Sgt. Charles Berry keeps tracking leads on remains from '97

Sgt. Charles Berry had hoped to identify Jane Doe's body, her bones stored in a cardboard box in the evidence room next to his office, before he retired.

It's been 10 years since a hunter found the teenager's body in Indian Creek, and Berry, a crime scene specialist with the Madison County Sheriff's Office, hasn't given up yet.

"You think someone would miss a teenager," said Berry, who's eligible to retire next year. "I find myself looking every time I see a missing child poster. I don't know if it has become a habit or a mission."

An entire shelf of Berry's office is dedicated to Jane Doe, with 4-inch binders full of dead-end leads and, maybe, just maybe, a possible match for Jane Doe.

The sheriff's office has compared the girl's DNA and dental records to more than 40 missing girls from as far away as Hawaii and Canada.

A raccoon hunter found her bones, wrapped in plastic sheeting, off Indian Creek Road near Alabama 53 and Jeff Road in October 1997.

She wasn't wearing clothes.

Forensic scientists believe she's a young white girl, between 15 and 17 years old. She was about 4-feet-10 to 5-feet-1. Weight and eye and hair color are unknown.

Investigators found about 95 percent of her skeleton beside the creek. She had probably been there for a year to a year and a half, said Berry.

Hey, everyone! It's been 10 years (on 10/16) since the Huntsville Doe was discovered. I called the media to get her story out there again, and she was on WAAY tv and on the front page of the paper. I was so grateful for that. I also have two sites about the Huntsville Doe that I wanted to put out here for people to see:

www.alabamacoldcases.com

and

www.myspace.com/somebodyknowswhoiam

Please feel free to add me on myspace and contact me about this case. I would love to hear everyone's opinions and ideas on it!

Hi, everyone! I'm from Huntsville, AL, and I have been studying this case for years now. There is another thread on this case under "cold cases", but I'm not sure how to link the two, and I wanted to put a thread under "the unidentified". Anyway, it was recently the 10 year anniversary of the Huntsville Doe being discovered. Here is her Doe Network site:

http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/148ufal.html

AND here are two sites that I have created for her:

www.alabamacoldcases.com

www.myspace.com/somebodyknowswhoiam

If anyone has any ideas or just wants to talk about this case please contact me...I am always looking for more info.

Have you checked out this girl?

Andrea Gail Parsons

The age is young but everything else seems to fit, and look at the teeth, they look like a close match.

have come up with no matches so far. They even checked someone in Canada! I have always wondered about April Pennington as a match, because everything matches up, but in one pic, she looks so much different than the 2 others shown for her. In 2 of the pics, she looks very similar to the Huntsville Doe composite. She went missing in May of 96, which would have been within the 1 1/2 year time period. She was short, 5'2, small build, and was 15 years old at the time she disappeared from Connecticut. The chip on the Huntsville Doe's tooth came after the detectives retreived the body from what Sgt. Berry said. The clencher is the gap between the teeth. The Huntsville Doe does have a gap between her front teeth. April, in that one pic, does not. But, like I said, those pics of her all look so different. Is it possible that that one pic might not be her? Don't know.

I've been looking for years as well. I've talked with Sgt. Berry several times and they have done DNA comparisons (or dental records, I guess maybe) with so many young girls, one even as far away as Canada. I am still looking because her identity is out there somewhere. Check out my 2 sites for her if you get a chance. :D

PS...what about April Pennington for the Huntsville Doe?
http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/1539dfct.html

In one of the pics she looks NOTHING like her, but in the others, maybe. And everything else pretty much fits. That one pic looks so different from the others, it's wierd.

THANKS!

MrsG-did you ever hear back from LE in this case? I know you stated that the doe network said it wasn't a match, but if the lead had already been explored why was LE trying to compare DNA? Maybe I'm just confused...

I saw a couple of responses about the Huntsville Doe's chipped front tooth and just wanted to add that I have previously spoken w/Sgt. Berry who has been handling this case (I'm from Huntsville) and he said that the tooth was chipped some time during or after the bones were recovered. Just wanted to let everyone know because that does make a big difference when looking for a possible match. The Huntsville Doe does, though, have a gap between her front teeth.

I saw a list of rule outs for this doe, and Daley has been ruled out by dentals.

edit: Pennington is also a rule out by dentals.

that they have checked out. I didn't know about April, tho, thanks for telling me about she's been ruled out. The more they do check out, the more they narrow it down. Something tells me, though, that the HD may not have been reported as missing and that is why we cannot find a match.

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to give you some links to some sites that I made on the Huntsville, Alabama Jane Doe discovered October 16, 1997. I was born in raised in Huntsville and have followed this case for a long time. They have ruled out many girls as not being the Huntsville Doe. I wanted to give people the links to my sites about this case, in case they might be interested.

First of all, here is her Doenetwork page:
http://doenetwork.org/cases/148ufal.html

Here is my geocities page I made for Alabama cold cases:
www.alabamacoldcases.com

Here is the Myspace page I created for the Huntsville Doe:
www.myspace.com/somebodyknowswhoiam

and finally, here is a link to the group I just created yesterday:
