Eagle River man missing after authorities say he went on hike near home

An Eagle River man has gone missing after leaving his Hiland Road-area home for a hike Monday evening. Now, police and friends are searching for him.

Michael Soltis, 44, was reported missing, according to the Anchorage Police Department. He was last seen wearing a gray or black hoody, sweatpants and tennis shoes. APD described him as 5 foot 10 and weighing 200 pounds.

According to a Facebook post made by friends notifying the public that Soltis was missing, "His vehicle is at his house and there is evidence that he was planning on making dinner for himself when he returned after a hike."

"Mike is an avid hiker and regularly hikes from his home alone," the Facebook post reads.

According to a post in the Hiking in Alaska Facebook group, people are meeting up to search for Soltis on Wednesday.

Alaska authorities seek bear in mauling

Anchorage police say the male victim had serious injuries to the leg in the Wednesday incident near Eagle River, an Anchorage suburb. The victim, whose identity was not released, was hospitalized. The brown bear was not immediately found.

The attack occurred during a search for 44-year-old Michael Soltis, who was last seen near Eagle River on Monday afternoon and presumed to be going on a hike.

Missing hiker fatally mauled by brown bear: APD

An Eagle River man who went missing after he allegedly went out for a hike Monday evening has been fatally mauled by a bear, according to officials.

APD Spokesperson MJ Thim said 44-year-old Michael Soltis' body was found shortly after a search party member was attacked by a brown bear nearby.
