The article in todays virginian pilot about NCIS raiding a cigar shoppe on Shore Dr, VA Bch. (Ali's Cigar Shoppe) That's near Oceana isn't it. Any ties to any of the cases you think?

Closer to the NAB Little Creek further up shore drive, if memory serves me it's about 10 miles from either Oceana gate - maybe a bit less now that there's been so many roads updated in Virginia Beach.

There's alot of bases here in close proximity to one another. You could take a few hours and drive gate to gate to probably 5 of them if you were so inclined. None are really far away from each other.

I wonder why her parents had their little girl cremated? Seems odd...

Why would you think it odd? There could be a lot of reasons for cremation. One, that they didn't own a plot to bury her (and they are expensive). I don't know but maybe cremation is less expensive and maybe it's just their choice.

I know that I would rather be cremated and talking with my kids they have said the same thing.

(I hope that didn't come across as rude. I was just wondering why it would be odd).

Cremation is substantially cheaper then the expense involved in burrying a person. Also, consider at her age I doubt her parents had purchased a burial plot for her.

Odd was a bad choice of words on my part. Sorry about that!

And trust me, I know how much cheaper it is ... I just had to pay for my sister's burial and she had no life insurance. She was cremated, and according to her boyfriend wanted to be. It was $6,000+ less than getting a casket, not even including the plot and funeral expenses. It is still expensive either way, but yes, much cheaper for cremation.

Some religions frown upon cremation, too. That can add stress to the family, unfortunately.

I just rarely hear of children being cremated.
But it could just be that I don't read enough to know. Luckily I've never had a child die within my family while I was alive. My oldest sister was stillborn and my parents had a little coffin and grave for her. It's very sad to see baby graves and tiny headstones. :(

I sure hope they find out who did this. The poor little girl didn't deserve to die much less be brutally murdered :(

I also felt sad or something when i heard she was cremated I had never heard of a child being cremated. I had always said i wanted to be cremated but had never asked my children so I had a discussion w/my daughter about it and she said that she wants to be cremated. But in the case of murder for some reason i didn't think they would allow cremation just in case they need more evidence from the body.

Cremation??????

Absolutely for me !!!!!!

What do you know about embalming? Google it. In my opinion it is a horrible process to put a body through to "preserve" it. What a joke; further degradation occurs sometimes beginning very soon after burial. I would prefer being immediately reduced to ashes. Actually there are chunkies after a body is cremated and the remains are then ground to become a more uniform oatmeal-like consistency... the better to return to the earth. Instead of being in a box 6 feet down in a cemetery, you can be in your favorite happy place. By the way, there has been a bit of fuss lately about ashes strewn at "the happiest place on earth".... y'know the mouse house in Florida?

Funeral traditions are cultural and regional and the business has a powerful lobby. We have given them power because it's something we don't want to think much about.... let the funeral home do whatever it is they do and just send me the bill. It certainly behooves the funeral director to favor embalming.

Two newer things that make more sense to me: #1 Green Burial- no embalming, no vault, no coffin. No dangerous chemicals to leach into the water supply. The body is buried and natural processes do what happens in nature. Who knows better than Mother Nature? #2 Having the cremains made into diamonds. No kidding, look it up. Carbon is what's left and there are companies who compress that into gem quality stones - usually comes out yellow. The old worn out body can stick around as a beautiful canary diamond ... "Yep. That's dear old Grandma looped on my eyebrow."

I mean no disrespect by treating this subject lightly. But, I encourage everyone to make an informed choice for your own remains. Then make your wishes known to whomever will be responsible in carrying out your plan. And be sure you know the wishes of those for whom you'll be overseeing final plans. I was happy when it was up to me, I knew what I did was exactly what my Dearly Departed wanted.

Maybe we need further discussion in the jury room. "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust"

Due to the homicide classification, based on her exam at autopsy and peripheral evidence, you can assume they have preserved (not wanting to be graphic lest there is a fam member reading) appropriate bio samples. If they did not feel that was going to be possible they would not have released the body.

bumping up

26 days ... no arrest yet

Ports. Police Dept is losing it's chief. I hope this does not impact the case of Meghan and it get lost in the transition.

I understand PPD is the lowest paid LE in this area, but I hope the goal is still the same...solving this mystery.

Just thought you'd like to know.

PS. what is "bumping?"

Good morning.

From what I understand it might be a good thing that the Police Chief is resigning. I wouldn't think it would have any bearing on the investigation into Meghan's murder. At least I hope not.

"Bumping" -when a case that is important to you goes without a post it moves further and further down the page, or even to the second page. You want to keep it on the front page where people can see it. If you don't have anything new to report you just post the word "bump" or "bumping" to get it back up there where people can see it. It doesn't necessarily have to be the word "bump".

Tonight local news channel ran a story on Meghan, they still have no answers on who killed her the police know how she died but are not giving details. They have interviewed over 60 people that Meghan knew, they interviewed a older man that is in the navy and Meghan's highschool boyfriend. Her family are not staying in the house. ---Nothing new about the case that we didn't already know--

Another thing that's unsettling is that they've consulted psychics. Or maybe they just mean that psychics have called them and they've followed the lead.

How did you guys read that? As they are so desperate they've talked with psychics or that they're taking everything seriously in order to find out who did this?

New here.

I wouldn't think it's odd that phychics are involved, but then again I only know this because of case files that I've seen on true crime TV where phychic's are involved to help solve a crime. A friend of mine had a brother who died, and she contacted a phychic to get answers and closure.

Also, Meghan was cremated because their family isn't local. They are going to bury her ashes when they return to their home state. The police kniow how she was killed and took samples of everything for testing/toxicology, and the body was released. With technology being as advanced as it is now, I doubt they'd need to later exhume a body for more evidence. But that is JMO.

Oh, I also wanted to add that the raid on the cigar shop on Shore Drive by NCIS could be connected to the weapons that were stolen from Little Creek. I think it was on the radio last week (??) that weapons were missing and those responsible were arrested, so that could be the reason for the raid.

The local newspaper, Virginian Pilot, finally ran a another very brief article (http://hamptonroads.com/2008/05/portsmouth-police-look-new-clues-death-16yearold). It just says that the LE is going back to the area and talking to more neighbors and looking for more clues and are asking for any info from the public. It is indeed a very good thing that the Portsmouth Police Chief has resigned. P-town has been long known to be a crime ridden city. Hopefully the interim Chief can bring in some competent investigators and solve Meghans brutal murder. It's just my opinion, but someone that would kill a little girl as violently as I have heard Meghan was murdered, is not a random killing. This was a person that had a lot of hatred of her for some reason. If it was a random killing, then the police and the media are not properly warning the public about having such an animal running loose. I hope my comments don't offend anyone, but it really bothers me that someone would be capable of doing this to a young person. Portsmouth has a high number of unsolved crimes and murders, an article in the Pilot about two months ago reported on just that subject.

I wonder who called who did the police call the news or did the news call the police? I was sure that they knew who did this was just waiting for maybe DNA but now it seems police are lost.

I hope they interveiwed her friends girls of this age always have a BFF that they tell all their secrets hopefully she told one of her friends who she was afraid of.

BigMike, I totally agree with your comment...

However, if it were a random killing and the police had no suspects, I believe this story would be in the paper/news much more than it has been. Apparently the police have a suspect in mind and they are building their case to be as solid as possible. You (general you, not you specifically) wouldn't want them to rush this and have the guy get off on a technicality. There are mass amounts of evidence that need to be examined, and I believe that once a case is built that is solid enough, the police will go public with everything (hopefully).
