Many church members have questions, and it's alright to ask questions, Carter said.

"Who did this terrible murder?" he said. "Why did they do this? Why the unexpected developments in the aftermath of this? Why the notoriety that has developed as a consequence of this? These are logical questions."

bbm, I wonder what this means.
Interesting choice of phrases by Carter ...:waitasec:

I just hope there is a lot going on behind the scenes and as stated above it does NOT end up being a cold case!

I hope I am wrong but I have a bad feeling about this murder. I am afraid Karen's murder will end up in the Cold Case Forum. Like I posted before, I hope this does not end up as a Matt/Kari Baker situation. Who am I to question a man of God? So, who killed her? Are there any suspects? Does she have an advocate looking for answers?

The first trial I watched was the Jodi Arias trial. "Justice for Travis" all over the place. Comments/fundraisers/help the homeless endeavors, out the wazoo on social media. Might be that Baptists are more reserved than Mormons, IDK, but I have not seen any news/social media crying out "Justice for Karen". Maybe the Travis Alexander friends were over the top with all the interviews his best friends did?

Eerily quiet...IMO.

BBM: 'Man of God' has nothing to do with ordination or what a man does for a living. It is a heart condition- and a hallmark of a 'man of God' ( a real one) is constant self-examination. In other words- there is nothing evil, bad, wrong or inappropriate in questioning ANYONE in seeking justice for the murdered.

I don't know about the case or church gaining notoriety due to the murder but, imo, find it offensive that the victim is mostly identified as "wife of pastor" and how there is even concern about how it affects a church. How about retail manager, grandmother who was active in church work brutally murdered in home instead of news articles being"wife of pastor" as her description.

Yes... You put into words the underlying message the pastor was seemingly giving...

I find it very interesting that we have heared no response from Karen's husband..

I only recall a report by an observer that he was "catatonic" at the funeral ...

No outcry of sadness... Pleas for finding the killer... Etc....

Also, from the above link: People should not assume you're not a good Christian if you ask questions, he said.

"Asking questions is not a lack of faith," Carter said.

I find it strange that Carter informed the congregation that questions were all right. Do some people really question a person's faith for asking questions?

Its wrong but some do. It's not hard to find a church whose leaders are not afraid of questions, but when you find one run by men who make their own rules , get out fast!

I was invited to leave Beltwaypark in Texas for asking the elders for spiritual guidance. Apparently it is disrespectful to my husband ,(according to them). I know better and I did leave...husband didn't. Now my whole family goes without me and the elders are cool with that. Sad and wrong, but true !

BBM: You just hit the proverbial nail on the proverbial head! And squarely at that.

Here in Indiana, singer John Mellencamp's two (adult) sons are under arrest along with a third man for brutally beating another man. The headline has a picture of the singer. He's not charged with anything, he has nothing to do with the case except being related to 2/3 of the accused. BUT I sure don't hear anything about how this affects his image or his career.

SMH...

I'm hoping this deafening silence is indicative of this LE having a lot of evidence and are quickly working toward having all their ducks in a row for an arrest of WHOEVER it is that is responsible for this woman's life being brutally taken from her and her loved ones..

Sadly I know all too well(from years here at WS) that the deafening silence is all too often NOT a positive sign, but rather negative.. I pray that is NOT the case here for Karen Shahan, her loved ones, and community.

....and it's great that it's "okay to ask questions" (as if it has not been okay before?).
Anyway, I think that most of the people intimately involved should be asking themselves a lot of questions.
Here's hoping there's plenty of DNA evidence and local surveillance filmage for LE to link whoever committed this heinous act against KS. And I don't care what their lot in life is.

Just curious.......was their a large life insurance policy involved?

That is just terrible TGIR. I Googled Beltway park (I am in TX so got curious.) Not sure I hit on the same one. Baptist? Mrs. Shahan was Baptist. I know there are all different types of Baptists but I have learned since moving here (from So Calif.) that a lot of them are very patriarchal. Might be Mrs. Shahan's church was and might explain her being referred to a "the pastor's wife". (discussed up thread) I best shut up before I violate TOS or offend somebody, which is not my intention. :moo:

Well... I guess he is saying it is okay to ASK questions...

but I have a feeling it is not okay for the congregation to ANSWER questions... (To media, concerned outsiders, etc....)

I didn't like some church spokesman wording that the media quoted, but try to remind myself that he's an elderly leader and probably traumatized just like was said. My biggest issue was with the media labeling the victim in the beginning mostly as preacher's wife. It makes a good story for media though, especially after he was held a couple of days.

I'd just like to clarify. I am a southern Baptist. Was raised in a SB church,as was my DH and our kids. We are not fundamentalists that act cultish, or walk around subservient to our husbands. We are normal, everyday people. We wear fashionable clothing and hairstyles, and make-up. I dance if I want. Although in my case, not very well. I might be listening to to gospel music one day and Bon Jovi the next. The last concert I went to was BBKing. (Scratch that off the bucket list). My favorite ratty t-shirt has Tootsies orchid Lounge on it. If I see you in the liquor store, I will speak to you.We are just like everyone else, except we are Believers. Okay, felt good to get that out! :)

We attend Church of the Highlands now, but I was raised southern Baptist, as well, and I know exactly what you are taking about. I don't drink, but I make a mean rum cake and might see you at the liquor store! Haha

Oh My!

I am so sorry if my posts made anyone feel I was being judgemental regarding FBC... Or ANY church for that matter!

That was not my intention AT ALL!

I have just felt this particular church has been close lipped... And probably for a very good reason...

I know in my church... I discovered at a meeting yesterday... Through anecdotal discussions.. That in the Methodist church there are stark differences in the protocol for what the pastor can and cannot wear...

some must wear more traditional clothing... Whereas some pastors in other campuses are allowed to dress in a more "relaxed" fashion...

Just an observation of mine that churches differ within and from others...

I hope all is good...

:please:

LOL, yesterday I wore faded Levi's with a very dressy white peasant blouse and lots of silver Brighton jewelry. I did trade my flip flops for dressy sandals since it was Sunday!

I have seen pastors my age who are at contemporary churches go all out to look cool in the latest trendy styles, while my pastor wears a traditional suit and tie. To me, there is no right or wrong.

Myself, I tend to go more dressy casual. Its more comfortable than dresses, pantyhose, etc but I still feel dressed nice.
