I've been to Alley Katz quite a few times and the Canal Club 1-2 times (used to manage a band)... let me just say, you wouldn't find me walking or riding a bike around those areas *without* a group of big tough guys.. My sister inlaw and I tried counting the bullet holes in the buildings on one side of a road in that area and we lost count..

I had always heard that Shockoe Slip wasn't the safest place to be... But isn't this supposed to be one of the most historic places in Richmond?

Belongings of Missing Student Found

Police recovered items belonging to a missing Virginia Commonwealth University exchange student yesterday near a popular fishing spot on the north bank of the James River in Richmond.

Authorities searched the river using search-and-rescue boats, but after several hours they had not found Jonathan S. Dorey, who disappeared more than three weeks ago.

VCU Police Chief John Venuti said a passer-by alerted authorities about 1 p.m. after finding the belongings. They were in a hollow area under a large concrete pad beside the river near Rocketts Landing east of Shockoe Bottom.

VCU officials declined to identify the belongings. A source at the scene said that police recovered a backpack and some clothing there. A report on a Richmond Web site that shows traffic crashes and hazards stated at one point that the missing student's backpack had been found.

University police have said previously that Dorey was carrying a navy-blue Eastpak backpack when he disappeared March 2.

My bet is on a simple robbery for the bike. If they find the bike, they will find the perps. Richmond definitely has a lot of bad neighborhoods; it is a city where you have to know where you are and avoid certain areas.

I wanted to post an update as I just saw this on Richmond's NBC 12 site:

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – Rescue crews are on scene in south Richmond working to recover, what authorities say, is a corpse from the James River.
The body was discovered around 12:00 Sunday afternoon on Brander St. near the I-95 bridge.
Early reports indicate that water rescue crews were already in the area searching for missing VCU student Jonathan Dorey when they came across the body.
However police say there is no immediate indication that the corpse found this afternoon is Dorey.
We've a crew on the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.
<end>

Please pray for the Dorey family

How utterly heartbreaking. Maybe this young man did not know exactly how unsafe that area is...so many tragedies of late involving young people with their whole lives in front of them -- gone, in the blink of an eye --

It's not him. It's another missing gentleman, sadly.

It does make me wonder if he could have stashed his own belongings because he wanted to wade or swim and explore the river, then got swept off his feet. I would think that a robber would have taken the backpack, as well as the bike. Then again, I don't know if he would have left his bike in order to wade. That's probably the kind of decision only his family would know as likely or not.

Per my earlier post - the body recovered was Ferdinand Nathaniel and again LE says no foul play is suspected.
The search for Jonathan continues.

Thank you summer_breeze!

This is just so odd -- they found Jon's backback and *clothes* near the water?? It makes you start to wonder about other things, such as, was he doing drugs, was he struggling with any psychiatric problems, etc.
