THE FAA has suddenly closed the airspace over the 23rd largest city in the US.
No flights in or out until February 20th - citing National security.

This seems unprecedented and must be disruptive and somewhat frightening for the citizens of El Paso.

In connection with the NOTAM closing the airspace over El Paso, the FAA has also prohibited all flight operations in the nearby Santa Teresa area, citing special security reasons. The same validity period and altitude parameters apply.

Important to note, that Fort Bliss is right there also. I used to live there on the military base, and my house was situated right between the El Paso Airport and the airfield on the base. It is a busy area with military flights, and El Paso airport is busy. Not as busy as Dallas or Atlanta, but it's the only large airport in the area. I think Albuquerque or Tucson would be next closest larger airport.

Edited to add: military flights are also grounded.
