WSET-TV ABC13

"HOMEWOOD - AL - Rev. Richard Shahan is, once again, being interviewed by Homewood Police, Friday, after spending his second night in the city's jail."

*

Lt. Atkinson says Friday evening will mark the 48 hour window that police can legally hold a person of interest for "investigative purposes."

*

"Shahan has not been arrested or charged for his wife's death."

***

FWIW: I haven't seen anything to indicate that he is no longer a person of interest.

HOMEWOOD, Ala. (AP) - "An Alabama minister is on paid leave following the slaying of his wife.

The First Baptist Church of Birmingham posted a message on its Facebook page Saturday saying Rev. Richard Shahan is taking time off to heal."

*

"No one has been charged, and police say no one has been ruled out as a suspect."

i.b.nora, thanks for the updates here, very much appreciated.

It seems to me that there would be legal restrictions to prevent Richard Shahan from leaving the county (or state?) since his wife's murder case has not been solved... And he was held in jail while questioned... And no one has been ruled out...

:waitasec:

He has not been charged with any crime. LE has a right to hold anyone for a limited number of hours to question them without arresting them. He was not in jail but was detained at the jail for questioning. They may do this to prevent the person from having any outside contact. RS was free to call an attorney at any time prior to and after he started being questioned and apparently did not do so but continued to cooperate with police. It appears he went willingly, was never cuffed, just detained. While RS was not under arrest he still could have asked for an attorney. It appears he cooperated and remained until they were finished with their questions. So there would be no legal restrictions because he has not been named as a suspect or a person of interest.

LE must be satisfied for the moment with his answers because he has not been called back in to be questioned. If RS has an attorney they may have asked if there was any further need of him for questions because he wants to leave the country. Obviously LE knows about it or we wouldn't be reading about his plans because apparently someone spilled the beans. jmo

Here is a Google map that people who have been following this case might find interesting. Especially those who live in the area. I don't live there, have never been there, and really know nothing about the area. Even with the little mileage thingies on the Google maps, its hard for me to get a real handle on how close or far something is.

In any case, I have not thoroughly studied the listings on this map, but I don't see much of anything yet that sounds similar or that indicates a pattern of any kind regarding the murder of Karen Shahan in her own home, on her own couch, late one night.

Perhaps others will see something I don't see.

I'll throw this in. From what I know about Birmingham, south and southeast of town, is the growing suburban, upper middle class area which would be safer. Its my guess that most of those murders occured within the inner city or close to it.

  • #669
Most of those murders were of men also.

From the news link posted by T4Tide: http://www.abc3340.com/story/24218516/minister-questioned-in-wifes-death-plans-move-to-germany

"He says his plan is to work with Bible Mission International in Frankfurt, Germany. He says he will be developing Bible curriculum for Russian speaking children, preparing programs, and leading training workshops for teachers and parents. In the letter, he asks for prayer as well as financial support to fund his work overseas."

I would think that RS could do all that from the comfort of his own home. Isn't there already Bible curriculum for Russian speaking children? I guess he wants to develop his own. As far as the training workshops for teachers and parents, he could use WebX for web conferencing. I had a job where I worked from my home, and so did all the employees in my dept. and we used WebX for our training.

I have to say he made a good choice in choosing Germany. My husband and I were stationed near Augsburg many years ago and we loved it.

Oh, I had nothing to do with the making of the map nor do I have any special access to it. I just happened upon it one day last week.

The names on the side are in order, January, February, etc. One can scroll through that list until you get to late July and click on the little icon to the left of her name. It will cause a pointer thing to appear on the map. Same is true with all the names. It is a pretty cool map.

This article with a 'touch' more info:

http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2014/01/homewood_pastor_whose_wife_was.html

"NASHVILLE, Tennessee - A Homewood pastor whose wife was found slain in July was arrested on New Year's Day as he tried to board a plane for Germany, records show.

According to online jail records, the Rev. Richard Shahan, 53, is being held without bond at the Davidson County (Tenn.) Sheriff's Department. He was booked into the jail at 10:53 p.m. Jan. 1 for being a "fugitive from justice.""

*

"According to an affidavit filed in Davidson County, Richard Shahan was arrested Jan. 1 because a "customs lookout" had been issued for him in case he tried to leave the state or the country.

The document states that Shahan had booked a flight from Nashville to Frankfurt, Germany. Department of Homeland Security Agents apprehended him after he was "red-flagged" in the computer system at Nashville International Airport.

Shahan was taken to the Criminal Justice Center in Davidson County, and Jefferson County confirmed extradition. He is scheduled to appear Jan. 7 before a judge in Tennessee, court records show."

Gosh what a surprise, a man of the clergy and all, who would've thought that they guy they took into custody as a person of interest on a 48-hour jail hold and questioned extensively regarding the murder of his wife, Karen Shahan, might actually be, pending fair trial by a jury of his peers, the culprit in this case, this man of the cloth, this country-absconder, Reverend Richard Shahan, the only named person of interest in the matter??

Hmmm, I wonder if they told him not to leave the state/country when they questioned him in August.
