Why Tori will always matter

http://www.lfpress.com/news/london/raffertytrial/2012/05/15/19762406.html

Here is an INCREDIBLE article written by Randy Richmond of the London Free Press. Very well written and captures what many Canadians feel for Tori!!!!!!!!!! Well done Randy.

Yes, it is a wonderful article, isn't it? Randy's article is on the front page of LFP's print edition this morning.

A few nights ago, almost in tears, my wife said to me:

"So this is it? Once the trial is over we're all supposed to just forget about Tori? When it's all over, she's really gone and no one remembers her again?"

The first answer I gave to my wife is one I believe to be true.

"I think people will remember her."

The second thing I said is something I know to be true.

"I'm going to miss her."

That is, I know, a strange thing for someone who never met Tori Stafford to say.

Today, you'll read how Tori's death ripped apart the lives of those closest to her. The strength of her family astonishes.

I'm exhausted and scarred merely from thinking and writing about her death. But I'll try my best here to explain why Tori will always matter to me, and the thousands and thousands of other Canadians touched by her story.

Thank you once again, Randy, and to your colleagues, for such excellent, heart-felt coverage over the past three years. I know there are Websleuthers here, and readers of the LFP, who feel that they are going to miss Tori too.

I wonder how Tori's family feels today, after the big focus of the trial has suddenly ended, as emotionally exhausting and horrible as it must have been.

I keep thinking this is the first day of the rest of their lives...

I don't think there's any more to the story. I think McClintic's version is pretty close to the truth (the first version). We know who (MTR and TLM), what they did (let's not go into that again), when it happened (April 8, 2009), where (Woodstock, Guelph, Mount Forest), why (MR's disturbed sexual deviancy), and how they abducted her (promise of seeing a puppy)...what else is there?

The only thing I'm mildly curious about is how MTR got to be this way, and what his family life and childhood was like. But only mildly--at this point, who cares? My curiosity stems from idly wondering how this ghoul (I still like that word for him) came to be the way he is.

Agreed. That is the only thing I want to know. How does someone become this sick vile creature and act somewhat normal and go under the radar for so long.

It is too bad that Wills' is being moved, ...I think Rafferty would have enjoyed his company....

Richard Wills disgusts Paul Bernardo and Russell Williams, forcing transfer from Kingston Pen WOW can you imagine this, how do you disgust the scum of the earth.....Im kind of upset that they are moving this Wills guy, but I want to thank him for making life in prison so miserable for RW and PB, I just wish MR was in on this

During his trial, Wills frequently interrupted court proceedings by loudly passing gas and belching, among other things. At one point the trial had to be stopped when he reached into his pants and pulled out feces.

ewww reading that article...this Wills guy is a sicko.....imagine him being bad enough to disgust RW and PB.....I kind of wish he was staying, they could have put bunk beds in his cell and made Rafferty join him.....

I did read an article earlier about Wills, it stated that he was next door neighbours with PB....looks like Smyth was right....he would be in beside PB making googley eyes at each other!!!

I just dont understand why they would move him. Seriously WTF is with this country and the rights of these horrific criminals??? I am sorry let them be annoyed, let them go crazy because that is what they deserve.

I am sorry I totally disagree with them for doing this. Just makes me more angry. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Well last night as I lay in my nice warm comfortable bed my thoughts drifted to Michael Rafferty. I realized this would be his first night in the big boy jail, even if it is for assessment. I smiled to myself, picturing him scared s***less, and perhaps finally realizing, actually realizing that this is his reality for a very, very, long time.

I cant wait until reality hits when he is next to Williams and Bernardo... It makes me smile. I just wish I could be a fly on the wall. :jail::seeya:

However they probably will all get along because they are sick inhuman creatures

As the Globe itself has reported, police fumbled the case by failing to obtain the secondary warrant they needed to search Rafferty’s computer. They had warrants to search his house and car, but to search Rafferty’s hard drive as well, they would have needed a warrant specific to that purpose. The Justice of the Peace and an O.P.P. forensic detective explicitly told investigators this, and there’s no question that they would have received the needed warrant if they had just asked for it. But they didn’t.

