There is no danger to the community?? How so?

Maybe I’m taking it too literally, but LE’s statement seemed to dismiss the possibility that there is a danger to the local community, not the community-at-large.

Per ABC4 (snipped & BBM)—
“At this time the Grand County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an ongoing homicide investigation” adding “The Grand County Sheriff’s Office believes there is no current danger to the public in the Grand County area

So they had a camper van but liked tent camping without their van? Just trying to get a feel for the situation. I know a lot of people doing the van life thing who consider that to be their home and would not call themselves homeless. They just say they live in their camper van. But perhaps for these women it was not so much a choice to live in their van but out of necessity?

I’m curious if anyone else was near them and also noticed this creepy man (for description purposes, not saying I question their story). With the way camping works and people moving on frequently after just a night or so, I worry people who were nearby were long gone by the time police were on scene and realized there was a homicide.

If it is the Warner lake campground then it does seem to have a website where you can reserve campsites ( if it was where they were camping)

Manti-La Sal National Forest - Warner Lake Campground

If they were found “a few miles” from Warner Lake then it wasn’t the campground there. I’ve camped at that campground before and it is right next to the lake.

Also for what it’s worth the campsites there are very close together and I am confident they would have been found sooner if that’s where they were.

There are a number of dispersed camping sites on the road leading up there, that would be my guess as to where they were.

It’s my feeling they were “camping” where the would not have to pay. <modsnip>

The three options that make the most sense, in my opinion are:

1. Since the campsite was perhaps fairly secluded, it could have been just a random deranged person happening by and discovered their campsite.
2. Someone from the bar/tavern/eating establishment they were last seen at followed them to their campsite.
3. The person they were frightened of.

To just walk into someones campsite and gun down unarmed people is beyond comprehension. I hope the police are gaining ground in finding this scary person

If it was one of the dispersed campsites high up on the mountain, those are visible from the road but otherwise very secluded.

I think most or all of the land at the base of the mountain near the road is private property so you wouldn’t be allowed to camp there. You probably could do it and not be at great risk of being discovered, but in that event they would likely not be visible from the road and even more secluded.

I doubt a random deranged person would be involved high up on the mountain. At the base of it, possibly. But in either case (especially high up) this person would need to have a vehicle, and probably had one with a higher ground clearance than a sedan.

It’s honestly hard to even guess what the scenario was without knowing the location of the campsite (at the base vs high up the mountain), to me it makes a HUGE difference.

Perhaps the police statement is linked to Yuletide's possibility number 2. For example, perhaps the police feet that the attack was personal.

The attacker knows the general area where they camp- then follows them to learn the exact location and attacks them.

As the attack was motivated by a personal grudge, there would not be a danger to the general community- unless another persons angers the assailant.

Crystal looks short in stature next to Kylen, appears petite. In the pictures Kylen looks loving and protective of her. Did Crystal have health issues?
Did someone try to hurt Crystal at the tavern and Kylen stepped in, angering a person to confront them later at the campsite?

I’m not at all familiar with the area. Could they have witnessed nefarious activity ? Just not sure the likelihood of that. The press is quiet

I need to qualify this by saying I am not that familiar with the area to have a good idea of how much nefarious activity goes on or where it typically takes place.

But that being said, yes, I do think that is a possibility, particularly if they were trying to find an incognito campsite at the base of the mountain. Much less likely higher up, but not totally out of the question.

One thing I’m not sure of is whether they had an actual campsite set up when they were found. If they did, it would suggest they did not happen upon something nefarious (because they would have already been situated at the location when they were shot), but I have no clue whether they did or not.

I'm trying to nail down the location of the campsite, and I think I have a pretty good idea.

Unfortunately I don't know how to make maps, but if anyone's curious, go to google maps and look up Webb Hollow Creek Utah. I believe it's right around there, most likely just north of there.

I had initially thought it was a couple miles southeast of there in one of two other locations, but I am now almost certain that was wrong (although my location now could potentially be wrong too, just to be clear).

I bring this up for a couple reasons:

1. This is capital-R remote, and definitely not somewhere it would be likely for someone to locate them by chance, or to find them if specifically looking for them. Even though it's only a few miles away as the crow flies, it's like a 45min drive from Moab.

2. I have not been to this exact location, but based on topo maps it seems to be somewhat less rugged and in some ways more accessible than where I initially thought they were.

I still don't know what it all means, just food for thought.

Footage Shows Last Time Slain Camping Couple Seen Alive

Strictly MOO but I suspect this will turn out to have been a crime motivated by homophobia or misogyny. It brings to my mind similar cases which have ended in the senseless murder of female same-sex couples who are enjoying the outdoors by hiking or camping, have the misfortune to cross paths with a hateful rando who takes offense to their perceived sexual orientation, and are killed or injured as a result of said rando’s uncontrollable rage. The two cases I’m referring to have been well-documented and you can read much more on them if you Google the victims’ names: Julianne Williams and Lollie Winans in 1996, and Rebecca Wight and Claudia Brenner in 1988.

As if this wasn't horrendous enough, the poor Schulte family has already had their fair share of loss. :(
Schulte’s dad had already lost his son, Mackeon Daniel Schulte, who was “shot and killed by a friend in 2015 at the age of 15,” according to a G*F*ndMe page.

“We want Kylen to lay to rest with her brother Mackeon Daniel Schulte,” the siblings’ aunt, Bridget Calvert, wrote on the fundraiser as her brother “prepares to bury a second child” and bring his dead daughter home to Billings.

At this point I’m leaning toward the creeper being responsible, but that could very well have been his motivation. I don’t really have a strong opinion on motive here, but that’s plausible for sure.

In any case, I’m really glad you linked that article because it seems to confirm both the approximate location of the campsite, and that Kylen and Crystal did in fact have some degree of camp setup there prior to the murders, which are both things I’d been wondering about.

That's my thinking as well. Claudia (survived & write a book) said they had two brief encounters (cigarette and checking a map, I believe) with Stephen Carr before he shot them. Carr was living in a cave in that area and unsuccessfully attempted to argue that the women were taunting him by having sex. Murder of Rebecca Wight - Wikipedia

*Sheriff Masters Issues "Cautionary Warning"
Update: the individual's name and mugshot are intentionally not included to avoid pre-trial publicity as per agreed upon protocols with the DAs office to minimize the risk that charges are dropped. You may file a freedom of information request through the Sheriff's Office if you wish to obtain either or both.
Sheriff Masters wants the citizens and visitors to our county to know of an armed man who has been illegally camping in the Telluride area. The individual has been arrested three times in the Norwood and Telluride areas since July 1st for charges including weapons offenses, burglary of a local laundromat, possession of meth, trespassing, and theft. The judge has repeatedly released this man from jail on PR bonds over the objections of the District Attorney's office. Today (Monday 8/23) more than three dozen weapons were found around his campsite in the Mill Creek area of Telluride including knives, hatchets, and a cross-bow and several swords, just yards off a popular hiking trail. The campsite had been illegally constructed on private property. “In light of the past week's double homicide of campers outside Moab, l want to caution people to be aware of their surroundings," Sheriff Masters said.

This case is reminding of still missing, presumed deceased, Ian Eckles. He was meeting friends to turkey hunt in WA and was sleeping in his vehicle when they believe someone tried to break and steal from him not realizing he was sleeping. A random chance encounter. The suspect was living in the woods and is believed to have murdered 2 or 3 other people. IMO
