Jayme Closs 'hid in the bathtub with her mother' as man is charged with kidnapping and murder | Daily Mail Online
Jayme Closs cowered in the bathroom with her mother as Jake Patterson shot her father in the head then watched in horror as he did the same to her mother minutes after kicking in the flimsy door.

Dressed in black from head to toe including a face mask, hat and gloves Patterson grabbed the terrified teenager, taped her hands and ankles together, covered her mouth with tape and dragged her out of her home to his waiting car.

According to Jayme her abductor then bundled into the trunk and drove her approximately two hours to the cabin where he would hold her for the next three months.

The horrifying details of the Closs murders and Jayme's abduction have emerged for the first time in the criminal complaint filed today ahead of Patterson's first court appearance in Barron County Circuit Court.

According to Jayme's account Patterson took her into the cabin, removed the tape from her mouth, hands and ankles and told her to go into the bathroom and remove all her clothes.

When friends of relatives visited Patterson 'made it clear that nobody was to know she was there or bad things would happen to her.'

He made her hide under his bed in once corner of his bedroom and stacked totes and laundry bins around the bed with weights stacked against them so she could not move them without his being able to detect if she did.

On one occasion, according to the documents seen by DailyMail.com Jayme stated Patterson got made and 'hit her really hard on the back with the handle of something he used to clean blinds.' She could not remember what had angered him.

Her escape came when he left the cabin and she managed to push the weights away and flee.

Jayme Closs: Suspect confessed to killing her parents and kidnapping her, complaint states - CNN
Jake Patterson confessed to killing James and Denise Closs and kidnapping Jayme Closs, according to a criminal complaint released Monday by the Barron County District Attorney.

The complaint said that Patterson, 21, first spotted Jayme while on the way home from work when he was stopped behind a school bus and watched Jayme get on the bus.

Patterson told police he had no idea who Jayme was, but "the defendant states, when he saw (Jayme) he knew that was the girl he was going to take."

The complaint features the first details from Jayme's perspective of what happened to her. She told investigators that she got up on October 15 to learn why her dog was barking and saw Patterson driving up their driveway. The suspect then shot and killed her father at the door as she and her mother hid in the bathroom, she told investigators.
The suspect forced her mother to put tape over Jayme's mouth and then fatally shot her, and then taped Jayme's hands and ankles together and he dragged her out to the trunk of his car, the complaint states.

On the night he finally followed through he stole his father's 12 gauge Mossberg shotgun - chosen because it was so common as to be hard to trace. He took six 12 gauge shells chosen because 'he felt the 12 gauge would inflict the most damage on someone and would most likely be the best choice of shell and weapon to kill someone.'

As well as the balaclava and he wore two pairs of gloves. He shut off his headlights and coasted to the end of the driveway. As he approached under cover of darkness Patterson saw Jayme's father, James, standing in the large picture window.

Documents reveal horrific new details in Jayme Closs kidnapping
Patterson went to the Closs home in an attempt to abduct the teen twice before successfully doing so, according to charging documents. Those first two kidnapping attempts were unsuccessful as too many people were around.

On Patterson's third attempt, investigators say he blew the door to the Closs home open with a shotgun. Jayme told investigators she had been asleep in her room when her dog started barking and she and her mother, Denise, saw a masked man dressed in black and armed with a gun approaching the door. Jayme and her mom hid in the bath tub, while the teen's father, James, went to see who was at the door, according to the criminal complaint. They heard a gunshot and knew James had been killed.

Investigators said early on in the search for Jayme that they had received a 911 call from an unknown person at around 1 a.m. That call was placed by Denise Closs, according to the complaint, before Patterson broke down the door, ordered Denise to drop her cell phone and put tape over her daughter's mouth. Patterson then shot her in front of her daughter, according to charging documents.

Judge sets $5 million cash bail for kidnapping, homicide suspect

A Wisconsin man suspected of abducting 13-year-old Jayme Closs washed out of the U.S. Marine Corps after little more than a month.

Jake Thomas Patterson wrote in his high school yearbook that he planned to join the Marines after graduation. But military records show he lasted for only about five weeks before being prematurely discharged in October 2015 at the rank of private.

Marine spokeswoman Yvonne Carlock said by email that Patterson's early discharge indicated "the character of his service was incongruent with Marine Corps' expectations and standards."

Charges: Suspect said he knew Jayme Closs was 'the girl he was going to take'
OCT. 15 MURDERS, ABDUCTION

On the night of her abduction, Jayme said she was asleep in her bedroom when her dog started barking. She got up to investigate and noticed someone driving up to the house.

