Sarah Everard case sparks outpouring from women sharing stories of abuse on UK streets - CNN
11 March 2021
Police making door-to-door inquiries in the case reportedly warned women not to venture out alone, prompting some to comment that this approach only fuels the culture of blaming victims. The deluge of social media reaction provides ample evidence of women's concerns and are testament to the toll that a lifetime of vigilance takes on women's well-being.

CLARIFICATION FROM @Tortoise
Police announce that the Met has made 5 self-referrals to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

    • Mandatory referral, linked to the conduct of the man arrested. IOPC determined this should be locally investigated by the Met Police.
    • Voluntary referral, linked to the conduct of the man arrested. IOPC determined this should be locally investigated by the Met Police.
    • Mandatory referral, linked to actions of police after Sarah was reported missing. IOPC assessment is still outstanding.
    • Voluntary referral, linked to “a conduct matter” in relation to the investigation into the “separate allegations of indecent exposure”. IOPC has determined that this will be subject to an independent IOPC investigation.

The IOPC’s investigation follows a conduct referral from the MPS in relation to two officers, received last night, which is linked to four other referrals. The police watchdog now investigating whether officers responded "appropriately" to a report.
...A source today told The Standard: "It’s definitely not that police did nothing about the indecent exposure or that they turned a blind eye to a crime by a colleague. But the question will be whether the case was progressed quickly enough."

11 March 2021
The family of Sarah Everard have described her as a “shining example” who was “kind and strong” as they appealed for anyone with information to help detectives.

While formal identification awaits, in a statement today, Thursday, 11 March, the family said:

“Our beautiful daughter Sarah was taken from us and we are appealing for any information that will help to solve this terrible crime.

“Sarah was bright and beautiful - a wonderful daughter and sister. She was kind and thoughtful, caring and dependable. She always put others first and had the most amazing sense of humour.

“She was strong and principled and a shining example to us all. We are very proud of her and she brought so much joy to our lives.

“We would like to thank our friends and family for all their support during this awful time and we would especially like to thank Sarah’s friends who are working tirelessly to help.

“We are so grateful to the police and would like to thank them for all they are doing. We are now pleading for additional help from the public.

“Please come forward and speak to the police if you have any information. No piece of information is too insignificant. Thank you.”

Sarah Everard profile: 'Caring and fun-filled' marketing executive attracted friends wherever she went
Born in Surrey in 1987, she was the youngest of three children, with older siblings James and Katherine. The family moved to York when Sarah was still young after her father, Jeremy, 67, got a job as professor of electronics at the city's university.

Her mother Sue, 63, worked as a support officer at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The family home was in a quiet cul-de-sac, in the Heslington area of the city and Sarah would often be seen playing in the street with her siblings and other local children.

On Thursday, neighbours who watched her grow up described how they were struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

One said: "I keep seeing it on TV, that picture of her smiling face and then it hits me each time 'that's Sue and Jeremy's daughter'.

"I keep wondering in my head what I'll say when they come home. But what can you say? This is the worst thing that could possibly happen to anyone.

"Sarah was already living away but I'd see her when she came home to see her parents, I can't stop thinking about what they're going through."

The two other neighbours in the small close, one of whom had known Ms Everard since childhood, were too distressed to comment.

She attended the local comprehensive school where she was remembered as an incredibly likeable and popular girl who excelled at sport and did well academically.

The tragic news of recent days was said to have had a huge impact on the whole school community. Steve Lewis, the headteacher said: "Sarah was a vibrant, caring and much valued member of our school community.

"She left Fulford School in 2005. She is still lovingly remembered by those who taught and knew her. Her joy, intelligence and positive spirit shone within the school. She was a lovely pupil and friend.

"Her family and friends are part of our community and our thoughts and warmest wishes go to all who have been lucky enough to have had her in their lives."

It is no exaggeration to say that the latest news has affected people all over the world.

She was in a relationship with fellow marketing executive Josh Louth and the pair were excited about their future.

Mr Louth was the last person to speak to her on the night she disappeared.

Posting a tribute online, former colleague Holly Morgan, summed up the feelings of so many of her friends: "I had the absolute pleasure of working with and becoming friends with Sarah Everard over the last few years. Truly the kindest, sweetest and most fabulous human.

"I feel so grateful of the time I got to share with her. She was, and continues to be, so loved. My love, thoughts and prayers to her family and loved ones right now. Words cannot express."

The Independent Office for Police Conduct also announced they are investigating the Met over the apparent failure to act on the indecent exposure report.

A man is alleged to have exposed himself to female staff at the take away on February 28.

The incident is said to have been captured on CCTV.

Staff reported it to police on the night.

However, no action was taken in connection over the alleged incident. Had he been arrested over the allegation, would automatically have had his “blue ticket” firearm licence revoked and suspended from duty.

Former Met detective chief inspector Mick Neville said: "He would have been suspended from duty and would have been at home."

Organisers of a gathering in memory of Sarah Everard have claimed the Metropolitan Police have 'reversed their position' on permitting the vigil to take place.

Those arranging the 'Reclaim These Streets' event said the Met initially responded positively to the proposed plans, telling organisers they were 'developing a local policing plan' to allow it to go ahead.

However, organisers now say police have claimed their 'hands are tied' by current Covid-19 regulations, adding those in charge could be fined and prosecuted under lockdown legislation.

Sarah Everard: Murder and kidnap charges authorised | The Crown Prosecution Service
12 March 2021

Following a referral of evidence by the Metropolitan Police related to the death of Sarah Everard, the CPS has authorised the police to charge Wayne Couzens with murder and kidnapping.

He will appear at Westminster magistrates' court tomorrow (13 March) for his first hearing.

The function of the CPS is not to decide whether a person is guilty of a criminal offence, but to make fair, independent and objective assessments about whether it is appropriate to present charges to a court to consider.

Criminal proceedings are now active and nothing should be published that could jeopardise the defendant’s right to a fair trial.
