This reminded me of a story. I had a friend who'd lived in the U.S. for quite a while and spoke excellent English with only a trace of an accent.

He was once watching a tv show and the cop told the bad guy, "You have the right to counsel." He wanted to know if it was really true that when you're arrested you can ask to speak with a therapist.

My late stepfather, who was a Cook Islander who spoke English his whole life (though it wasn't his first language) used to use gender pronouns interchangeably. Especially with pets. Other things, he'd mix up, too. My mum's best friend who is Aboriginal was removed from her parents and institutionalised at a very young age due to governmental policies of cultural genocide and has the same quirks of language, even though the institution punished speaking anything else but English. Her first language was Kriol, and always will be.

Equal access in the court systems and other areas cannot be understated as to its importance. Just because you can order a coffee and chat with your colleagues does not mean you understand the quirks of jargon specific to legal settings.

UPDATE: Police chief says 'nothing of evidentiary value' located during Thursday's searches in the Mamta Bhatt case

Police conducted several searches on Thursday based on new evidence in the Mamta Kafle Bhatt case.

The Manassas Park police chief said Thursday’s searches across the city in the Mamta Kafle Bhatt case “resulted in nothing of evidentiary value being located.”

“The Manassas Park Police Department would like to thank the community for being patient and allowing our officers to conduct these searches,” Chief Mario Lugo said in a two-sentence update around 4:20 p.m.

“We have multiple agencies, multiple witnesses who are out of the state — out of the country — that we have to prepare for,” Sweet said in court.

Chief Public Defender Tracey Lenox argued that Bhatt was still entitled to a speedy trial, despite prosecutors’ wish for more time, adding that his defense couldn’t control whether the arrest was premature.

“They chose to charge in this,” Lenox said, adding: “I understand the inconvenience to the Commonwealth, but this is where we are.”

It's about equal access for all to participate in their defense. Court language is complicated and completely different to conversational English. Nobody should be at a disadvantage in a courtroom because of their ESL status or sensory disability.

I am trying to catch up on this case, I'm a few pages behind ( busy day) I just want to say my heart goes out to the searchers. GOD LOVE THEM! Also, having an interpreter is so important so that there is no misunderstanding or reason to say he isn't being treated fairly or didn't know what was being said. IMO. I'm back to reading. Great job everyone for all for the info.

I can’t imagine he did that. We haven’t heard of anything being found in a fireplace or anything, and burning in an area like that would risk discovery.

Not fireplace. If the season is hazardous for fires outside, which is probably the case in MD/VA, then NB might really hack into pieces, sorry to say.

Husband of missing Manassas Park mom due back in court this week

As police continue investigating the disappearance of Manassas Park mother Mamta Kafle Bhatt, her husband's public defender is seeking a speedy trial.

It’s clear that Naresh Bhatt, who has been charged with concealing a dead body in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, wants to go to trial as soon as possible. On Friday, he filed a motion saying prosecutors can't prove he's guilty.

Lol, I just find this so funny.

Regardless of who she was with or where she went, she was with Naresh after that event (for up to a few days).

His bedroom was a bloody mess. The bathroom was a bloody mess. There were bloody drag marks between the two. He bought knives and cleaning supplies. He lied about where she was. He had her cell phone after he claimed she destroyed it. He googled the death of his wife, was liquidating assets and preparing to flee.

Etc etc etc.

I’d like to know the identity of the driver because it could factor into motive, but this defense idea that it could absolve him of murder is hilarious.

The motion makes no logical argument, and is very poorly written.

Is he seriously trying to pull a ‘Gone Girl’ scenario here and imply that Mamta is still out there and ran away? At least in the Barry Morphew case, her body hadn’t been found either, but there wasn’t a preponderance of LOTS OF BLOOD IN THE HOUSE!

I truly hope they find Mamta soon, but there’s no statute of limitations on murder.

The Manassas Park Police Department continues to receive tips and leads on the Mamata Kafle investigation. We recently had an individual come forward with information that was helpful in the case. The Police Department is requesting anyone who had contact with or spoke to Naresh Bhatt between July 28th, 2024 – August 5th, 2024, to please contact the Manassas Park Police Department, 703-361-1136. We are seeking individuals that have not been interviewed or contacted by Detectives already.
