The Tulalip Tribes is a collection of close families that have made monumental economic and political strides in recent decades. But not even success can shield Indian communities from the vulnerabilities and pressures facing many U.S. kids.

Jaylen Fryberg, like many Native American children, lived with a foot in each of two worlds.
There was the hormone-fueled community of a suburban high-school freshman, where the polite, fun-loving chatterbox played football and video games and shared every nuance of adolescent social longing on Twitter.

And there was the tight-knit world of his Tulalip Tribes, where much of life was steeped in history and tradition and where virtually everyone he knew was family in some way.

But a day after Jaylen walked into the Marysville-Pilchuck High School cafeteria and shot two of his cousins and three other students — most of them also Native American — before killing himself, those who knew him were struggling to understand where Jaylen got lost navigating these universes.“I

And while poverty, joblessness and other social ills have helped push Native American youth suicide rates to more than double the national average, the Tulalips are among the country’s most financially successful, sophisticated and best-run tribes. The tribes’ casino and retail developments help drive Snohomish County’s economy, and its government has won awards from Harvard University.

In fact, while the circumstances leading to the shooting remain murky, there’s little to suggest that Jaylen’s cultural heritage was in any way a driving factor. Friends and Jaylen’s postings on social media suggest instead he was worked up over a girl.

Still, surviving the complexities of being a modern American teenager can also be more challenging for Native American kids.

“When you celebrate your rich culture and go to school where it’s completely different, that’s always going to be an added pressure,” Parker said.

He added, “They’re very family-oriented. All of them come from big families that love and support each other. That’s what makes a lot of it unreal, I guess.”

On Saturday, tribal members walked with candles and drums through the rain, mourning Jaylen and his victims.

The Tulalip community is small and private, different from the “outside.” Go back a few generations and there’s likely a link among each of the roughly 2,700 members living on the 22,000-acre reservation. Another 1,700 live off the reservation.

Many residents would speak to reporters but not give their names for fear they would upset someone they know. One called the shooting “internally devastating.”

. It’s that closeness that has helped with the grieving process, residents said.
“Any time you lose a prominent tribal member it’s traumatic and you try to pull together,” said State Sen. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, and a member of the Tulalip Tribes.

Even so, at a time when sadness can easily turn toward anger, tribal members aren’t expressing animosity toward Jaylen’s family, residents said, just mourning. The same held true for many at the high school.

“He really never was a bad kid,” said student Dylen Boomer. “People loved him. He was very respectful.
Among Tulalip teens, Jaylen was more steeped in tribal culture than most. He chanted and played Native American drums, hunted and fished with his dad and participated regularly in Indian ceremonies.

“He was a really good drummer and singer,” said Killian Page, who was a few years older, but had been wrestling with Jaylen since he was 11. “Everyone thought he was going to be big in the tribe.”

Boomer recently walked out of the school weight-training room in time to see another student’s face bloodied. Jaylen, who wore his hair long and in a ponytail, had gotten in a fight after the other kid allegedly used racial slurs.

Tulalip and Marysville are relatively integrated, though he remembers being the only Native American in his class when he went to school. "Time moves along and we move with it," Sheldon said.
On the reservation, everyone "is related in one shape or form," McCoy said Saturday. The shooter's grandmother was his secretary for about 15 years.
"The family, both sides, are very religious," he said. "If I were to walk into their homes right now, they would probably be praying."

Was one of the girls at the table dating one of the guys at the table????

There are many sites that address symptoms of mental problems in teenage boys. The surprising thing is, apparently, JF did not exhibit these. However, I still cannot get past the idea that he must have had a mental issue; normal behavior would not include killingl/attempting to kill friends/relatives even if there were girl problems. The teen years are filled with relationship problems.

Was one of the girls at the table dating one of the guys at the table????

Yes, Zoe, the girl who died on scene was dating Andrew, the shooters cousin.

This article talks about medivac helicopters that were asked to come and did, only to be turned away, instead transported all 4 victims by land. Interesting read.

Thanks! The article's been re-printed on tulalipnews.com. I was surprised at the decision also - like I said earlier, Harborview is the goto place for airlifts.

