A set of recycling bins in Sandwich, around 30 miles away from Ashford, is among several areas in the seaside town which have been cordoned off today.

A witness told MailOnline: ‘The main car park area is closed and they have closed the whole of the ropewalk area. ‘They look like they are going to look in the recycling bins. It’s understood police have still have not found Sarah’s phone, so the talk here is that the phone is what they are looking for.

What will happen at Wayne Couzens' next court appearance in Sarah Everard case

Sarah Everard: What will happen at Wayne Couzens' next court appearance

Why did he appear at a magistrates’ court?
Suspects charged with a serious crime, namely an indictable-only offence, cannot be tried by magistrates. The inevitable question has been asked, therefore, why Couzens appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

All criminal cases begin at magistrates’ court regardless of the seriousness of the crime. This first appearance at a court is known as a preliminary hearing.

What will happen at the Old Bailey?
Couzens is listed to appear at the Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, on Tuesday.

A defendant whose case is sent to a Crown Court will be asked to plead guilty or not guilty to each charge on their indictment.

It is often the case, though, that a defendant is not arraigned at their first Crown Court appearance. In this instance, a future date will be set for a plea and trial preparation hearing (PTPH).

''Police are continuing to search woodland behind an abandoned leisure complex where the body of Sarah Everard was found inside a large builder’s bag.

Eight Metropolitan Police vans are parked in Fridd Lane close to the once-popular Great Chart Golf and Leisure Complex near Ashford, which has been at the centre of the murder probe since Wednesday morning.''

The Met said tonight: "On Friday 12 March, the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards was made aware of an inappropriate graphic that was allegedly shared via social media by a probationary MPS police constable with some colleagues.

"The sharing of the graphic was reported by a number of these officers who were concerned by its content.

"Given the context of the officer’s duties at the time, a voluntary referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in relation to this matter.

"The PC had been deployed as a cordon officer supporting the search operation in Kent in relation to the murder of Sarah Everard. The officer has been removed from these duties and placed in a non-public facing role while enquiries continue.

"The graphic does not contain photographic images, no images of Sarah, nor any other material obtained from or related to the investigation into Sarah’s murder.

"Sarah’s family have been made aware of the incident."

The hunt for Sarah's phone continues: Police scour drains and bins in search for key evidence | Daily Mail Online

16 March 2021
Today they switched their attention to rubbish bins and drains, where they lifted grates to use sticks to try and clear debris for examination.

They were also seen carefully checking below a step near public toilets in the car park where they have been based for the past 48 hours.

Above them was a sign for CCTV cameras around the site, the footage on which may yield more clues as the town's Ropewalk area remained taped off.

There is currently rain pouring down there, which may slow down some of the searches.

Search teams dredge drains in Sarah probe

16 March 2021

Officers in the Sarah Everard murder case were this morning dredging drains.

Beth Robson, reporter at the scene, observed them using a machine and scouring through the sludge once it was brought up.

This was at the Guildhall car park in Cattle Market.

Ms Robson said this morning: "They are lifting drain covers, pulling up everything inside and combing it finely to look for any clues."

Officers were particularly centred around Millwall, a pathed area surrounding a stream, and all its entrances and members of the public were being turned away from there.

Ms Robson added: "There has been a dredger arrived and I wonder if that has been used to dredge part of the stream or not been needed."

Cop at Sarah Everard crime scene sent vile parody of Highway Code to seven officers | Daily Mail Online
16 March 2021

The probationary officer, aged around 22, is said to have sent the ‘meme’ – a shared joke image – to seven colleagues as he manned a cordon in woods near Ashford, Kent, where the 33-year-old’s body was found.

It shows a policeman going through six stages from abduction to murder in a pastiche of the Highway Code.
