That's good news for the UK, sounds like they have been vaccinating high-risk individuals for some time now and it is having a significant impact, along with behavioral changes among the high-risk population.

Here in the U.S., I've been reading that we have a shortage of the vaccine for monkeypox, and cases are still on the incline. I think the FDA and CDC have figured out a way to stretch the vaccines so that there is more to go around. I don't have the link, but read in the news recently (or maybe here?) that one vial of the vaccine right now can be used for 5 people instead of just for one person.
Having more vaccine available would surely help, along with behavioral changes.

''Monkeypox will be getting a new name, following a global consultation with experts, in a move designed to avoid discrimination and stigma attached to the current one, says the World Health Organization.

The preferred name for the viral disease going forward will be “mpox,” the organization said in a statement Monday. Both names will be used interchangeably for the next year, until the former is phased out.

“Considerations for the recommendations included rationale, scientific appropriateness, extent of current usage, pronounceability, usability in different languages, absence of geographical or zoological references, and the ease of retrieval of historical scientific information,” said the organization.''

''The renaming of disease is a relatively rare process — this one was accomplished through a fast-tracked series of consultations with WHO’s member states, the organization said.''

I always thought it was one of those things that would spring up somewhere, and then go away just as rapidly. It has in the past.

''ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Kenya and the Central African Republic have declared new outbreaks of mpox as Africa’s health officials race to contain the spread of the disease in a region lacking vaccines.
Nairobi announced the outbreak on Wednesday, after a case was detected in a passenger traveling from Uganda to Rwanda at a border crossing in southern Kenya. The Central African Republic was the first to declare a new outbreak on Monday, saying it extends to its capital of Bangui.''

''BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — African health officials said mpox cases have spiked by 160% in the last year, warning the risk of further spread is high given the lack of effective treatments or vaccines on the continent.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a report released Wednesday that mpox, also known as monkeypox, has now been detected in 10 African countries this year. Burundi and Rwanda both reported the virus for the first time.''

''An analysis of patients hospitalized from October to January in eastern Congo suggested that recent genetic mutations in the virus were the result of ongoing spread in people.

Unlike in previous mpox outbreaks, where lesions were mostly seen on the chest, hands and feet, the new form of mpox causes milder symptoms and lesions mostly on the genitals, making it harder to spot.''

'LONDON (AP) — The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared this week that the increasing spread of mpox across the continent is a health emergency, warning the virus might ultimately spill across international borders.
On Wednesday, the World Health Organization is convening its own expert meeting to consider making a similar emergency declaration over mpox. The U.N. health agency said there have been more than 14,000 cases and 524 deaths this year, which already exceed last year’s figures.'

''In Toronto, confirmed cases of mpox increased after summer festivals and events in June and July, according to Toronto Public Health (TPH). In a news release on Tuesday, the city urged eligible residents to get vaccinated.
There have been a total of 93 confirmed cases as of July 31, compared to 21 the same time last year. The downtown core had a higher concentration of cases, the city said, although cases were reported across the city.''

Apologies for serial posting, but this is important, imo.

''A new deadly strain of mpox will likely reach the UK and could soon lead to British deaths, infectious disease experts have warned.

Other experts told MailOnline this more aggressive version of the virus may have already begun to spread silently beyond Africa, potentially reaching Europe.''
''The strain currently striking alarm among health experts is a new version of the far more dangerous clade I variant, called clade Ib, and kills about one in 20 adults it infects, rising to up to one in 10 children.
Infections have also been linked to an alarming rise in miscarriages among pregnant women. ''

A new deadly strain of mpox has officially reached Europe, health officials have reported.

Sweden's public health agency has recorded what it says is the first case of a ultra-deadly and more contagious variant of mpox — called clade 1 — outside of Africa.

It comes as infectious disease warn that this type of the infection will likely reach the UK and could soon lead to British deaths.

From the Publi Health Agency of Sweden:

The person infected had been visiting a country in Africa where there were a major outbreak of mpox clade I.

'Toronto is reporting a "spike" in mpox cases and health officials are urging eligible residents to get vaccinated to contain the spread.

In a news release issued Tuesday, Toronto Public Health said it has seen 93 confirmed cases as of July 31. This time last year, the city's case count stood at 21.
The latest numbers indicate that there were 13 new cases confirmed in Toronto over the last two weeks of July.''

This article discusses the possibility of mpox becoming classified as a pandemic. Clade 1 mpox has a 3-4% fatality rate and is transmissible through sharing utensils and physical contact.

It is unfair, but I think the fatality rate in a country with a decent medical system would be very low. I hope more and better resources are being sent by many countries to the areas with these outbreaks.

Mpox seems to be getting a lot of attention. Just what we needed - another major global health crisis :(

LONDON – The World Health Organization has declared the ongoing outbreaks of mpox in Congo and elsewhere in Africa to be a global emergency, requiring urgent action to curb the virus' transmission.

Sweden has since announced it had found the first case of a new form of mpox previously only seen in Africa in a traveler, while other European health authorities warned more imported cases were likely.

Here's a look at mpox and how likely it is to spread further...