Jayme immediately went to her parents’ room and woke them up. Her father, James, went to the front door to see what was going on. After seeing a man with at the door with a gun, she and her mom, Denise, hid in the bathroom in the bathtub and Denise used her cell phone to call 911.

Jayme said she heard a gunshot and knew her father had been killed.

Patterson broke down the bathroom door after 10-15 tries and told Denise to hang up the phone. He took out some black duct tape and told Denise to put it over her daughter’s mouth. When he saw she was struggling, he wrapped the tape around Jayme’s mouth and head himself, and then taped her hands and ankles together.

Then, with Jayme standing bound next to him, Patterson told investigators he picked up the shotgun and shot Denise in the head.

After shooting Denise, Patterson dragged Jayme to his car and put her in his trunk. He then started driving down Highway 8 towards Barron.

Patterson estimated he had only been driving for about 20 seconds when he passed three squad cars with their lights on heading towards the Closs home. Jayme told investigators she also heard the squad cars drive past.

Man charged with kidnapping Jayme Closs and murdering her parents sits emotionless in court | Daily Mail Online
Jake Patterson's father wept openly, as the charges against his son were read out in court today and bail set at $5 million.

Patterson was not present but appeared via videolink. He sat impassive, dressed in orange prison jumpsuit as the charges were read. His father's shoulders rocked with tears at the sight of him.

Asked if he had been appraised of the charges Patterson answered a strong, 'Yes sir.'

As the first charge was read - that of intentional homicide - Patterson's father, Patrick, let out an anguished wail.

In contrast his youngest son sat impervious. He looked down, following the wording of the complaint as the judge read aloud.

Charging documents reveal suspect's tactics, horrific new details in Jayme Closs kidnapping
Additional charges could come from Douglas County, where Jayme was held captive for 88 days, for crimes committed there, according to Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf.

Patterson appeared in court via video-link. Prosecutors requested and the judge set Patterson's bail at $5 million cash. He also ordered Patterson not to possess firearms and not to contact Jayme or any of the people who helped Jayme upon her escape.

The complaint details how carefully Patterson allegedly planned the crime. Patterson used his father's 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun because it is commonly used and he thought it would be more difficult to trace, according to the complaint. It says he chose the gauge to do the most damage, and wiped shells and shotguns free of fingerprints and wore gloves to load the gun. The complaint also says Patterson shaved his face and head and showered prior to the attack. He was dressed all in black. It says he took the license plates off his car, put stolen plates on and disconnected the dome and trunk lights.

Kidnapping suspect targeted girl after seeing her get on bus
He dragged Jayme outside, nearly slipping in blood pooled on the floor. He threw her in the trunk and drove off, pausing to yield to three squad cars speeding toward the house with flashing lights.

Patterson took her to a cabin that he said was his, ordered her into a bedroom and told her to take off her clothes and get dressed in his sister’s pajamas. He then threw her clothes into a fireplace in the cabin’s basement.

Whenever he had friends over, he made clear that no one could know she was there or “bad things could happen to her,” so she had to hide under the bed. He sealed her under the bed with tote boxes and weights so she could not crawl out, according to the complaint. She had to stay under the bed whenever he left the house, sometimes going for hours without food, water or bathroom breaks.

Patterson told investigators that he kept Jayme under the bed when his father often visited him on Saturdays, turning up the radio in his room to cover any noise she might make.

He said he assumed he had gotten away with the slayings and kidnappings after two weeks went by. He told detectives that on the night he kidnapped her he put stolen license plates on his car and removed an anti-kidnapping release cord from his trunk. He also shaved his head so he would not leave any hair behind and chose his father’s Mossberg shotgun because he thought it was a common model that would be hard to trace.

Jayme Closs' Accused Abductor Held on $5 Million Bail for Her Kidnapping and Murder of Her Parents
The judge ordered a DNA sample be taken from Patterson and ordered him held on $5 million bail.

Prosecutors alleged in court Patterson stole license plates off of another car, affixing them to his vehicle so he could avoid detection from the police. He also allegedly bought a mask to wear the night of the murders, and kept the shell casings, removing them from the crime scene.

The state also argued Patterson shaved his face and all of the hair off his head, and, under questioning, told police he would have killed anyone inside the Closs home the night of the abduction, including children, because he allegedly said he could not leave any witnesses.

Two male members of Patterson’s family were in attendance at the arraignment.

As the older man, who appeared to be the suspect’s father and was heard sobbing, was walking out, a reporter asked: “Mr. Patterson, did you know this was happening in your house?” The older man simply shook his head no.

The other man, who appeared to be the suspect’s brother, was also crying during the arraignment.
