Authorities dropping 24/7 ground operation as search for Jayme Closs continues

(*video at link, rough transcription below of Sheriff speaking re: 911 call)

REPORTER (voiceover): I asked the Sheriff earlier this week, if he will release the 911 call from the Close family home that is apparently still being analyzed.

SHERIFF FITZGERALD: I’m struggling with that because it’s not what we want yet. I mean they’re trying to do it better and fix it up but they can’t.

REPORTER: Have you listened to it?

SHERIFF FITZGERALD: I have listened to it.

REPORTER: Do you, I mean…

SHERIFF FITZGERALD: You don’t hear nothing that can help you. I mean it’s very confusing.

Jayme Closs Investigation Scaled Back
The Emergency Operations Center will no longer be open at night, but the department says the tip line will continue to be open 24/7.

The sheriff's department says while some of the physical support, like paper signs, for Jayme may be fading that doesn't mean the community has given up. Fitzgerald says the hope that Jayme will come home is just as strong.

As of Thursday morning, Fitzgerald says there were still 25 law enforcement personal working on the case from monitoring social media, reviewing tips and handling leads.

As we enter hunting season the department is asking hunters to watch for any items of interest on their land and to also watch their trail cameras for anything suspicious.

For now, the department says it won't be performing any more ground searches unless a tip leads to a localized area

Sheriff: Closs Case Remains ‘No. 1 Priority’ Amid Declining Tips
FBI, state and county investigators will work leads from their home bases. Fitzgerald believes the key could be a person’s sudden change in behavior.

“We’re just hoping and praying, everyone is, that there’s some tips, some clues for closure because it affects everyone,” one Barron resident said.

All tech and social media clues are being analyzed at the FBI’s Milwaukee office. The search for two vehicles of interest has so far come up dry.

“Somebody knows something, there’s no question about it,” Fitzgerald said.

Entire country helping raise money for Closs family, as friends share more stories
“Like a woman who just lost her sister and her god-daughter who is missing, I mean not well, I don’t think any of the family is doing well,” MS, a family friend said. MS is talking about her friend, JS, who just lost her sister Denise and brother-in-law James Closs. She said she’s been doing whatever she can to help the family.

“The bracelets started as a small fundraiser with like a group of 100 or so people,” MS said. There are other efforts too, including a page and lanterns for sale.

“There’s a Facebook page called light the way home for Jayme and they are solar lanterns that you can put outside to keep a light on for Jayme,” MS said.

There’s also a fund at Sterling Bank, where all the money donated will go to Jayme once she’s found.

There are no answers to who shot Denise and James Closs last month in this rural Wisconsin town, and no sign of their 13-year-old daughter Jayme, who vanished the night they were killed.

In recent days, the operation scaled down some; many federal and state agents who had filled local motels headed home.

Inside the sheriff’s headquarters, an office is being converted into a permanent operations center where local and outside law enforcement will continue working on the Closs case. “They’re not giving up,” Sheriff Fitzgerald said, adding that the number of tips wasn’t enough to keep so many officers here.

“I go to bed every night hoping my phone rings in the night saying, ‘We have her.’”

Jayme Closs and Cora Jones went missing 24 years apart. But their cases share tragic similarities.
Even though the cases happened 24 years apart, they both:
  • Attracted national media attention early on, giving the cases widespread coverage on network news shows and, in the case of Jayme Closs, a significant social media presence on Facebook.
  • Stunned and saddened the small communities where they disappeared. Residents in Barron County and Waupaca County rallied to the support of the families of both missing girls with vigils and candlelight ceremonies.
  • Prompted law enforcement from the county, state and federal levels, including the FBI, to mobilize.
  • Involved search efforts involving law enforcement and civilians. Technically advanced search tools that were not available when Cora disappeared have been used in Jayme’s case.
  • Generated a wide-ranging number of tips from the public. In Jayme’s case, the Barron County Sheriff’s Department has received more than 2,100 tips.

A Barron man whose home is close to the scene of a double murder and abduction on Oct. 15 has been charged with possession of methamphetamine in Barron County Circuit Court.
A complaint filed Wednesday, Oct. 31, identified the defendant as Bradley S. Church, 51, of rural Barron. The defendant’s home is across the highway and just west of the home where rural Barron residents Jim and Denise Closs were shot to death Oct. 15, and their 13-year-old daughter, Jayme, was abducted, launching a nationwide search.
Defendant lived near crime scene, arrested after search

On Monday, the News-Shield received a phone call from an Illinois subscriber who owns recreational property in the Cameron area. The subscriber said the FBI had contacted them at their suburban Chicago home and asked to search their Wisconsin property.
Fitzgerald said the situation described by the subscriber is typical of literally scores of investigative visits by local and county officers, Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation or FBI agents.
“At the height of the case, (visiting that property) could be any one of a lot of reasons why we wanted to go there,” he said. “Maybe it was because of suspicious activities, or there was a tip, or agents and officers had some other reason for going.”
Fitzgerald also said there was some discussion about one of the suspicious vehicles seen near the crime scene. They were first described as a 2008-14 red/orange Dodge Challenger, and either a 2006-10 black Ford Edge OR a 2004-10 black Acura MDC.
“Now, we are looking at a couple other (kinds of) red cars,” Fitzgerald said. “We’re not 100 percent sure.”
Closs case enters new phase

Preliminary hearing set for man accused of breaking into Closs home in Barron Co.
The man accused of breaking into the Closs home and stealing some of missing 13-year-old Jayme’s clothes appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Kyle Jaenke-Annis, 32, is charged with burglary and felony bail jumping after the October 27 incident.
News 18 spoke with a jail official on Wednesday who said he has not posted bond and remains behind bars.

