That article is from 2009. I don't see any relevance to this. Is this detainee that they punched in the gut the informant from Gitmo that kinda got this ball rolling?

I looked it up.

all three not guilty:

Just posting in case anyone read that and was curious as to the outcome. The trials were in 2010.

I am struggling with this. I appreciate everyone's position here, but I am not elated or rejoicing. We were appalled at images of people celebrating 9/11 in the Middle East, and yet we are doing the same. It makes me sad.

So will the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq come to a close then?

I see no comparison. The celebration of the slaughter of innocents is vastly different (for me) from the completion of a successful military mission.

AH, okay, Sorry, I try to NEVER forget to date check, but the article was emailed to me by someone that is usually very reliable. I am so sorry. If it hadn't been quoted so many times, I'd delete, but instead, I'll just go back and edit the original post.

I'll even beat myself with a trout and spare everyone the arm strain, LOL.

I agree there. The downside to this, which is bound to sink in rather quickly, is that even though we killed the number 1 guy, it just means the number 2 guy got an unscheduled promotion.

Hey, you got to start somewhere.

Sorry if this has already been posted; http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/02/obama-to-make-statment-tonight-subject-unknown/?hpt=T1&iref=BN1

...Bin Laden and his family lived on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the 3-story building, and those floors were cleared last, the official said. The official says one of bin Laden’s own wives identified his body to U.S. forces, after the team made visual identification themselves.

U.S. forces also recovered what a senior Intelligence official is calling “quite a bit of material.”

“There’s a robust collection of materials we need to sift through, and we hope to find valuable intelligence that will lead us to other players in al Qaeda," a senior intelligence official said.

The official added a Task Force has been set up “because of the sheer volume of material collected. That material is currently being exploited and analyzed.”...

Well, that should be helpful! :thumb:

Yeah, but we aren't wildly celebrating the death of thousands of innocent civilians. They were. That's the difference.

Respectfully snipped-the body count may be different, but imo the sentiment is the same.

While the terrorists still exist and the threat is still very real, as stated upthread, the head of the snake has been severed. In this time of economic and political turmoil, this country needed something to agree on, to bring us back together.

After the twin towers and that infamous day, we, as citizens felt a fear and an anger that united us as no other event in my lifetime. No matter our differences, as Americans, we were all united by shock, grief, anger and fear.

Today, we are all united in a sense of relief, pride, justice and yes, an odd form of celebration. Celebration that it can be done. Terrorists, even big fish such as OBL, can be run to ground and stopped. For nearly ten years now that has seemed an impossibility, an insurmountable task. Now we see, and the terrorists see, it can be done, and it will be done.

Bless our military, Bless the seals involved and bless every single person in intelligence gathering who worked tirelessly for months, nay years, to this end. Bless those who because of the secretive nature of covert operations will never be thanked but whose work, putting themselves in danger on a regular basis, has gotten us this result.

Sentiment: a complex combination of feelings and opinion. (Webster's)

Celebrating the deaths of thousands of innocents certainly does conjour up feelings and opinions. Although I don't think anyone's opinion would be to celebrate those deaths.

The death of this hate filled terrorist will conjour up even more feelings and opinions. And I do believe that most of those opinions will be to rejoice that this hate filled mass murderer is dead.

Well said, thanks.

I can take no joy in any man's death for death's sake. But I can take comfort in the fact that this particular elusive murdered and seller of hate is no longer a threat to me or mine. I can be overjoyed that those who spread their message of hate through acts of terrorism now know that they can and will be hunted down and stopped, despite the underground nature of their activities which makes them so difficult to be held accountable for their acts of cowardice.

You are totally welcome to your thoughts and opinions, and know that I respect you for them.

For me, there is a giant difference.

We are at war. It has been declared, we had a clear and known target, the other side knew we were at war, and it was a military action in a war zone against a military target, using military forces to achieve the end.

When 9/11 occurred, we were not at war, no war had been delcared, civilians were the target, and it was not a military action against us by another country's armed forces.

The ones who were killed last night knew they were targets. The ones who were killed on 9/11 were going to work, or on vacation, or traveling to see folks. The victims of 9/11 had NO idea they would be targets, would die a terrifying, horrific death. Destruction was widespread, traumatic to an entire nation, and shocking.

OBL indeed knew he was a target, that everyone around him was a target, and his life was on the line each and every day. He may have been many things, but he was not surprised by his death...he knew it was coming.

Our "celebration" of OBL's death may seem to be a terrible thing. But our relief that we indeed did what we said, that the (at least titular) head of AQ has been taken out...to me, is very, very different than the celebrations of those folks when the towers fell, and the planes crashed, killing thousands of folks who were just going about their business on a gorgeous Tuesday in September. We are not cheering an attack on innocents. We are not celebrating the death of thousands.

We are cheering our military in a job well done. We are celebrating in a sense of relief and thanksgiving that we were able to bring down this "man", keep the casualties to a minimum, and that we no longer have this "boogy man" to deal with.

There will be more attacks; OBL has, be assured, made plans for a transition of power. But we have shown that we do what we say, no matter how long it takes; we do it honestly, not using commercial airlines and financial towers to acheive our goals; and we do it with care, not killing children and people who have nothing to do with the military.

As I said, I hold it differently than you. I did not, and will not, run around in celebration. But I certainly understand those who are...and it's a far cry from what happened on 9/11.

Best-

I agree! My nephew was working in the Pentagon on 9/11. His office was very close to where the plane hit. Thankfully, he escaped alive. Unfortunately, thousands of others lost their lives that day. The man responsible for 9/11 is now dead....not by natural causes, but from retaliation by the USA for his crime on us. I am happy today and very much enjoyed seeing people gathering in peace last night waving the American flag.

I see no reason at all to be sad that such an evil person has been killed. He earned it.

I just found the Bin Laden compound on Google Earth using the satellite image currently posted on CNN.com's main page.

It is located at 34o 10' 09.64'' N / 73o 14' 13.17" E
