Kinda upsets me, AZ and her attorneys are not allowed to speak publicly. Ellensin can continues his spin, frequently not matching accurate facts.. Moo

He said the child is a victim of the decisions made the day of the shooting. Ellenson added we could potentially learn more about the special grand jury's decision soon.
"It is my understanding that the special grand jury is still investigating the assistant principal and I've heard those indictments will come at some point this summer," Ellenson said.

IMO, Ellenson is deflecting. But, Deja still has to face the charges..as well as the school admins.
Abby's attorneys are wise to remain silent at this time, IMO.

All of my sympathy in this case is with the teacher. All of it.
She was the only one who was doing her job that day. In hindsight she probably should have walked the boy to the office and said his monitor wasn’t there so he can sit with them until one arrives. But she didn’t, she tried to do her job.
The parents didn’t do their job. Someone was supposed to be with that child at school.
The school administrator didn’t do her job and the school and school district haven’t done theirs for years chasing federal dollars.
The ultimate responsibility falls on the Federal government who refuses to see the difference in the educational needs of average children and children with violent emotional disabilities and insists, mandates, that these children be put in regular classrooms endangering everyone in those classrooms. The Feds dangle money to school districts to ensure it happens.
I hope the teacher gets the $40 million. I hope she sues the federal government. I hope she owns the school district when it’s over. She was left on an island that day with no support nor the training to deal with that type of student. And no one cared…they were just happy they weren’t having to deal with him.

I think it is interesting that AZ didn't take the Worker's Compensation check. That was smart. Being shot should not be considered part of the job for teaching school.

The fact that so many layers, meant to keep school a safe place for learning were completely disregarded in this case makes it important to take a stand and make sure to be heard. Teachers have a right to teach in a violence free work environment.

Or, go back to "Covid Era" teaching, where the teacher is at home, on a computer, and kids learn via Zoom. Is that the only way to be safe?

I don't know how teachers are going to be safe when no one seems to do anything about the dangers (that are worsening) :(

Fyi, Just want to correct a misconception that is being referenced in multiple posts this week. The need for a family member to be present with the 1st grader was ended the week before the shooting, by the school officials. "According to the boy's family, the school informed Taylor she and other family members were no longer required to be present in the classroom, a request they made in the fall due to the boy's behavior challenges." Source: This is according to D.Taylor's comments, and her lawyers comments. Family members indicated his behavior had improved and he was meeting goals. As far as they are concerned, they didn't come to school with him because they were no longer required to. And admin allowed him into class because he was allowed to go without accompaniment. Mother of 6-year-old who shot Virginia teacher says son has ADHD

As an educator, I believe the dropping of that requirement may have been done in error. School officials may not have calculated correctly or misjudged how much a family member's presence played a role in his improvement. He went from having an adult at his side, able to ask questions, etc., constantly, to being one of the students sharing the teacher's attention. Perhaps a phasing out of the adult support would have allowed him to adjust over time...

I don't believe that she should be sentenced to prison. Her son has enough problems. I would wish for some sort of diversion program, with intensive case management, and therapy sessions with the child. She needs parenting skills courses, mandatory drug testing, and obviously, help for her son. Prison won't solve anything here.
I'm going to respectfully disagree. Among other things, she's the worst influence her son can have (that we know of so far).

Wow. He clearly needed far more supervision than he was getting. The schools officials did bad by the student, and teacher as they ignored all the warnings, bells, and whistles, and not searching properly,if they had the weapon wolf not have been missed. The parents too for not keeping the weapon locked up,and out of reach of their six year old child who they are responsible for. Time to place accountability where it belongs. I feel bad for the child.Only six years old,and now he has this on his too small shoulders. I feel bad for the teacher who was doing her job. The rest sorry I can't summon any pity,or render any free passes for them. MOO

I have had ADHD since I was 5 years old and I didn't shoot, maim, kill, or even so much as PINCH a soul... ADHD is not a reason or excuse for hurting someone. So many of us have ADHD and don't hurt anybody at all. Wtf?

Georgia, I agree that they handled this incorrectly. I am unsure what should have been done, but a strict boarding school or alternative school maybe would have been the best bet.

Am I a bad person for thinking that some people really do need to be locked up and the key thrown away, even when they're that young?

Prison would keep her from bringing any more children into the world for her to expose to drugs, guns, and violence.

After following True Crime for a few decades, no, some people seem to be in trouble.
After watching We Need to Talk About Kevin, it makes me think about how many children are psychopaths and cannot be cured. How many can? Someone would have to devote their life to making sure this kid gets back on track and doesn't resort to violence, but who? Is the mom up to the task? and how can he if his violent father still has visitation rights? Maybe the Grandfather has the time and energy to devote to him. There's no easy answer to this.

Zwerner’s attorneys requested a large number of records about school staff, students, and discipline through discovery; however, they say the school board has only returned a limited amount of information to them, arguing that other records they’ve requested are sensitive or irrelevant to the case.

In a motion, the school board told a judge it will release certain records to Zwerner’s attorneys if a protective order is approved, which would keep those records confidential from the public.

“That is not normal procedure in Virginia nor is it appropriate in this case.” Kevin Biniazan, a member of Zwerner’s legal team, said. “The school board is a public body so its plea for blanket confidentiality should have us all concerned.”

Kinda makes you wonder if other nefarious activities were taking place since the school admin is afraid of transparency!
It doesn't make me wonder, it confirms it for me.
When folks are trying to hide things, it's usually a given they've got shady, sketchy stuff they want to stay hidden.
