4 infants found dead when landlord cleaned out rental home - Sept 2025 - Ford City PA

I

I truly hope they were all hers, else this situation becomes even more horrific.
I think all the babies are hers so unless there is evidence otherwise, I'm sticking to that.

Some new info.

Jessica Mauthe spent nearly her whole life living in a rented home on Oak Avenue in Cadogan, where her father also previously lived.

Though she mostly kept to herself, neighbors said nothing seemed abnormal about the goings-on at the white two-story home — until Sept. 13.

[…]
Flanigan said he bought the property a little more than three years ago.

He didn’t interact much with Mauthe, other than to spur her to pay the rent, he said.

She hadn’t paid rent in nearly a year and in August, Flanigan evicted Mauthe from the house.

I wonder if her father died about the time her life seemed to spiral??

If she is working 50 hours a week, what is she spending her money on? Drugs? Super expensive jail calls every day and night? Gambling?

She lost her mom in 2021 and dad in 2023. They may have been her support system. No siblings listed in obits.

Okay, now light is being shed. I agree - the parents likely helped hold her life together, and the loss of them (plus dealing with grief) sounds like it might have completely overwhelmed her.

Unless she's always been overwhelmed and the parents handled the other kids and household and she couldn't do it when they were gone.

50 hours a week is still likely not very much income for 2 kids and a house on one income

Can someone help me - do we have definitive timelines for the infants?

Sister's obit
Her sister died suddenly in 2020. Could any of the babies have been hers? Having a sister and both parents die in a short window is alot. I am in no way condoning this horrific situation, but, at this point, it hasn't been proven that she is the mother of all 4.

I found her mugshot and also a Facebook page that looks like her with the same age. It looks like she has two children and might be married and working. If she is still married and/or still working, you would think that someone would know that she was pregnant. I mean, it was three times. Very, very sad. Log into Facebook

JMO.
There was a very similar case years ago where a married woman had hidden and disposed of her pregnancies and newborns. Her Husband allegedly never knew she was pregnant. Her name was Megan Huntsman and she had 5 or 6 pregnancies.

Jessica is not mentioned in the obit. Wonder if there was bad blood?

I see what you mean. CV was listed in one obit as JM’s deceased mother. Deceased sister KV was apparently JM’s half-sister. KV’s mother is living. Perhaps there had been a falling-out in the families. Marital complexities have a way of doing that.

Oh wow. She suffered the loss of her parents plus a sister in a short span of time.

Or.... Is she some sort of familicide killer and had a hand in more than just the babies?!? I hope not. But the first baby died before 2020, when the sister died. So a baby was the first. It didn't start after the deaths of her sister, mom and dad.

Well, her mom died in a hospital after an ordeal with kidney disease. Her father died in an extended care/rehab unit so probably not responsible for them. Her sister died at her home from health complications- reading between the lines of her (on line) obit & condolences I believe her sister had an extended illness so probably not responsible for her death either.

Still a lot of illness & death in a short time. Taking the lives of 4 infants over a few years, while letting 2 live is horrific. I can’t even imagine what she did or why. So many options she had that didn’t include giving birth alone in her bathroom 4 (or more?) times then, smothering those innocents.

I'm curious about your info on the first baby's death date. Did I miss that in one of the sources (easy for me to do - I'm following so many threads right now), or were you just counting back?

Assuming all were hers, I think it's likely that they were all single births (even harder to hide being pregnant with multiples, and give birth to multiples alone without complications to herself, unless they were born prematurely). I do wonder if they were all full-term, and whether there were any medical conditions apparent at birth that might have made her think they weren't likely to live long, or live well.

Though I am leaning in the same direction as some other sleuths, in wondering about this woman's ability to function on her own, and whether the loss of her parents meant loss of oversight as well as the usual awful grief and emotional loss. Perhaps a mental or developmental disability of her own played a role here.

The obit also mentions a brother…

‘Karen is survived by her father, Richard Valasek of Cadogan, her mother, Carol Valasek of Distant, a brother, Richard Valasek, Jr of Oak Ridge,’

Yes. It was reported the first one died 6 years ago. I am linking the post.

During a police interview, Mauthe said she had given birth to the first child six years ago in her bathroom. She told police she passed out on top of the child soon after she gave birth and woke up to find it lifeless, according to the complaint.

Mauthe gave birth to two more children, at different times, in her bathroom, the complaint said. The first made no noise, and she removed it from the toilet and confirmed it was deceased, according to the complaint.

About a year ago, she gave birth to a second child in the toilet, wrapping it in towels and holding it against her until it stopped breathing, the complaint said.

The complaint made no mention of the fourth infant’s cause of death.

probably no point in changing the title yet to reflect 4 infants. I have a feeling they may find even more. :(

It would be interesting to know the gender of all these dead angels. IIRC her living children are boys.
