If this hasn't been stated yet, I believe that the unemployment benefits and Covid relief money would have given them more than enough to travel. You can camp cheaply at some of those camp sites. At least cheaper than staying in hotels during peak season.

This whole story is sadly suspicious, I pray she turns up soon.
DeSantis can reject extra federal unemployment money, judge rules
hmm were they on unemployment ? I’m not finding any information about prior job history but FL unemployment was notoriously difficult to apply for early in the pandemic - who knows what their situation was though? If they were on unemployment that federal extra amount expired ……

I have to admit I'm not surprised BL got a lawyer. Obviously he knew he would be questioned upon his return with out Gabby. Many of us have said that we would NOT speak to LE without one. But he has one now and yet he still won't speak to them. That I have to say is worrisome. If anything did happen while they were on the road, there is sooooo much area to cover. Way beyond a needle in a haystack. JMO

I am pretty confused. Do we know he’s not talking to/cooperating with LE, or just that he has legal representation?

Although it was not in the best interest of his gf, he probably wanted to wait till he got home before he said anything as he knew the accusations would be attacking him left and right and wanted to be home for his own safety before the SHTF.
He also could have been hoping that she just went home.

Yes, agree. Devil's advocate: Say they had an argument and she went her own way against his advice. He tries to stop her but she's made up her mind. He figures it's her place to tell her parents because he knows they will be angry at her for going off on her own. Her mom said they were okay with the trip - knowing she was with him. When he gets home her parents call him up asking where is Gabby. He says she went her own way back in Utah. They get angry with him and he hires an attorney.

Parents Of Missing Long Island Woman Gabby Petito Issue Tearful Plea For 22-Year-Old's Safe Return Home

"Her mother said she left New York in early July for the trip which was set to end in Oregon next month. She was traveling in a white van which police say has been recovered in Florida, where the couples lives. The police department there said they know where the boyfriend is and they are in contact with him."

All I’ve seen is that he’s lawyered up, and isn’t speaking publicly. Unless law enforcement comes out and says that he’s not cooperating, then we won’t know for sure.

Obviously though, one can be “cooperative” without telling the truth.

True, but FL was quick to reopen as we rely heavily on tourism and hospitality. There were jobs aplenty, still are, but a lot of businesses were thankfully saved.

I don't think Gabby or boyfriend had conventional jobs to begin with, or no online record I could find, so not sure DeSantis rejecting extra fed money would effect them.

I can't imagine if there was a drug related incident out in Utah that he managed to drive all the way back to Florida leaving behind someone he loves and wants to marry. I'm guessing here but that's around a 65 hour drive right? To go home without them.
bbm
Maybe the plans to marry had changed ?

I'm curious about the ownership of the van, because if Gabby left him, wouldn't he have to make his own way back home ?
Imo.

Very telling that Gabby’s mom says she "didn't know where the relationship was going"

Only two directions an engagement can go, marriage or calling it off.

In some of the final calls gabby must have given the impression they might need to call it off. Doesn’t bode well if the road trip was turning that ugly in the final days.

As a criminal defense investigator, I can say that his wisest move was to refuse to answer any questions and lawyer up. Just to clarify, exercising your right to remain silent doesn't make you uncooperative technically. That is just a way police try to pressure you to entice an emotional response from you to try to get you to talk even after you've invoked your right to remain silent. In the court of public opinion, this guy is guilty of something. I hope for her safe return but given the totality of the circumstances one would be hard pressed to believe that she is going to be found safe and sound at this point.

Personally I would NEVER talk to the police without an attorney in the first place, but my general rule is I don't answer any questions from the police under any circumstances regardless of their intention or purpose.
I totally agree!

Looking more at their social media, I wonder if they took some drugs while out in the wilderness and she wandered off? He may have passed out and awoke, not knowing her location. He freaks out and drives home, not wanting to be an accessory to her disappearance if they consumed drugs together. Taking psychedelics in nature is quite common.

I know this is a stretch, but their social media seemed to be very happy. Then again, no one is "keepin' it real" on social media accounts where you're trying to be cute & get sponsorships.

Her own dad described her as a "very very very freespirit." It leads me to believe drugs may have been involved.

A renegade version of Burning Man was held in northern Nevada right after she disappeared, August 29 to September 6. It's not a far drive from Utah - maybe 6 to 8 hours. It was 100% free this year, so would appeal to "vanlife" folks. There were 20,000 people out in the Black Rock Desert partying. I’ve been to Burning Man and it’s very easy to lose your (inebriated) friends out there.
This. ITA. JMO

Remembering the case around Bullhead City Az. with the two married people, and he says she "walked away" barefoot carrying an open can of beer to the van, and he never saw her again. Weird story too, and I don't think it was ever solved. They lived in that border city of Az, but were in the California desert not too far away. And yes, people did point to another missing woman nearby around the same time. Lots of people theorized she hitchhiked in the sweltering heat, barefoot & holding a beer can??
No, sadly still unsolved.

As far as Gabby Petito, could she have left with some other people, and he decided the only course of action was to return home ?
Did she take all of her possessions out of the van, though ?
Again --was it her vehicle or his ?
I'm assuming as the van was seized that LE are inventorying everything ?

Her family would have a rough idea of what belonged to her and in the IG and YT videos, it showed most of the interior so LE would be looking to see if it was all left intact or if she took her belongings with her.
MOO.

I am trying really, really hard to picture this scenario. Let’s say they agreed to separate in Teton, and he left her behind and drove off, never to speak again. Why would she stop communicating with her family? She didn’t have a fight with them.. just him (maybe).

Imo
This guy could t believe.this.beautiful.girl was.his.and was.going to marry him!
I don't know how he might react.if.she.broke up with him!

Now that her story is taking off and her picture really starts to circulate anyone that recognizes her, passed them on a trail, in a parking lot, etc. will hopefully report that info to LE. I wouldn’t care if it was the beginning of their journey, I would want it all for my timeline & how they/he/her appeared.

It can also be a challenge when someone goes missing while traveling & LE determines which departments need to be involved and who is home base. IMO

It seems they were trying to use this trip to get a YouTube channel, website and Instagram accounts off the ground, get some sponsors, etc. and they may have realized there was a lot of behind the scenes work involved in entertaining people on YouTube with 10 minute videos. It's harder than it looks. I also get a sense the money ran out faster than they had anticipated. Did I read correctly earlier that Gabby had purchased the van? Judging on that one scene in the YouTube video Brian appeared* to have some basic car repair knowledge but we don't know that for sure without the full context. I mean there could have been some kind of outrageously expensive repair along the way that sapped a bunch of their funds as well.

Exactly. She should have maintained contact, or turned up. He’d have no reason for a lawyer, and not telling law enforcement and/or the family that’s what happened.
