DETECTIVES SEARCH MAZE OF TUNNELS NEAR COP'S FAMILY GARAGE

Detectives probing Sarah Everard's disappearance have been searching a maze of tunnels near the Met police officer suspect's former family garage.

Teams of cops have been carrying out a major search on the cliffs of Dover, scouring miles of tunnels and old military fortifications for clues.

A disused garage that was run by the Couzens family until 2015 was among locations searched by cops at Dover, The Times reports.

Met Police officers searched an underground network of rooms and military fortifications at the cliffs near the Kent town's harbour.

The maze of tunnels, which date back to the 19th century, were used as a shelter during World War Two.

Phew- at least closing overnight has helped me to catch up.

Will be interested to see if they release any more details today. How much notice do they usually give about a press conference?

I’ve also seen that the Met have tried to ban the planned protest/vigil on Saturday which doesn't seem to be a very good reading of the strength of public feeling. JMO

Open question to legal minds of WS:

Should WC be charged, would his Defence team look at using all the Trial by media and online comments which pretty much have declared WC guilty before being charged, even though we haven't seen any of the evidence? To say that their client has no chance of a fair trial. I'm not sure if that Defence has worked at all in the past.

As an example, there are many comments in this series of threads that talks about WC as though he is definitely guilty, without using the words 'allegedly' or 'suspect' etc. even though no one here has seen any of the evidence.

Police search military tunnels near family garage of Sarah Everard murder suspect cop | Daily Mail Online

Interesting bit of background info on WC.

MailOnline can reveal that Couzens had his first armed police job protecting Dungeness Nuclear Power station as part of Britain's Strategic Escort Group.

It saw him equipped with a Heckler & Koch G36 rifle as he accompanied nuclear material being transported around the country by road, rail or sea.

But the prestige role came to an abrupt end when he suddenly failed his yearly fitness test. It meant he was effectively demoted to guarding the power station building with the travel halted.

I also wonder about the clear discussion as though he is guilty - but with no disrespect to this website which I think is fantastic, I don’t think it’s mainstream enough for that to be enough for him to be deemed unable to have a fair trial.

the mainstream media is another thing entirely. However it would take something fairly extreme for him to not be tried at all in my opinion. The court can take measures to mitigate the impact of the media coverage, such as in instruction to the jury, but I don’t think we are in the realms of WC being unable to be tried at all due to the coverage.

ETA I’m not a criminal lawyer. A lawyer but not in this field, this is just from reading I have done about this in the past.

Re: tunnels, I could only find this map that is apparently redrawn from 19th century maps. Picture was low quality so I added notes to show where it is. It seems to align with this from the Times(paywall unless subscribe for free month)…
Metropolitan Police officers examined the entrance to a network of tunnels and a deep shelter running underneath the garage. The entrance is blocked with a metal gate with a new padlock. The tunnels are part of 19th-century ammunition magazine that was extended into a shelter during the Second World War. They also began searching a gun emplacement — St Martin’s Battery — directly in front of the garage.
