I learned in freshman chemistry lab that you can distinguish the presence of some chemicals by putting them in a flame! (Copper - for example, burns green). Gas chromatography is NOT the only way. There is also NMR (nucleaic magnetic resonance) and probably a few hundred others since I graduated from college a "few" years ago!
