An FBI expert testifying in the trial of a Colorado woman accused of kidnapping her newborn nephew in Wisconsin and abandoning him in freezing temperatures says visits to fake pregnancy belly websites were found on computers seized from the woman's home...

The Wisconsin State Journal reports FBI forensic computer examiner Kelly Kolecheck testified that other websites visited by Smith's computer offered advice on how to get a birth certificate for a newborn and how to breastfeed an adopted baby.

City of Beloit Officer Shannon Dykstra reached Smith by phone as she traveled through Iowa and she said that she didn’t know who took Kayden. At Dykstra’s instruction, Smith made contact with a police officer in West Branch, Iowa. Smith had Officer Alex Koch speak with Dykstra, who told Koch what was happening and why he needed to check Smith’s vehicle for a child or children’s clothing or belongings.

Koch testified that Smith told him she was pregnant, but she in fact was not. Later, as Koch checked Smith’s identification, he learned there was an active warrant for her from Texas and she was arrested.

In a recorded phone call from the Cedar County Jail in Tipton, Iowa, Smith’s husband asked why she had been stopped by police. “Just because,” was her response, not mentioning her missing nephew.

The federal trial of a Colorado woman accused of kidnapping her half-sister's newborn in Wisconsin and abandoning him in Iowa has been halted briefly after the defendant began sobbing uncontrollably on the witness stand...

Under cross-examination, she had trouble answering even simple questions. She said she didn't know where she was born, whether she had any previous convictions, or whether she lived in Wisconsin in 2010.

Frustrated prosecutors held a private meeting with the judge and defense attorney, while Smith sat with her sweater covering her eyes. Before questioning resumed she asked for a break, then began wailing as jurors were led from the courtroom.

Closing statements were made today by defense and prosecution, and the jury took about three hours in deliberation before rendering the verdict.
