That's good news for the UK, sounds like they have been vaccinating high-risk individuals for some time now and it is having a significant impact, along with behavioral changes among the high-risk population.

Here in the U.S., I've been reading that we have a shortage of the vaccine for monkeypox, and cases are still on the incline. I think the FDA and CDC have figured out a way to stretch the vaccines so that there is more to go around. I don't have the link, but read in the news recently (or maybe here?) that one vial of the vaccine right now can be used for 5 people instead of just for one person.
Having more vaccine available would surely help, along with behavioral changes.

''Monkeypox will be getting a new name, following a global consultation with experts, in a move designed to avoid discrimination and stigma attached to the current one, says the World Health Organization.

The preferred name for the viral disease going forward will be “mpox,” the organization said in a statement Monday. Both names will be used interchangeably for the next year, until the former is phased out.

“Considerations for the recommendations included rationale, scientific appropriateness, extent of current usage, pronounceability, usability in different languages, absence of geographical or zoological references, and the ease of retrieval of historical scientific information,” said the organization.''

''The renaming of disease is a relatively rare process — this one was accomplished through a fast-tracked series of consultations with WHO’s member states, the organization said.''

I always thought it was one of those things that would spring up somewhere, and then go away just as rapidly. It has in the past.

''ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Kenya and the Central African Republic have declared new outbreaks of mpox as Africa’s health officials race to contain the spread of the disease in a region lacking vaccines.
Nairobi announced the outbreak on Wednesday, after a case was detected in a passenger traveling from Uganda to Rwanda at a border crossing in southern Kenya. The Central African Republic was the first to declare a new outbreak on Monday, saying it extends to its capital of Bangui.''

''BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — African health officials said mpox cases have spiked by 160% in the last year, warning the risk of further spread is high given the lack of effective treatments or vaccines on the continent.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report released Wednesday that mpox, also known as monkeypox, has now been detected in 10 African countries this year. Burundi and Rwanda both reported the virus for the first time.''

''An analysis of patients hospitalized from October to January in eastern Congo suggested that recent genetic mutations in the virus were the result of ongoing spread in people.

Unlike in previous mpox outbreaks, where lesions were mostly seen on the chest, hands and feet, the new form of mpox causes milder symptoms and lesions mostly on the genitals, making it harder to spot.''

'LONDON (AP) — The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared this week that the increasing spread of mpox across the continent is a health emergency, warning the virus might ultimately spill across international borders.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization is convening its own expert meeting to consider making a similar emergency declaration over mpox. The U.N. health agency said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths this year, which already exceed last year’s figures.'
