Military ships in Hawaii taken out to sea, as per SOP for this type of event (from CNN).

Link to USGS article on "surviving a tsunami", based on 1960 pacific tsunami from Chile earthquake.

Similarities between this earthquake/tsunami and the one in 1960.

My 42 year old son lives in Hawaii. I'm frightened for him because he is the type to go for adventure. I hope, hope, hope he's heeding the warnings. I'm trying and trying to call him and keep getting cucuits are busy.

I did get through once and left him a message on cell phone to get on high ground and NoT take chances.

He's a really athletic type who rolller blades down high things and stuff to this day, that is why I'm afraid for him. He's not afraid of anything.

Prayers for everyone involved in this disaster.

They're cautioning people in Hawaii that the first wave isn't the end of it. There can be a number of waves 12-20 minutes apart. The second or subsequent waves or surges can be stronger than the first.

Prayers as they wait.

PS....They evacuated the harbor and all the ships are just off shore. They say it's an incredible site, all those ships just off-shore.

IF this tsunami repeats the one from Chile in 1960, Hilo area will see the most damage.

Positive news is that the increase in communication/news will help to minimize danger, hopefully.

Try not to worry Montana, the military keeps their people safe during these types of events...we were in Guam for Typhoon Paka (97) and were in cement bunkers thanks to the US Govt...he'll be ok !