Neurosurgeons and pediatric intensivists were on standby at Harborview, the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center in the state.

Providence is rated as a Level 2 trauma center for adults, but has a Level 3 rating for patients under the age of 18, according to the state Department of Health.
...
Martin said using Airlift Northwest would have been a much faster way to get the patients to Harborview or even Providence.
“Once we have them on board, it would take us 20 minutes to get from Everett or Marysville to Harborview. We fly 155 miles an hour,” said Martin.

A debriefing is in the works so more information is forthcoming in the next couple of weeks. According to the article, Marysville-Pilchuck is only 7.5 miles from Providence so that may be one of the reasons for turning the helicopters away. Providence seems to be well-equipped for trauma cases but I'm interested in the followup to this story.

Spell check smoking!!

Just some gut stuff here. I am sure my notions are influenced by working with troubled youth. I do not know much about that particular culture but after reading his tweets, my sense is that one of two things might have occurred.

At some point during the tweets I got the sense that someone may have found out that whomever parent they thought they were might not be true. The fact that there were “family members killed and shot at indicates some shame or secret that was too mortifying to be “discovered”..

It would help explain, in this day and age why, at this point so much remains muddled as it relates to dynamics that resulted in what occurred. Usually, by this point much nuance has already been discovered.. That type of thing is kept “secret” and is sure seems as if the secrets are many here.

At other points (did you forget that she was my g friend or something akin to that) made me ponder if a relative had sex with his old friend. There was also mention of kids so it made me wonder if there was a pregnancy in here.

I have always been surprised at the amount of anger and rage these occurrences stir in people. Victim or pained individuals can and do manifest themselves in different ways. At the end of the day, obviously, at some level he was deeply wounded as well.

Does that make his choices “correct” no but shooter or deceased, everyone is a human being, the bewilderment is more related to age. I do defiantly believe that social media has much to do with this. There are little opportunities for these kids to process troubles, share and learn how others respond to stress or wounding. Most of that stuff is not handled in 140 characters or in public forums – resulting in many secrets.

As a clinician, it is a time based entity – good therapy. It takes time, for trust to be established, for the pt to come to the conclusion that the clinician is competent, that the clinician does care, that the clinician is not judging anything. That takes words- time investment on both parties.

IMO for this generation “sharing” is about taking a picture of some salad. Being drunk, or smiling alone on a cell phone. The notion of “selfie” in and of itself implies noone else around does it not?

That is their definition of “socializing” is off -- when in reality it is a very lonely activity. How many of us older folks have pictures of ourselves just being somewhere? It is a real oddity – humans are social animals. Part of that, a big part, is being able to communicate in ways that transcend wanting a dash of cream in ones coffee.

I think this generation is going to have huge problems in the roles of husband or wife – that too takes a skill set. If you look at his tweets conflict was ended with an *advertiser censored** you, shouting was demonstrated by holding down the cap key. Solutions to whatever the issues were, were hypothetically resolved, or ignored, in a few sentences not face to face.

IMO twitter and FB are hideous, and if one looks at it the horrible increase in school shootings IMO there is a correlation between FB Twitter, cocial skills, coping skilss communication skills.s

– there are just no coping skills being developed on keyboards or in 140 charactors or in text shorthand, which in and of itself implies a need to be in a "hurry"....................................

Catching up and seeing a lot of thought similiar to He was adept at hiding his inner thoughts and feelings. If one looks at his tweets there were cries for help, talking about dying, about not being able to handle "this" about rage, and confusion -- I think the big gap does relate to social media - parents of this generation learned saw etc "models" of actual communication. So where is this generation going to "learn" that skill set.

And since Twitter is so limiting there is even no way for one to repsond for clarification or further info - too many characters! Parents IMO speak a different language among all generations (!) but with social media there is another whole language mixed in wiht generationial stuff.

To the best he "knew" and observed his peers - he was, more than once reaching out in 140 charactor bursts and smiling faces or whatever those little things are!
even conflict, wounding, love, sadness is all done in a hurry..........

CARRIS! Wow... thank you for this. I would really like to copy and paste this whole post to my friends and family in an email.

Very well said, and I agree.