Had Justice Heeney ignored this and let the laptop in, he might have introduced an element of vulnerability into Rafferty’s conviction upon appeal. He could have put the crown’s case at risk and opened it up to legal challenge by accepting evidence the defence could have argued was inadmissible. The judge erred on the side of caution, and it’s hard to fault him for that.

Even if the laptop had been legally searched, one has to wonder whether the Crown should have been permitted to use the evidence gleaned from it. Let’s consider the implications of Judge Heeney allowing the jury to hear the Crown’s argument that by Googling search terms like “underage rape,” Michael Rafferty was actively planning his crimes. I might very well Google “murder” when planning a murder–and in the Shafia trial, that was indeed the case–but there are limitless other reasons why I might do so.

Rafferty’s searches were more specific, but proving that they were done in order to plan his crimes, rather than say, out of a deviant erotic interest, is very problematic. The Google searches, just like the child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 police found on his laptop, would have provided jurors with damning evidence about Rafferty’s character, but little proof of his guilt in this specific crime. In other words, they would have succeeded in characterizing Rafferty as an absolute 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬- the kind of guy you don’t mind sending up the river, whether or not you’re absolutely certain that he did it. As Judge Heeney ruled, their value as proof–their “probative value”–was “minimal,” but their capacity to prejudice the jury huge.

This is kinda interesting, although I know Wiki isn't always reliable.

Violence

Over the years "Thrill Haven" has seen its share of violence. J unit is considered one of the most dangerous places in Canada's prison system. The most unruly inmates are often housed there. On average, there are 5 inmate murders per year. (source: Corrections Canada)

On Oct. 12 2010, a correctional officer with a rifle shot a convict who refused orders to stop assaulting another prisoner in an outdoor recreation yard. [10]

On Dec. 7 2010, 120 inmates in the assessment unit refused to return to their cells at the end of a recreation period. They began to barricade themselves in the area and guards fired shotguns and used chemical agents to gain control of the situation. [11]

On Mar. 21 2011, inmate Jordan Trudeau was killed in an altercation. The event took place in the gymnasium area during exercise for "J" Unit (Maximum Security) inmates. Officers deployed chemical agents and fired shots to attempt gain control of the situation. Trudeau was killed by correctional officers via a shot form 9mm rifle to stop him from harming other inmates.[12] Two other inmates involved were wounded. The OPP Prison squad investigated the incident, and found CSC staff acted properly. [13]

UPDATE: Convicted murderer of Toronto teen Stephanie Rengel (David Bagshaw, 21) was charged with attempted murder in regards to this (Jordan Trudeau) incident. He is an inmate at Millhaven (MSU) and was involved in the attack on another inmate that forced guards to fire shots. Bagshaw and another inmate (the attackers) were shot to stop them from assaulting a third inmate

I personally think he lives in an alternate reality where he believes he will be granted an appeal and won't live inside those 4 very tiny little walls for life. Someday....someday, reality WILL sink in.

Yes indeed he did! Good for him, that is what the rest of Canada would like to say as well.

Rob Stafford's statement:

For the last three years, our family has struggled with the loss of Tori.
Until now, it was unclear to us how or why this has happened and we have all had questions.
Countless times we as a family have sat and tried to figure it out, along with people all across the country, all wanting answers.
Knowing now that this was an act or crime that didn’t have to take place just leaves everyone even more disgusted.
Your actions that day ended up up taking our niece, daughter, cousin, friend from us.
Our lives have changed; we have had to be strong for one another even when we weren’t feeling strong throughout this ordeal.
Until now, we didn’t know how long this would go on, but our time is done: your time is just beginning.

Love it!!!! LOL

Blatchford: From Tori Stafford's brother, words of aching humanity; from her killer Michael Rafferty, crocodile tears

http://www.canada.com/news/Blatchfo...Michael+Rafferty+crocodile/6626732/story.html

This is so true. From the above link:

"What he was was all facade all the time, the proverbial inch deep and a mile wide: He worked out; he drank bottled water; he talked about jobs he never had, sons he never had, dreams he never had in order to seem like other people.

To turn upside down the chorus of a wonderful old Pretenders song: There's blood in those veins and he cries when in pain, he's only human on the outside.":puke:

perhaps they wanted to give the staff at that unit a break.:moo: Maybe that have him housed in an area now that is easily hosed down and sound proof. moo
