The vigil took place hours after Manassas Park Police Chief Mario Lugo held a closed-door meeting with community members and Mamta Kafle Bhatt's friends, informing them of the arrest and saying she is presumed dead.

Friends say they also will start an effort to empower those suffering domestic violence.

“Better that you live happily than you die like this one day,” friend Bina Khatkalama said. “You know … we do not want anymore Mamta.”

They have planned an event Saturday at Signal Hill Park to remember Mamta Kafle Bhatt.

WUSA9 asked Mayor Jeanette Rishell why the media wasn't allowed inside. She responded "You would have to ask our chief.' He did not respond Thursday.

"He talked about the body has not been found so still searching but their forensics and stuff, working on it and the investigation is still open," said Prabha Bhattarai Duja, who was at the meeting.

I've been thinking of the little one. She is an American citizen and I don't think it will be easy for family in another country to gain custody, but that is my guess, not based on experience or knowledge.

That, and her mother moved here, as many of us, looking for a better life for herself and her future children. The mother worked hard as a nurse. "For her American dream", one might say. Her baby was born here. I hope there is a chance to collect for a fund for her and maybe the community will help raising the daughter. JMO.

I noticed, a female LE Officer escorted him out. How appropriate.

It might be a good approach. He resembles me of Patrick Frazee; obstinate to the extreme. I sincerely wish LE to find Mamta, because as I remember, Frazee kept silent. JMO - a soft-spoken woman, like the one that worked with Chris Watts, could work well with Bhatt or anyone whose behavior is geared by his perceived need to protect his right to control, be it people or circumstances. JMO.

It lists 7/30/2024 as the offense date. So does LE have evidence indicating the date of death or are they basing that on Naresh Bhatt saying that is when he last saw her?
He claimed to have seen her the following day, so it can’t be based on when he last said he saw her; they wouldn’t take his word for anything.

Offense dates can be weird, and sometimes they don’t line up for one reason or another. If it’s accurate though, then I think they have evidence that he killed her on that day, or that he moved her on that day.

Do we know which day he was seen buying cleaning supplies?

The problem with the baby staying in the US, in a foster family/being adopted, would mean that she would eventually loose all connections to her mother's (and father's) family, and the contact with her extended family living in Nepal. Even if it would be a friend of her mother in the US who would take care of the child, they would only have known MKB for three years, and most likely have little knowledge of the first 25 years of her life, and of her family in Nepal. Regardless how many promises are made now to keep the contact, will it be true 10 - 15 years from now? MKB's family have lost their daughter/sister, do they also have to loose their granddaughter/niece too? The child has Nepali citizenship by descent, not just only US citizenship.

It seems unlikely, though, that her father will have any parental rights terminated until he's convicted because he's currently innocent until proven guilty. So for now, it's unlikely they'll allow the child to leave the country. For a child this young, to be taken from mom and then to be taken again from whomever is caring for them for the next year, two years, however long a conviction might take, that could be very traumatic. I would hope that if it's decided the child will be cared for by one of the friends here in the US, that they'd be committed to Mamta's memory and ensure that the child maintains relationships with her family.

The court documents state that a substantial amount of digital and forensic evidence was recovered from the home, indicating that Mamta’s body was inside the residence and likely dragged out. The documents also suggest the murder occurred on July 30.

Mamta, mother to an 11-month-old baby, was last seen on July 27 at the UVA Health Prince William Medical Center. Her last known communication was on July 28 when she spoke with a friend.

Bhatt allegedly told police that the last time he saw his wife was on July 31. Following his arrest, police revised their timeline to say she was last seen four days earlier.

They must have blood streaks that showed up with luminol to say she was “dragged.”
