Morgan Co. neighbors remember 8-year-old killed in Thursday morning stabbing

A little boy is dead after a stabbing near Hartselle, and his mother is the suspect in the early morning attack where another person was wounded.

41-year-old Jennifer Long is now charged with capital murder for the stabbing death of her 8-year-old son and is being held in the Morgan Co. jail without bond. New court records give a better idea of the scene on Thursday morning.

According to court records, deputies responded to a stabbing call at about 5:30 Thursday morning. They found the boy's grandfather with multiple stab wounds at a home on Village Dr. He immediately told them that his daughter Jennifer stabbed him, that his grandson was still in his home on Colony Ln, and that he was scared his daughter would hurt his grandson. The Priceville Elementary 3rd grader was found dead at the house on Colony Ln, and his grandfather was in critical condition.

The child was confirmed to be a student in the Morgan County school system. Administrators and student resource offers were notified. Superintendent Tracie Turrentine released a statement:

"It is with great sadness that we have lost one of our students in Morgan County. The student will be remembered for the joy he brought to his friends, classmates, and teachers.
My condolences and thoughts go out to the family at this time.
The loss of a student can be a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students. During this time, as the school community processes this news and copes with grief, please know that support services are available to those who need them."

Priceville Elementary Principal Daniel Gullion also released a statement, saying:

Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the tragic loss of a 3rd grade student. The incident happened early this morning before school began and took place off campus. The Crisis Team will be here at school Friday, March 17th, and Monday, March 20th to support our entire 3rd grade classes, the students who ride bus #41, and any other students in need of assistance. We are all hurting and heartbroken from this incident. Please be mindful and respectful to the family regarding any social media posts. We appreciate your prayers for the family, the students and Priceville Elementary School faculty and staff.

Alabama mom faces capital murder case after 8-year-old son found with knife in chest at crack of dawn

Alabama children are mourning the loss of a classmate and friend after an 8-year-old boy was stabbed to death in his own home early Thursday morning.

Investigators said that defendant Long was arrested at the scene of the homicide. The defendant allegedly told responding officers her son was dead in a bedroom upstairs. Authorities said they then found the boy, since identified as Tyler Weston Gardiner, stabbed to death in bed, according an affidavit obtained by Law&Crime.

The victim was found dead in “the master bedroom” and had “multiple stab wounds,” authorities said; the knife was still “protruding from” the boy’s chest.

Long is now charged with capital murder of a person under the age of 14. The statute 13A-5-40(a)(15) says that intentional murder of a child under the age of 14 constitutes a potential death penalty crime.

Awful, awful. How can the death of an 8 y/old be told/explained to his classmates is school?

WTH was his mother thinking to have apparently done something like that?
And why did she attack the grandfather?