Thank you for succinctly putting your thoughts on paper- it has helped me- immensely~ Frigga

I am with you Twitter alian to me . I had a real hard time figuring out his tweets its a busy place (visually) but flet the media was only giving his Twitter far from a fair and balanced (HA gate Fox)account of what he was trying to say .

I too was surprised (not a prude here either!) at the verbilizing of sex with one another . And then wiht all the retweets , which I assume means what it sounds like (!) then folks are passing those notions around . It struck me as who would care if x had sex with r ---if one does not know or care about either x or r!!!

Kinda like wearing T Shirts - unique to say the least . This is funny ! I bet neither of us had a clue that

Maybe you and I are just not hip, not "my bad" or don't like talking in sign language!

I have 14 year old and a 16 year old. I have access to their FB accounts which neither ever use. I log on them regularly to see what their friends are up to. I don't see anything about sex, drugs, etc. From her friends. Same with Instagram. Twitter is a pain to use and navigate to be honest. Maybe kids know this and that's why kids are more open on it? I can't believe how much drug/sex talk there was on the Washington kids' twitter accounts especially considering these kids were 14. It wasn't even limited to Jaylen and the victims- lots of their mutual friends had raunchy tweets too. I don't shock easily but I was this time. Am I the only nosy parent when it comes to my kids social networks?

Could the decision on where to take the kids be due to religious reasons? I'm just guessing at that but I do know people who will drive out of their way to go to a hospital that is affiliated with their faith and beliefs.

I was wondering if had to do with how quickly and easily the parents could get to the hospital...I'm not sure the parents are airlifted at the same time, my husband (House Supervisor) says family, not even parents are airlifted.

I wondered the same thing. :) I live on the Olympic Peninsula and all the trauma cases out here get airlifted to Harborview.
According to the article, everyone quoted said they didn't know why, weren't part of the decision or just declined to comment.

I'd be surprised if the families or Tulalip Tribal officials requested Providence for religious reasons during such an emergency. Maybe the initial reports stated a higher number of victims and officials decided to split the groups between the two hospitals. I'm really curious and hoping more details will be released soon.

Cooper oversees overall emergency medical services’ (EMS) operations and response among multiple jurisdictions across the county.

Cooper said an information officer would respond with answers to The Times’ questions Monday afternoon, but none did.

Good point! Considering the injuries and how difficult it was to even identify the victims, that makes sense. If it looked like the kids were going to die within a short time I could see officials trying to get their parents to them ASAP.

my husband (House Supervisor) THAT is funny!!!

How did you make your kitty jam to the " Purina Paw Parade" by The Felines??

I thought the decision was made to take the boys (cousins of the shooter) to a different hospital so the family's of the female victims wouldn't be in the same location as the shooters relatives. At the time, I'm sure nobody was expecting the amount of forgiveness they were showing that early after the tragedy. Just my thoughts.

I'm on the Olympic Peninsula as well (hi neighbor) and you're right trauma gets airlifted to Harborview or Harrison. On friday I just thought they went to closest hospital that was trauma ready. But hearing they had airlifts waiting is confusing since they didn't even use them to transfer the boys once they could.
I wonder if it could be due to insurance coverage? I know Jefferson Healthcare is completely tied in with Providence

No that was never confirmed- they didn't even have ID's on the girls at that time. Nate was transferred to free up resources need for the more critical. I think they moved Andrew because he was the least critical of the 3. Splitting the 4 between 2 hospitals made it easier on staff and gave the families more individual time with support staff.

I'm not sure where the story about not airlifting the boys is coming from. I watched the second boy come off the helicopter live on tv. I was at my mom's and explaining to her how goofy it is at Harborview. Victims get airlifted to the helipad, that is on the west side of the building, and get loaded into an ambulance that drives them a half block around to the ER that is on the east side. I used to drive ambulance at Harborview and have watched that many of times.

Are they saying that airlift was immediately at the scene? Normally the closest trauma center will do triage.

ETA- it is my understanding that the boy shot in the jaw was not airlifted. It seems like a weird choice considering traffic, but I suppose if that was what his family wanted and he was stable enough, it would be allowed.
