody with information about potential offences by Harris in New Zealand to contact them