Jaenke-Annis will be back in court November 13 for a preliminary hearing.

UPDATE: Sheriff's department uses helicopter in Jayme Closs search
Thursday, the department again used a helicopter to cover the area that was searched by the public to look for any changes on the ground, especially since most of the leaves have fallen now. The sheriff says this search is not based on any new tips.

The department says the case still remains their number one priority.

Officials conduct helicopter search of area where 13-year-old Jayme Closs went missing
On Thursday, officers used a helicopter to take a second look at the area that volunteers previously searched on foot. Given that the leaves had fallen, Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald explained that the search was meant to identify any changes on the ground. Although the search wasn’t prompted by a specific tip, Fitzgerald remained optimistic that the key to the case was still out there.

“There is a tip that will bring Jayme home and we continue to look for that tip,” Fitzgerald said.

Going Inside The Daily Hunt To Find Jayme Closs
The Barron County Sheriff’s Department is still getting dozens of tips a day in Jayme Closs’s case. The day starts at 8:30 every morning with that question looming among a team of investigators huddled inside a briefing room inside the Barron County Law Enforcement Center.

“At 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. we have a phone conference with FBI and DCI in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Eau Claire, wherever agents happen to be they stop what they’re doing and get in on this phone call,” Sheriff Fitzgerald said.

Sheriff Fitzgerald explains the process behind the thousands of interviews they’ve conducted so far. “You look at family, you look at relatives, you look at coworkers, sex offenders,” he said.

“What they’re doing now is going over that information, making sure two plus two equals four. Seems simple but if two plus two doesn’t equal four on an interview then we go back and interview again,” Sheriff Fitzgerald said.

“As of now we just don’t have any good physical evidence either which is another frustrating part of this case,” Sheriff Fitzgerald said. That includes already 80 pieces of separate videos or pictures from homes and businesses along Highway 8 from that night. Investigators have also kept a close eye on social media. As Facebook groups pop up, Fitzgerald says investigators check every post.

Four state troopers have been brought into help assist the county search for the vehicles possibly involved in this case. Sheriff Fitzgerald also made some comparisons to Jacob Wetterling’s disappearance.

Investigators regroup to review leads in Jayme Closs mystery
Dozens of investigators searching for 13-year-old Jayme Closs met Friday in Barron, Wis. to review more than 2,300 tips and other leads that they've tracked since Oct. 15, when her parents were shot to death in their home and she disappeared without a trace.

Despite the large number of investigators from his department, the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation and the FBI, Fitzgerald said, they still have "no working theory" of what happened inside the Closs family home on the outskirts of Barron that night.

Fitzgerald said authorities are "not concentrating on Challenger tips now." They're still taking those tips and haven't given up on the Challenger, he said, but he added that there are "some discrepancies" that need to be checked out.

We lean towards targeted," he added, noting that the killings were done at an odd time and place for a random crime to occur.

The sheriff said he doesn't know if there was one suspect or two. "There isn't a lot of evidence here. We do have some," he said, declining to elaborate.

He said investigators have looked at social media platforms. They've interviewed sex offenders, family members, people who worked with the Closses at the Jennie-O plant, and some who were terminated who might have a revenge motive. They've taken DNA samples. Everyone has cooperated, Fitzgerald said.

Investigators no closer to finding missing teen Jayme Closs whose parents were found dead in Wisconsin home
On a Sunday nearly one month ago, JS held a birthday party for her grandson at her Barron, Wisconsin home. JS’s sister Denise Closs, who lived just a couple of miles away, came to the party with her husband Jim and their 13-year-old daughter, Jayme.

Following the party, SA said she texted Denise around 8:30 p.m., as they normally did. But what happened just hours later ensured their lives would never be normal again.

The morning of October 15, “The sheriff and some of his deputies showed up at my doorstep asking if we knew Denise and Jim,” JS told Dateline. “And then they told us the news -- that they were shot and that Jayme was missing.”

“I was home alone when she called me. You get a phone call that early in the morning and you see it’s your sister -- you know something bad had happened,” SA recalled to Dateline. “She told me to sit down. She had bad news. And I also fell to the ground and probably screamed so loud.”

Jayme’s aunt SA told Dateline that her 13-year-old niece had no access to money or transportation. Sheriff Fitzgerald told Dateline Jayme’s cell phone is in police possession.

Family of missing Wisconsin teen Jayme Closs shares story weeks after disappearance
Wisconsin teen Jayme Closs went missing four weeks ago. Since then, her loved ones have been living in what they describe as sleep-walking, a constant daze since their world was flipped on its head. “Our minds go 24/7, every single thing,” said SA, Jayme’s aunt.

Family says her soft giggle, dimple and thick eyebrows could help strangers spot her. “We just want Jayme home. We want to know why all of this happened, just wish we had some answers and hoping for that miracle of Jayme coming home,” her aunt JS said.

They believe the attack was targeted and planned. Family members recently returned to the Closs house in search for answers of their own. “It brought up more questions for us,” SA said.

Aunt SA and the others said while the community support in Barron has been overwhelming, the rumors connected to this case on social media really hurt.

One they dismiss angrily is this idea Jayme had some secret boyfriend.

“There has to be something out there. Someone has that one bit of information that we need to come forward with,” SA said.

#JaymeCloss family shared a couple new photos with me tonight. I asked what features people should focus on- soft giggles, her dimpled chin when she smiles, thick eyebrows, redish blond hair & hazel eyes that may appear almost blue. #FindJayme #FindJaymeCloss
