Gabby Petito missing: Protest erupts at Brian Laundrie's home; fiancé goes missing himself

“The family is claiming they have not seen him since Tuesday,” Taylor said. “Our information that we had was that he was in that home throughout this week. Whether that turns out to be true, we’ll see.

Taylor clarified that the police department was not actively “tailing” Laundrie even though he's a person of interest in his finance's disappearance.

“We're not tailing this person, you know he’s not wanted in a crime,” Taylor said. “And it's still a missing person case, so you know, we weren't following him around town.

She said the two friends would share locations on their iPhones to keep each other safe “in case we got lost,” but Laundrie made Petito stop sharing once he found out.

“He had this composure as a sweet, nice, caring guy. But you could tell he’s a little off, a little weird. Like, he’d set up our hammocks when we’d go to the beach, but wouldn’t sit with us, which I found bizarre,” she told the Daily Mail.

“Brian has a jealousy issue,” Rose said. “I’m her only friend in Florida to my knowledge and that’s not because she can’t make friends, he just didn’t want her to have friends.”

“He was always worried she was going to leave him,” she said. “It was a constant thing to try to get us to stop hanging out.”

She said that the couple never fought in front of her, however she believed that she could tell when they had just had an argument. She said that within the first year of knowing her, Petito spent between seven and 10 nights at her house after they had fought.

“I do believe that their relationship as they kept going on was getting more problematic. It just seemed like there was more and more arguments,” she told the Daily Mail, adding that they had still planned on getting married despite Petito telling her mother it was called off.

Gabby Petito missing: Protest erupts at Brian Laundrie's home; fiancé goes missing himself

Law enforcement officials have received hundreds of tips since her disappearance went viral but most have been false leads.

The North Port Police Department released a statement late Friday night expressing frustrations with the case.

“We understand the community’s frustration, we are frustrated too," the agency's statement said. “For six days, the North Port Police Department and the FBI have been pleading with the family to contact investigators regarding Brian’s fiancé Gabby Petito. Friday is the first time they have spoken with investigators in detail.

It is important to note that while Brian is a person of interest in Gabby’s disappearance, he is not wanted for a crime. We are not currently working a crime investigation. We are now working a multiple missing person investigations.

Questions unanswered in Gabby Petito disappearance
Laundrie uploaded a series of photos from the cross-country trip to his Instagram, occasionally tagging Gabby’s own Instagram.

“It’s a lot easier walking up river holding someone’s hand than walking alone,” he wrote in one post of a canyon ravine.

In between his appreciation of the natural beauty he described, Laundrie occasionally displays a pessimistic view of human activity.

“Zion is proof that mankind can ruin anything even in an effort to preserve it,” his account displays on a photo of Zion National Park in Utah. “Beautiful park just with an unfortunate infestation of human beings.”

“Humans are primates, great apes in fact but I don’t know how great we are as a species,” reads another post from Moab, Utah.

Questions unanswered in Gabby Petito disappearance

Gabby’s mother, Nichole Schmidt, said they don’t believe the last text message they received from Gabby was actually from her. In it, it states that the couple is in Yosemite and that text messages would be tough because of the area.

It was received on Aug. 30.

You do the math,” Nichole Schmidt said Friday. “We know that she didn’t send it because he was home Sept. 1. They never went to Yosemite; they never had plans to go to Yosemite — so it’s obvious.”

North Port Police Public Information Officer Josh Taylor wondered about that as well during a short news conference Friday afternoon, noting driving from Yosemite to North Port in a day on one tank of gas was clearly unlikely.

Questions unanswered in Gabby Petito disappearance

While technology tracking and social media can help find a missing person, it depends on the circumstance.

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Capt. Joe Giasone said agencies can only use GPS and cellphone tracking if the devices are on.

“The cellphone companies are really good if we call with an emergency,” Giasone said.

However, if a missing person used a cellphone at some point, police are able to back track the areas where the phone connected to cell towers.

“You can get access to that pretty quickly,” Giasone said about working with phone companies on an active missing person case.

But it does get trickier in areas like national parks where towers are more scarce, he said.

Other technology like traffic cameras can be used in a missing persons case. Toll booth cameras capture all tags going through, however, red light traffic cameras only record when someone runs a red light.

Social media has also become a major tool in trying to piece together moments before someone goes missing.

The police though took aim at Laundrie's family for being uncooperative with officials.

"We understand the community's frustration, we are frustrated too," police stated. "For six days, the North Port Police Department and the FBI have been pleading with the family to contact investigators regarding Brian's fiancée Gabby Petito. Police released a description of Laundrie in their statement — he is 5'8" tall, 160 pounds with brown eyes, short brown hair, trimmed facial hair and was last seen wearing a hiking bag with a waist strap.

"The North Port Police Department is actively looking for Gabby, Brian, and any information surrounding this case. Please continue to utilize 1-800-CALL-FBI," the department advised.

Police in Florida met for hours with the Laundrie family at their home Friday night.

Officers left the home just before 9 p.m., and did not bring anyone with them, nor did they speak to reporters or address the raucous crowd waiting outside. The North Port police chief soon after tweeted:

"The conversation at the Laundrie home is complete. Once we have the details, a statement will be made. We ask for calm!"

Earlier in the evening, police were seen quickly looking through a vehicle in the driveway. Officers were also seen grabbing what appeared to be evidence bags at one point.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Friday confirming Petito’s case isn’t connected to the deaths of Crystal Turner and Kylen Schulte.

As the search continues, North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison said Thursday that no criminality was suspected in the case “at this time.”

Attorney Says Fiancé Brian Laundrie Missing as Search for Gabby Petito Continues – NBC Chicago
The police conversation on Friday marked the first time that any member of the Laundrie family who has been in contact with Brian has agreed to talk with officers involved in the investigation into Petito's disappearance. Garrison said he believes they have at least some information that could help in the investigation.

"Gabby lived in that house too, in North Port. So if Brian returned without Gabby, you would think people would be asking: 'Where is Gabby at?' There had to be some type of conversation or dialogue with the parents and other family member," Garrison speculated. "I'm a reasonable person, but I would believe that, yes, they do know something."

Taylor said detectives spoke with Chris and Roberta Laundrie in-person with their lawyer present over the phone.

"I wouldn't say that it was, you know, a full conversation. Right now their focus was on us helping them find their son," Taylor said.

Taylor said investigators were still working to piece together Brian's trip from western states to their home in Florida.

"Certainly that truck did not drive from, you know, potentially, you know, the mountain west to here on one tank of gas so we know there were stops along the way. If people saw anything as far as those movements, we're piecing that together, some parts of the time line we've solidified. We know her mother talked to her, saw her on facetime on the 25th of August," Taylor said.
