Police officials confirmed the Toyota Sequoia was recovered and the man depicted in surveillance photos released by police was taken into custody.

The search for a 3-year-old girl abducted from a birthday part in Birmingham Saturday night saw a major break exactly 24 hours after her disappearance when a suspect vehicle was found and a person of interest taken into custody.

Birmingham police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies about 8 p.m. Sunday descended upon Woodside Condominiums on Shadowood Circle off Roebuck Parkway across from the Cathedral of the Cross. Police officials confirmed the Toyota Sequoia was recovered and the man depicted in surveillance photos released by police was taken into custody.

The vehicle was discovered when condominium resident Ricardo McGhee got off work and noticed the SUV parked outside the building. He conferred with a neighbor about whether he also though it looked like the suspect vehicle released by police. Both agreed it was, and their neighbor was the man depicted in the photos released by police. "We both called 911,'' McGhee said. “It wasn’t just me.”

McGhee said they stood watch over the vehicle and police were quickly on the scene. "They drew down on us,'' he said.

Officers took the male suspect and his girlfriend, a black female, into custody. McGhee said the man has only lived there a short time. "I don’t know him personally,'' McGhee said. “But it’s bugging me because i have a child that was just born on Labor Day and he obviously was looking for a child.”

The vehicle was discovered when condominium resident RMgot off work and noticed the SUV parked outside the building. He conferred with a neighbor about whether he also though it looked like the suspect vehicle released by police. Both agreed it was, and their neighbor was the man depicted in the photos released by police. "We both called 911,'' RM said. “It wasn’t just me.”

Father of Kamille McKinney pleads for someone to bring his little girl home

• Kamille’s father says he’s watched and helped police search the area.
• “They went to all of the empty apartments, we checked every cut, trashcan, ditch, dumpster, bush, car, anything around here that was abandoned and anything you could look under, we checked it,” says McKinney.
• “I’m out here in the rain, I ain’t had no sleep. She’s coming home,” he said.
• He’s begging, pleading, for someone to bring her back to her family.
• “Drop her off anywhere. Just let her out. Somebody will see her. Everybody knows what’s going on. Just take her to the store and let her out somebody is going to see her. They know what’s going on and that will be the end of this. We just want the baby back,” says McKinney.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency at 11:45 p.m. issued an emergency Amber Alert. Police on Sunday night released photos of a possible suspect that were taken by surveillance cameras at a nearby convenience store. Also Sunday night, ALEA issued a second Amber Alert with updated suspect information.

Smith said they are conduction extensive interviews with those detained and said at this time, they have not uncovered any connection between the suspects and Kamille’s family members. "The most important thing we do with any investigation is to remain open, keep our minds open and follow every lead,'' Smith said. “We have to focus on the evidence and where it leads us.”

The police chief said he does believe others are involved in the abduction, but declined to elaborate. He said they have done an exhaustive searching for video evidence linking the suspects to the crime. "We’re putting the pieces of the puzzle together but it takes time to follow the leads, the trails,'' he said.

The facts about child abduction cases in the US
As officers continued to search for Kamille “Cupcake” McKinney nearly two days after she went missing, Chief Patrick Smith of the Birmingham Police Department spoke about how much the disappearance of the 3-year-old girl had had an impact beyond the neighborhood she had grown up in.

While the exact details of McKinney’s abduction have yet to be revealed, there are studies that point to common trends when it comes to child abduction cases. One aspect is that child abduction cases where strangers kidnap children are very rare. According to a piece in Reuters, fewer than 350 people under the age of 21 have been abducted by strangers per year in the U.S. since 2010.

This is compared to the active list of 424,066 children considered missing in the country as of 2018.

“From 2010 through 2017, the most recent data available, the number has ranged from a low of 303 in 2016 to a high of 384 in 2011 with no clear directional trend,” Reuters stated.

What also makes McKinney’s abduction an oddity is her age. Although girls are the typical victims of abduction than boys, children between the ages of 12 and 17 make up nearly 80 percent of abduction cases.

One of the most notable findings is that with a few exceptions, most missing children, whether they be runaways or those who are abducted, the majority of those who are kidnapped are often found alive. The common data points to only 1 in every 10,000 missing children not being found alive, according to organizations like Poynter and Parents.com.

Within hours of McKinney disappearing, an Amber Alert was issued across Alabama, notifying the public to be on the lookout for her. Since being implemented nationwide in 1996, a total of 957 children have been successfully located.
