Petito's last text to her mother read: “No service in Yosemite.” It is unclear whether the couple ever made it to the California park. Petito's last post on Instagram is dated Aug. 25, with no location specified.

Dozens of North Port police officers, FBI agents and members of other law enforcement agencies searched the 24,000-acre (9,712-hectare) Carlton Reserve in the Sarasota, Florida area.

“His family says they believe he entered the area earlier this week," North Port Police tweeted Saturday.

Gabby Petito: search continues for missing Brian Laundrie (heraldtribune.com)
[...]

North Port Police spokesman Josh Taylor told the Herald-Tribune on Friday night the agency was not actively “tailing” Laundrie.

[...]

Authorities say Laundrie is invoking his 5th Amendment right to not speak. The U.S Constitution protects anyone who hasn't been indicted of a crime from being forced to speak with authorities.

As long as this remains a missing person case, Laundrie may never have to speak about the events that took place.

A spokesperson for the department appeared on CNN later Friday night and said the department does have more details but they cannot be released just yet.

"I think that will come out here, very shortly, we just want to get our, our ducks in a row a little bit," the spokesperson said. "This has been a very quickly developing situation here in just the last hour really for the most part. So we're working through that. We want to make sure that we are accurate in everything that we're saying."

Just to make it abundantly clear, police don’t have either Gabby’s or Brian’s phone. They also don’t have access to real time tracking. Police can get records, but it takes some time.

The reserve, which is about 13 miles north of North Port, is a public park owned by Sarasota County that is home to a diverse array of wildlife including feral hogs, alligators and panthers. On Saturday, the reserve’s website warned that most of the park’s 80 miles of hiking trails were flooded. There has also been “some unusual fire caused by lightning,” said Russell Johnson, a longtime volunteer with the park.

“All in all, this is the worst time of the year for visiting the Carlton,” he said.

Mr. Taylor told reporters that more than 50 police officers were searching for Mr. Laundrie on foot, on all-terrain vehicles and with the help of dogs. He described the conditions as wet and muddy and said the park had been closed to the public while the police searched. Mr. Taylor said Mr. Laundrie’s life could be in danger, but he did not specify how.

he said. “There is an enormous amount of pressure on him to provide answers on what’s going on here.”
