FYI - Hurricane Helene recovery efforts have been threatened by armed militia in North Carolina

This article was posted today about hurricane officials in NC temporarily re-locating away from areas in Rutherford County, North Carolina where local armed militia have been out threatening to attack FEMA workers and officials. Unbelievable.

Hurricane recovery officials in N.C. relocated amid report of ‘armed militia,’ email shows

Safety fears are growing as misinformation collides with a large-scale federal recovery effort.

Around 1 p.m. Saturday, an official with the U.S. Forest Service, which is supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, sent an urgent message to numerous federal agencies warning that “FEMA has advised all federal responders Rutherford County, NC, to stand down and evacuate the county immediately. The message stated that National Guard troops 'had come across x2 trucks of armed militia saying there were out hunting FEMA.’”
Chimney Rock, in Rutherford County, has become one of the centers of tension and conflict after a rumor spread on social media that government officials planned to seize the decimated village and bulldoze bodies under the rubble. Authorities and news outlets debunked the assertion, but people still took to social media imploring militias to go after FEMA.

People have been yelling at federal employees delivering aid or showing up to do repairs, saying, “We don’t want your help here.”

One Forest Service employee, she said, was pulling into a gas station when someone yelled at him to leave, saying “We don’t want the government here.”
“It’s terrible because a lot of these folks who need assistance are refusing it because they believe the stuff people are saying about FEMA and the government,” Duncan said. “And it’s sad because they are probably the ones who need the help the most.”

Excuse me, but what the heck is going on? People believe the insane lies told them, but refuse to believe the LIARS are the dangerous ones. jmo

FEMA addresses rumors on a webpage dedicated to them. Below is a list, but more info is at the website:

Rumor: FEMA is preventing residents and companies from removing debris in hurricane-affected areas.
This is false.

Rumor: FEMA controls or manages transfer stations, dump sites and contracts related to storm debris.
This is false.

Rumor: FEMA will automatically provide $1200 if you have been without power for 24 hours.
This is a misleading statement.

Rumor: FEMA will only provide $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.
This is false.

Rumor: FEMA is blockading people in Florida and preventing evacuations.
This is false.

Rumor: FEMA only provides loans to disaster survivors.
This is false. In most cases, FEMA grants do NOT have to be paid back.

Rumor: Applying multiple times for disaster assistance will speed up the process of being approved.
People need to apply for assistance one time per household. Do not re-submit or create a new application during the disaster assistance process. Submitting more than one application per disaster will cause delays.

Rumor: The FAA is restricting access to the airspace for Helene rescue and recovery operations.
The FAA is not restricting access for recovery operations.

Rumor: FEMA distributes aid based on demographic characteristics.
FEMA provides assistance to survivors regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status.

Rumor: FEMA is in the process of confiscating Helene survivor property. If I apply for disaster assistance and my land is deemed unlivable, my property will be seized.
FEMA cannot seize your property or land. Applying for disaster assistance does not grant FEMA or the federal government authority or ownership of your property or land.

Rumor: FEMA is no longer accepting applications for housing assistance.
FEMA is still accepting assistance applications throughout areas affected by Helene

Rumor: FEMA does not have enough money to provide disaster assistance for Helene.
FEMA has enough money right now for immediate response and recovery needs.

Rumor: FEMA is asking for cash donations and turning away volunteers.
This is false: FEMA does not ask for or generally accept any cash donations or volunteers for disaster response. We do encourage people who want to help to volunteer with or donate cash to reputable voluntary or charitable organizations. After a disaster, cash is often the best way to help as it provides the greatest flexibility for these reputable organizations working on the ground to purchase exactly what is needed.
If you encounter someone claiming to represent FEMA and asking for donations, be careful as that is likely a scam. Government employees will never solicit money.

Two weeks after Hurricane Helene tore through the southeastern United States, killing hundreds of people across multiple states and knocking out electricity for millions, volunteers are bringing solar power to hard-hit areas in North Carolina.

"National Guard troops had come across two trucks of 'armed militia saying they were out hunting FEMA.'"

Update, bbm:

In a statement to CBS News, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office said they received a call Saturday afternoon that said a man with an assault rifle had made a comment about possibly harming FEMA employees working on recovery efforts in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area. Deputies alerted the Lake Lure Police Department and other agencies of the threat.

The man suspected of making the threat was identified as William Parsons, 44, of Bostic, North Carolina. He was arrested and charged with going armed to the terror of the public.

The sheriff's office said Parsons was armed with a handgun and a rifle when he was arrested. He was released on a $10,000 bond.

"The initial report stated there was a truck load of militia that was involved," the sheriff's office said. "However, after further investigation, it was determined Parsons acted alone and there were no truck loads of militia going to Lake Lure."

STRESSED COWS. These cows are stuck in flooding - many of them pregnant according to the viewer. They say the water has receded but the cows are very stressed (understandable). Hope they can get them to higher ground soon. (via Lisa Russo) #HurricaneMilton

SOLAR FARM TORNADO. Check out the damage a tornado did to a Duke Energy Solar Farm in Lake Placid. Incredible. #HurricaneMilton

One armed man is more than enough! But, relieved to know there weren't actually entire groups. Glad to know the reality of the situation and the truth is reported.

The owner of Trooper, who was found tied to a pole during Hurricane Milton, will be charged with aggravated animal cruelty charges, according to State Attorney Susan Lopez.

While speaking at a news conference at the Falkenburg Road Jail Assembly Room, Lopez and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said crimes committed before and after Hurricane Milton will not be tolerated.

Giovanny Aldama Garcia will be charged with aggravated animal cruelty, which is a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. According to the State Attorney’s Office, Garcia told police he abandoned his dog “Jumbo” while on his way to Georgia because he “couldn’t find anyone to pick the dog up.”

"State Attorney Suzy Lopez announced
that the dog's former owner has been identified as Giovanny Garcia.

Garcia admitted to leaving his dog which he named Jumbo on I-75
as he was evacuating to Georgia because he couldn't find anyone to pick up the pup.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Orlando Morales
got a tip about the animal and found him in a grassy area on the side of I-75 near Bruce B Downs Boulevard near Tampa.

'In Hillsborough County,
we take animal cruelty very seriously.

This defendant is charged with a felony
and could face up to five years in prison for his actions',
Lopez said.

Governor Ron DeSantis praised the Trooper for his rescue efforts and applauded the state attorney for holding the dog's abuser accountable.

'We had somebody decide as Hurricane Milton approached that it would somehow be a good thing to take his dog and chain it to a post on the interstate',
DeSantis said.

'We said you would be held accountable
and you will be held accountable'."

Good!
