What evidence did they have to a) make the arrest b) charge him?
Don't forget he'd already told police that Tia was there on the Friday morning she went 'missing'. He said she left the house at 12.10. Once the body was discovered in the loft, it was pretty obvious that Tia hadn't left the house at all. So the police knew Hazell had lied about that morning's events and I suppose that gave them enough ammunition to arrest and charge him.

Yes, they only have to have reasonable evidence for suspicion, they don't have to actually have proof until the trial!

Mods - can we move this thread now that the body has been confirmed as Tia's?

Regarding the funfair, it seems to me like they never went and checked there at all. It feels like SH just threw that out as a reasonable place to search because of 1) children and teenager's attraction to funfairs, a place they regularly socialise 2) there have been many stories of young people running off to join travelling fairs, and 3) the reputation of travellers. So it seems like SH just mentioned the fair to draw attention away from himself and use the traveller's negative reputation to his own advantage. And when he kept talking about the funfair, it sounded like a realistic embellishment of his story to him, and so he kept repeating it.

True. I just don't think it's fair to conclude CS was complicit (at that point) because one of them didn't stay to wait for TS.

I so agree with you.

IMO, SH wanted to establish and maintain a continuous alibi for his whereabouts from the moment CS came home from work. He also needed time to think. What better way than to suggest to CS that Tia may be at the fair - a distance away from the house & shops?

SH is so obviously a user & deceiver - IMO he deceived CS. The longer they were away from the house the better chance he could say "Not me! It must have happened while we were driving around to the fair."

A con-man is always one step ahead of everyone else - they devote their lives to thinking up new schemes & strategies - SH didn't get to the ripe old age of 37 on his own merits, he used everyone along the way. Puke

No matter what CS wrote in her FB - she raised 2 children & I don't see anywhere that they turned out badly. I also think that if she had known Tia was in the loft, she would have killed him with her bare hands.

yes... will move to to the located forum (no worries if you are on the thread you won't even notice and there will be a redirect)

lets hope they find a cause as it may mean the difference between SH being locked up for the rest of his days or walking free from a court room.

I do not think SH will walk free.It will be the difference between a murder and a manslaughter charge.
It will also depend on what other evidence comes to light.

Something very much along those lines is what my instincts have been screeching at me since day one...

I had really hoped it would not be ,but sadly I think this will be the case and had been for some time.

Same here! When my Mum found out about Tia's story her initial reaction was something along the lines of 'I bet she's been abused for years, and not just by 'grandad'!' I'm inclined to agree with her!

Tia was at the age when she would be wanting to have boyfriends of her own age. She could have just told her mum that she did not want to go and stay with granny and SH anymore.

I also think if she had been abused by SH and possibly others that her mother must have known it was happening.

I've explained my theory. He was there looking for help. Only afterwards when he realised CCTV might be an issue did he make up the "asking around" bit. That's why nobody remembers. Because he didn't ask any questions.

If he really did go to the fair looking for help (I'm not persuaded that he did), don't you think that the fairground people would deny all knowledge of it?

Two things really freaked me from the beginning -- the fact that both mom and grandma dated this ugly wreck of a man AND when mom "disappeared' (said to me there was some element of guilt or not being able to handle the situation -- as if she were thinking OMG what have I done?)

She didn't "disappear". Almost certainly the family were moved somewhere to escape the attentions of the media and let them have a little peace. This would have been approved or even arranged by the police, and they would have had a Family Liaison Officer with them.

Gosh its hard to keep up with this thread, so apologies if this has been covered. The news today was that her PM had been delayed as her body was so badly decomposed and they needed to check dental records. I understand it wouldn't be in a greatly perserved state but i'm surprised it has decomposed so quickly...even in this mixture of warm/wet/warm/wet days. I still think they'll be more surprises in store yet to be revealed.

If tests are ongoing, then the situation is that the PM has not yet established the cause of death. Subtle but important difference.

I agree with you.By this stage ,through lack of cctv evidence it was clear she never went to Croydon so this was put forward as a possibly place she could have been abducted from.

What I cannt make my mind up about is whether this was a pre-rehearsed story. FRom the interview it gave me the impression that they had discussed this before hand and mentioned a couple of fairs and SH forgot which one they had decided upon so relied on DS for a prompt.
