Absolutely love this particular treatment of Lyle's tragic and mysterious death.

Yes, it's great. It puts everything in one place, plus a couple details I didn't know. It says that his pants were a size 34 waist and that his belt was only a size 31" and every hole had been used, as if he had been losing weight and tightening it up. I guess I didn't realize he only weighed 140 pounds, which is very thin even for men much shorter than he was. I think he was depressed and losing weight over time, not wearing his pants fashionably large.

The write up (https://features.wearemel.com/the-st...925#.9t0sf2coi) says he may have had a slight Canadian accent and that the name Stevik is popular in Norway. I have an English-speaking friend from Montreal whose accent sounds ever so slightly Scandanavian. I wonder if Lyle had a parent from Norway or was from Norway himself, and had a slight accent that sounded Canadian to "Barb" because Canadian accents from certain areas sound a little Scandanavian.

It is 50 living persons in Norway whos last name is Stevik so I would not say it is a popular last name... It is at least one place called Stevik in Norway and people with that name have to have roots from a place named Stevik, that is part of our name traditions. Said that I dont think his name is Stevik.

I saw this article and thought of Lyle right away:

http://news.nationalpost.com/news/c...ares-state-of-emergency-over-suicide-epidemic

Also, aboriginals are constantly going missing and getting murdered. I tried to find the list but I think they are still working to release it, as this was the most recent article I could find:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...urdered-aboriginal-men-women/article26324355/

What are your thoughts? From the first article, the reservation is upon very hard times and apparently have been for some time now. Could it be possible that he was from a reservation such as this one, and ran away from the poverty, abuse and despair? But after leaving he just couldn't come to grips with everything and took his own life? Perhaps that's why he didn't have anything of value with him, too-large clothing, etc.

Looking forward to feedback on this.

Maybe "Lyle" was running from something, such as a crime? Maybe he committed something or had been involved with something illegal, either in that location (maybe he got a newspaper to see if there was anything being reported on the crime??) or even in Idaho, he had to have known that Best Western address somehow. Maybe the crisp money didn't come from "Lyle" but was given to him in exchange for something? Hush money? or for a favor? Were his entire actions accounted for while pacing the highway? Did someone see him the entire time and see him walk back to the motel? Maybe he felt guilty for doing what he did and that is why he hung himself? I just find it weird to have fresh, clean bills if you were planning on killing yourself, unless you needed them for something else that didn't pan out as expected, and he felt his only escape from whatever was to hang himself ...

He had injuries to his hands, if I am right about what I read upthread. From a fistfight, maybe?

Replying to Lorrie's post about the Norway angle.....

Yeah, though not Norwegian I have lived in Norway for 17 years and never came across a Stevik. And Lyle does not look Norwegian in the slightest (yeah I know I'm being stereotypical, but it's true he doesn't).

Got this email today:

In 2014 you had contacted the Canada missing person program to advised them of a certain resemblance between a missing person in Montreal Normand RIVET and unidentified Lyle Stevik from Washington state.

The DNA comparison has been made and the result is negative.

Thank you for your interest in this investigation.

Wow, I'm glad they got back to you.

I admit to being quite surprised he isn't Normand. They look so much alike...

This is a photo regression of Lyle Stevik, an unidentified John Doe who was found in a Washington hotel in 2001 after his suicide. I had been briefly looking into a match with Wojtek Stasiak, until I saw the death photos - my first and immediate thought was that Lyle looks very, very Native to me. Particularly from the side. I realize that some of the regression photos look more European/mixed - possibly Portuguese or mixed Caucasian/Hispanic. But in the actual death photos, to me he looks very noticeably Native.

I'd be really interested in missing Native guys from either Shoshone-Bannock nations (Idaho) or, if he came in from Port Angeles, it's worth looking for starters at any Kwakiutl guys missing from Vancouver Island, for example. I am curious why he listed the Meridian, ID hotel as his residence - whether that was symbolic for some reason, whether that area meant something to him. Worth keeping in mind that a Native America accent in general is sometimes confused for a Canadian accent.

He looks similar but according to namus both of them have DNA tests that are complete so that means they aren't a match.

I'm quoting myself. I guess I was wrong about that. I thought I read somewhere that if the DNA has been submitted that they automatically check it against everyone else. I can't find where I read it and I was informed that that's not correct.

Does anyone know if this young man has been considered?

Hm. Interesting possibility.

Side by side with one of Lyle's recons -- the resemblance is stronger with the PM photo, I think. He's got the cleft chin and the somewhat bumpy nose, though his whole face seems somewhat thinner than Lyle's. .I can't tell whether that's just because the photos are at different scales. His mouth seems very similar. The eyebrows don't look thick enough. But height and weight are good, and brown eyes to hazel is probably in range. Age is way up at the top of Lyle's estimate though. NAMPN says he was a computer entrepreneur, which fits with what some of us speculated about Lyle's profession (since his hands don't look like he did physical labor).

There's DNA somewhere. I suppose the next step would be to verify whether it's the same kind of DNA and they're both in the same database.

It would need turned in, we don't know who holds the DNA in each case. I could list a few cases where we assumed there was DNA compared but it wasn't.

He looks very Native to us too; but there is no note of shovel teeth

Wish I had time to get to Reddit. Do you know what photos were used to make the regression? Looks very similar to Carl's so I'm wondering if his was used and not the PM photos.
