Adding to the confusion are the comments from the Sheriff in this People article, which seem to imply that they think she took off? I hadn't seen that in any of the prior reporting...

I wish we knew whether she was really spotted in the surveillance footage from the mall... Given that that would seem to be a huge development just to be casually dropped into one article, I'm assuming it was a mistake. This article has Pearce saying that she had not been spotted in the footage as of yesterday afternoon:
