About this robbery: She supposedly had $5,000 taken from her and supposedly got it back but then it is said she had between $700 and $1200. Where did $4,000 go? I have to believe that the $5,000 belonged to someone else and the only way she got that money back was by getting one of her "friends" to go after whoever "robbed" her. I can't help but believe that she was working in some additional capacity that weekend and that all of the $5,000 was not her's to keep. I believe she made no more than $1200 working her ad calls. I hope this makes sense...I'm walking a slippery slope here.

If she made $5000 on her ad calls, she would have had to have worked 25 hours over those couple days. And I don't see her making only $1200 over a couple days either. It's not adding up.

One theory seems most fitting to the situation is they robbed and intimidated her, that she ever said something about it they would do such and such. And she kept her promise, but they decided it was not enough measure to keep her silent.

Meltruth defines her sister as working at the Hotel only, Sara K’s testimony shows she works outside the hotel, mainly in Manhattan area and deliberately avoiding certain locations.

Maureen has a court hearing on Tuesday 10th, 2007. She may lose her home and custody of her son (COURT HEARING).

July 6, 2007, Friday
Maureen, Sara K and two friends (male) arrive in NYC. They work. Maureen makes an appointment for Tuesday with a realtor for renting a place. (REALTOR APPOINTMENT)

NOTE: REALTOR APPOINTMENT somewhat contradicts with COURT HEARING, not possible to say it for sure as the exact times are not indicated or without knowing what was in Maureen's mind.

8 July 2007, Sunday (evening, night)
Maureen has 700 dollars, still short 400 for her target of 1100.
Maureen and Sara K meet a guy with DREADLOCK hair, outside the hotel as they are smoking. The man looks to be in the business and he learns from Sara K that they are pimpless girls.

9 July 2007
Reinterpreted quote from Lost Girls

The original plan is to go back to CT and get back to NY at a later time (Wed). In line with COURT HEARING

Maureen decides to extend her stay one more night and probably planning to be back in CT early Tuesday and make a wire payment.
11:30 AM, Sara K and two boys depart
12:30 PM, Maureen calls Sara K as they are travelling, but Sara K doesn’t get the call.

From that point on, there’s no clear indication anywhere whether or not Maureen has her cell phone with her.

*advertiser censored* GUY AL’S CALL:
Back in Connecticut that night, Sara got a call from Al
*advertiser censored* GUY AL: You hear from Maureen? (1)
SARA K: No.
*advertiser censored* GUY AL: She called me. (2)
SARA K: Why?
*advertiser censored* GUY AL: Cause she couldn’t get ahold of you. She got robbed. She said that guy, you guys met last night—the guy with the dreads—robbed her for five grand.

Sara hung up and called Maureen’s phone. No answer. She left a voice mail: “I heard what happened. You need to call me back.”

ANALYSIS:
Possible explanation is Maureen lost her cell phone sometime after 12:30 PM.

Otherwise; 1 and 2 seems contradicting. If Maureen already called Al and they are in contact, why is he wondering she got in contact with Sara? A possible explanation can be; Maureen calls Al a while ago to report the robbery, Al tries to get back to Maureen later but he can't, so he calls Sara K. If that is the case, Al’s phone records must show incoming call from Maureen (from her cell or from another number perhaps). If not, then he must explain how he knows Maureen is robbed. Or better put, *advertiser censored* Guy Al is worried about Maureen? Or is he trying to locate Maureen?

9 July 2007, 23:30 PM
Maureen calls Missy Cann.

Reinterpreted quote from Lost Girls
On the phone, Maureen kept things light. She didn’t say anything about getting robbed or being in trouble, or how she had to be in court the next day, or that she needed cash or she’d be out on the street. She said she was calling from Penn Station. Still no clear indication whether Maureen has her cell phone with her.

MAUREEN: Can Chris come pick me up?
MISSY CANN: Maureen, it’s eleven-thirty. Chris has to work in the morning.
MAUREEN: I’ll call Will.

Maureen calls Will (brother) but he declines her request too. Missy’s phone rings again.

MAUREEN: I have enough money to take the train and I will take the next one.

ROBBERY and MAUREEN’S PHONE

Meltruth: #37
Maureen did not use cocaine. She did get robbed and it is was not a bad drug deal go wrong.

Mountain_Kat: #45
I'm a bit confused. I was under the impression that Maureen got that money back. Is that not correct?

Meltruth: #48
Montain Kat you are right she did get the money back.

Meltruth: #130
She was robbed earlier way earlier in the day. I don't believe the robbery has anything to do with her going missing and being murdered. The missing person investigated that claim early on in her missing persons case.

ANALYSIS
Maureen goes to Penn Station, she will go to CT. She can just get on the train and be on the way home, but she calls Missy and asks if Chris can come and take her, similarly asks the same favor from her brother. For somebody whose only purpose is to go home that is a bit cumbersome. Then she says she will take the next train. She indicates no intention to work further. Did Maureen take her money back?

MAUREEN: I have enough money to take the train.

Supposedly she got her money back. In that case the word “enough” is curious. Remember, she has at least 700 (perhaps more), so someone with that much cash wouldn’t use the word “enough”, as a matter of fact, someone with that much cash wouldn’t even bother to refer money. If Maureen had plenty of cash in her purse I would expect her saying something like.

MAUREEN: OK, I’ll take the next train.

ANALYSIS
The story that the robber giving Maureen her money back doesn’t look plausible and can not be verified. Who says she got her money back? And still, we don’t know for sure if Maureen has her cell phone. Though Missy Cann holds the answer to the latter.

Excerpt from Lost Girls.
“I [Missy Cann] called Boost [Mobile] customer service..... I said my sister’s missing, I need these phone records... And he e-mailed me her phone records and the password to her Boost mobile phone line.”

10 July 2007, Tuesday: Maureen doesn’t show up at eviction hearing. Her stuff is disposed at her apartment. Maureen doesn’t show up at the realtor appointment as well.

MAUREEN’S PHONE
Meltruth: #93
Maureen did not have a computer. Maureen only had one cell phone. The first few times I called her it would ring and ring than go to voice mail where we could leave messages. Within a week her voice-mail got filled up by us calling and leaving messages. Than it would ring and than say voice mail is full good bye. Than shortly after that it got turned off and it would not ring.

ANALYSIS
I believe Maureen’s phone is ON and dumped somewhere (somewhere in Gilgo Beach, probably with her body) I also believe her phone was ON all the time and its movements from tower to tower will clearly show the path the killer took that night.

There was a misunderstanding in the forum Meltruth cleared that, Maureen’s phone was used sometime in 2008?

Meltruth: #94
Sorry for the confusing. The family was told in 2008 that the phone was used. But it was a few weeks after she went missing is when it was used.

She clears the misunderstanding about 2008, but still is it a verified fact that the phone was used a few weeks after her disappearance? I believe there’s still a misunderstanding about it.

A few days later Missy and Will try to report their sister missing, Norwich police does not get the missing person report.

Missy also knows Maureen’s passwords to her online accounts. She gets in contact with NYPD, with what she has in her hand. NYPD gets the case, about a month after that.

Looking at the incoming mails NYPD notices a police officer's email. NYPD makes a wise decision to weed out a possible rotten egg and takes the case seriously, with steps necessary to verify the police officer’s alibi and investigate the missing person case.

In 2007, around late August, two NYPD detectives ask Missy Cann if her sister has ever been to Long Island.

Maureen's phone pings with a cell tower in Fire Island (that is probably the last location phone registers before battery dies), cops take a cadaver search briefly in the location.

I don’t have much info on GSM technologies but is it possible that the phone on Gilgo Beach (if it is there) can register with a tower on Fire Island (Ocean Beach)?

I believe Maureen was robbed and let go for some reason. Then the robber decided it may not be good for his well being, he found Maureen, approached her with an apologetic manner and lured her into his ground.

AFTER THE DISAPPEARANCE
Meltruth: #113
After it seem the Norwich Police department was not going to take Maureen missing person seriously I contacted NYC. I believe his name was Sgt. Duke. Because when Duke found out a police officer contacted her that weekend the Internal affairs officers step in and took over her case. Their names where detective Gearson and Detective Shaw. They were very upset about the case and how the Norwich Police treated this case when they came up to take DNA form us in the summer before Maureen was found.

Maureen’s DNA could only be entered in the database (CODIS) in August 2010. It took two and a half years to put her picture on Namus despite Norwich police was given a fully completed submission from Missy Cann, including her DNA and photo.

Maureen was found on 13 December 2010, identified on Jan 24th 2011

when u spell it out this way, dreadlox does look might suspicious

when u spell it out this way, dreadlox does look might suspicious

No piece in this story fits the other. Sara K and *advertiser censored* Guy Al deserve a good grilling.

EDIT: The records in Missy Cann's hand, if she was allowed to keep of course, may clear a lot of questions.

Let's put it this way Big A, was not sitting there posting MBB's ads for nothing.......................and his helper was likely more like a driver or overseer, IYKWIM. They like to say she was independent but that too doesn't add up.

Big A didn't post her ads...Vips was the tech guy with the program that refreshed the ads. A was "security". IF Maureen was actually robbed that night, he would have been her go-to guy. I was always of the belief that Maureen told someone she was robbed...now it appears that story came from Sarah via A. So, I'm no longer inclined to buy this theft story hook line and sinker.

See, that robbery story is shaky in every angle. What if Maureen has her phone with her and PG Al can't reach her simply because Maureen doesn't get his call? That would be curious, huh? Maybe Al is just trying to find Maureen.

I'm thinking of a possibility, it's like this;

Remember, Maureen is asking for someone to pick her up, two times. Maybe she called Sara K too, to send the boys back to New York to get her. In that time Sara K made a call to *advertiser censored* Guy Al telling him Maureen is at Penn Station, but when Maureen got vanished Sara K just kept silent, out of fear, out of stupidity perhaps.

Lets go back to the drawing board:
http://nypost.com/2011/05/15/two-nypd-cops-with-history-of-hooker-trouble-being-eyed-in-li-killings/

"One cop was forced out of the job in the 1990s when his supervisors learned he spent time pursuing hookers and paying street walkers and down-and-out women for sex while he was supposed to be on patrol."

"other officer still works for the NYPD but was stripped of his gun and badge years ago because he allegedly assaulted a prostitute and got arrested during a sting operation"

Ok so these are two cops who were eyed as POI's early on. Apparently they are not the same Staten Island who was the last person to call Maureen.

Here's an officer who was PWOP (patronizing while on patrol), time fits and resigned:

That man on the mountain bike was D*C* (Please check link for uncensored, i'm trying to stay on bessie's good side so this doesnt all get wiped), who was a 34-year-old officer on the bicycle patrol in the 103rd Precinct in Queens in 1999. Internal Affairs investigators watched him ride from the station house to the brothel, during his shift, wearing his uniform. They watched him walk inside, heard a manager instruct a prostitute to have sex with him and heard her say not to charge him. Mr. C pleaded guilty to official misconduct, paid a $1,000 fine and quit.

The other two bad cops are likely mentioned in the above articles. Ok now here's the important part:

Now let's go back to Oak Beach for a moment. How does Maureen get from Penn or Times SQ all the way out to Jones Beach. Let's stop over at Joe Brewer's and ponder for a moment how he might figure in. 8 the fairway, where our entire mystery unfolded from. Let's go backwards, 8, 6, 4...then Two..... Two is where you all ll need to take a peak. Joe Brewer's neighbor just Three doors down has the same name as our disgraced NYPD bike patrol cop. Now I really need some expert sleuthers like JUST K's help to tell me if JB's neighbor is a related to DC, but I have a strong strong suspicion that he is either Father or BRo. If this is true, it means an nypd cop who is likely one of the POI's in the LISK case, might be Brewer's neighbor. And I'm thinking that is the reason why Shannan ran when Gus called the copss. Can I get some help with this one?

Now let's go back to Oak Beach for a moment. How does Maureen get from Penn or Times SQ all the way out to Jones Beach.

You are confusing Jones Beach for Oak Beach. You sound incoherent to me. Careful not to run in marshlands and stay away from creepy doctors.

Breakdown: I think one of the NYPD POI's is related to JB's neighbor ...

Oak Beach is on Jones Beach.

I've been talking to Emre too much but here's a breakdown: I think one of the NYPD POI's is JB's neighbor plain & simple

First I have say one thing again, I believe Atlantic City murders is completely different. IMO

I believe NYPD did a good job, much better than SCPD. Remember Melissa's "second" phone, turning up in a man's possession. I wonder if it was really a "second" phone. Judging by what I read about these girls so far, money for them is like easy come and easy go. So, I think Melissa's phone was a high end one at the time, so it may be her actual phone.

Still a second phone it may be. And perhaps she left it home? I don't think so. Because I understand NYPD takes this discovery very serious, so I think they believe regardless of whether it's her first or second phone, it was with her.

Breakdown: I think one of the NYPD POI's is related to JB's neighbor ...

Oak Beach is on Jones Beach.

You're digging up some nutso (in a good way!) stuff there, Lilo. That Village Voice article: I can't even...

Anyway, I did a bunch of digging around trying to link the two names together as relatives, and I can't find a connection at all. I don't think they are related. I was able to find a loose connection to the K.C. person to my, um, er, *verrrrrry* close relative with the same last name, but not to D. C. I know for a fact my close relative isn't related to either of the two C's and in face he and his son aren't related to any fellow C's at all in NY, but his son's 4 square profile came up for K.C. ! :runaway:

(That was completely freaky but this is a good reminder to myself that sometimes the free people/records search sites incorrectly show social media connections between people with the same last name, even if they aren't actually related.)

Im digging and digging but what interests me is that DC has ZERO foot print since that arrest. Absolutely nothing although he did live in Long Beach and I dont have to tell you how close that is to OP. BTW, JB's neighbor i was thinking of is TC, altho KC comes up too see if you get anything for TC & DC

I dont they are bros so possibly cousin (you know how close cousins of same age can be)...still lookin

Hi All. I never post, but do read and lurk on this thread. I grew up in CT and am a New Yorker now for 15 years. I just wanted to clarify that when a person takes the Metro North from CT to Manhattan and vice versa, they do not do so from Port Authority. You catch the metro north to and from CT from NYC at Grand Central Station. Port Authority is a bus terminal.

It is strange that Maureen would say that she was at Port Authority to take the next "train" (Metro North) home to CT. It makes no sense as Metro North only runs out of Grand Central. Navigating NYC can be overwhelming if you are not used to it.

This shows me that she was very "green" as far as getting around the city.

Maybe she thought she could get home by Metro North from Port Authority and when she got there she realized she couldn't, which is why she called for rides...because she was now going to have to navigate the subway to get to grand central (which can be SLOW at the time of night) or walk to Grand Central at 1:30 in the morning and was tired, overwhelmed, and or scared from getting robbed.

Also, it is very important to note that I believe that trains to CT from NYC on Metro North Stop running around 1:00 A.M. or so and then resume early in the morning for commuter hours. I don't think there was even a "next" Metro North train for Maureen to take at that time of night until around 5 in the morning.

Unless of course she was referring to the subway as "the train" (As New Yorkers do) but it didn't sound like that to me. She said " I'll take the next train, I have enough money". So weird . As she wouldn't be able to do that from Port Authority or at that hour maybe not even from Grand Central.

Bottom line? I do not believe that she knew how to navigate the city, not if she thought she was taking Metro North from Port Authority, and simply may have asked the wrong person for help or directions after discovering that Port Authority was only about the bus.

Someone that looked trustworthy or in uniform, like a cop or a MTA worker? Or just your average, nondescript helpful New Yorker.

I spend a lot of time on the LI shore, Robert Moses, Fire Island, and The Hampton Bays especially, during the summer months and I always think of Maureen, Megan, Melissa, Amber and Shannan when I am there.. ( and even when I'm not) always thinking..who ARE YOU? Where are you? Always hoping to hear that they will catch him.

It disgusts me when people insinuate that it was somehow the girls' fault for "putting themselves in danger". So offensive.

That's a great point spice, maureen was calling for a ride because she didnt want to wait til 5 am for the next train. Makes perfect sense

So if Maureen's at Port Authority and she can't get a ride home what is she going to do to kill 3 hours before her train? She's going to take the 7 to Grand Central and sit there and wait for her train? Or is she going to walk since she has time to kill? (42 at 2:00 am) is crowded enough that it's not scary to walk around by yourself. So she could walk to Grand Central. Are we sure she's going to grand central...could she be taking amtrak or a bus? Amtrak to CT is less than 20 dollars

she's probably going to walk to a Mcdonalds right around 42nd street and get something to eat and sit there and kill time. And if you remember from Lost Girls...Melissa was always hanging out in one of the Mickey D's in Times SQ.....Mickey D's.... Mickey Mouse.....hmm :mickey:

If she was planning on taking Amtrak to CT (which runs to New London on the shoreline) she would have had to take Amtrak from Penn Station.
Again, I highly doubt Amtrak was running to where she was going at that hour either. Metro North runs about every hour until around 1 :00 A.M.

It confuses me as to why she was at Port Authority at ALL, if she was planning on taking a "train" which is what she said to Missy. She never mentioned a bus that I know of.

It's just strange, and could be indicative of her lack of knowledge of the city and its overwhelming transportation system. She may have had false confidence at first and then realized...she couldn't take a train from Port Authority.

She tried for a ride from both Will and Missy and when that failed maybe she asked someone "how to get to Amtrak (Penn Station) or which train to Metro North etc. Maybe she asked someone that worked for the MTA or a transit Cop or something.

A note on walking around Manhattan late at night. The area that she was in is definitely lit up and busier than most so no it wouldn't be scary per se. But the later it gets the weirder it gets as well. As a woman in NYC, I don't care where I am, it is always unsettling to walk around alone really late at night, as is the subway platform (you'd be surprised how unpopulated it can get late night). And that area is just shady in general, with so much transient traffic in general. Port Authority and Penn Station are NOTORIOUS places for Pimps and traffikers to prey on runaways, unsuspecting girls new to the city, or girls already in "the life." It's pretty shocking really.

If you read the book "Girls Like Us" by Rachael Lloyd she gets into it. Rachael is the founder of a nonprofit here in NYC called GEMS (Girls Education and Mentoring Services) and works to help girls in the life to get out of it. Many die so young and are very often victims of severe abuse from pimps and johns alike.

She fights these issues often, like fighting to get backpage and Craigs List taken down. And Raising awareness about Domestic Trafficking in the US (We tend to call it "teen prostitution") when many of these girls are not of the legal age to even consent to sex under law (here its 17) and are being bought and sold by grown men. In any event, her book is hard to put down and will inform anyone who reads it about the world that these girls/women navigate and how truly frightening it is. I think the average age of entry into prostitution is 14 years old in the US and their average life expectancy is somewhere in their late twenties. Here is a link to it, I highly recommend it. Rachael was a victim of it herself and ended up being saved by someone when her pimp tried to kill her. She then overacheived, got her masters, and opened GEMS to help other girls.

Here is the book. http://www.amazon.com/Girls-Like-Us-Fighting-Memoir/dp/0061582069

Craigs List and the internet have made things that much more rampant.

Maureen called/was last seen at Penn Station NOT Port Authority

Quote:
"Maureen Brainard-Barnes, last seen at Penn Station in Manhattan"

Quote:
"Maureen Brainard-Barnes is last seen in her room at the Super 8 Hotel in midtown Manhattan. Her last known call that night is to her sister, Missy, during which she says she is at Penn Station"

And of further interest: Some of the sick calls, from the probable killer, to Melissa Barthelemy's sister was traced to Penn Station:

http://archive.longislandpress.com/2011/04/12/10-remains-on-beach-new-details-in-serial-killer-case/

"The calls were less than three minutes—the minimum duration police need to pinpoint its origin—and were placed from Penn Station and the Port Authority bus terminal, areas too crowded to find or identify a suspect via surveillance cameras, according to the Times."
